Tory Leadership Race 09:57 - May 31 with 57707 viewsDorse

Not a party political thing or a reason for an LFW punch-up, but I keep having the eerie feeling that eventually every single Tory MP will put themselves forward leaving Teresa May with the casting vote. At which point, she cackles maniacally and slowly points at Jacob Rees Mogg sitting at the back, with the entire parliamentary party turning to stare at him... He is seen to gulp and mutter 'Oh, copulate my happenstance'

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

They have til 10th June to declare . I hope Steve Baker gives it a go .
Irony is for Tories who are in marginal seats Boris is probably the one with the best chance of beating Farage and Corbyn . You dont get elected Tory mayor in Labour London twice without having something that appeals to voters .

He's reinvented himself since then, he can't really present himself as a harmless buffoon who's actually really quite liberal for a Tory anymore.

That said, I do still think he'll win the leadership contest. Whilst I've no doubt he's unpopular in parliament, at the end of the day sitting MPs will vote in their self-interest, and Farage has got the party over a barrel (Richard Seymour wrote a really good piece in the NYT about Farage recently), and a quite a few will conclude that Johnson is their best bet at not losing their seat to the Brexit Party at the next GE.

A lot can change of course, but at this point I just can't see him not being put into the final two, there'd be out-cry and the party would be deserted by what remains of their membership.

I can't think why "Helmet" came to mind when discussing British politicians. Oh hang on, someone mentioned milquetoast.

Prime Minster Raab and Prime Minster Johnson are two phrases which should never be uttered, like QPR Manager Terry.

I was hoping Amber would run but she's biding her time.

Cards on the table, I am a pro-Europe green socialist - stop puking over there - but my oh my, look at the state of our politicians!

Tories - Deary me, that list of leadership candidates is like the reptile house in Whipsnade zoo. Oh, and the party is seemingly irreconcilably split.

Labour - Also divided plus their Corbyn is simply not PM material. Not media friendly, too idealistic to play the popularity game which is what you need to do to get in, not consistent or clear in his policies, not really a leader

LibDems - Without Cable, they have very little credibility or presence

Change UK - Probably too small and ill-defined to make a difference

UKIP - Basically a one issue party but dead in the water without Farage. Lead Zep (note spelling) without Jimmy Page. No credible players ever apart from our Nige.

The Greens: I love them - after all, our economy and the human race in general is reliant on an equable climate - but it will be a long road to credibility as a mainstream party.

Brexit Party - A one issue party, all the chips on Farage.

A really grim picture

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

I have mostly voted Labour in elections though did vote for a Green candidate in a council election as he was a fellow runner and listened to my idea of a running lane around the outside of a park. I struggle to support Corbyn. I am more of 52-48 pro EU guy. I know people who are fanatical about the EU and those who have worked abroad. I like some of the initiatives such as working time directives but despise the way Greece was treated.
Looking at a surge of support for the Lib Dems I despise Cable as he is was involved in the sell off of Royal Mail and more Tory Lite. I will see how either Ed Davey or Jo Swinson fare. I would love to see an alternative to the Labour/ Tory dichotomy but struggling to see the Con Dems as the answer.

Has to be a Leave MP, any half way house will run into the same set of problems May inflicted upon herself.

Raab has already offended the feminist vote, McVey has no gravitas, the back stabber Gove is simply not trusted, which leaves only one person with the personality to carry it off, Boris.

As mentioned, London is virtually a no go zone for Tories, so to get elected Mayor takes some doing. Forget the harmless buffoon act, it's irrelevant, only charisma and personality now stands any chance of threatening to carry out a No Deal scenario, he has it.

It will force a General Election but only Johnson could encourage Farage to back off, at that point it's a straight fight between Tories on a No Deal ticket and the rest splitting each other on a remain ticket.

Aside of all that, Remain parties are shít scared. That's why he gets all the hate thrown at him whilst the rest in the Leadership race get a fairly easy ride.

I’d think it would have to be a dyed in the wool brexiteer, preferably one who has already fallen on their sword over this issue.

Zero sum game isn't it? The more Brexity the winner the less chance they have of getting anything through parliament? The more remainy the candidate the less chance the have of making through the blue rinsers?

About right I think. Which will ultimately be a disaster for the Tories and not much better for Labour being forced on to solidly Remain ground. A soft, negotiated Brexit would have been far and away the best option for the country, but tub-thumpers on both sides have brought us to this point, and the main parties will suffer the consequences. A country polarised around this kind of imagined attitudes-based culture war just doesn't map onto either of the traditionally class-based politics of the Tories or Labour.

Yeah exactly this. Labour's position of a soft brexit and getting on with our lives was probably the best bet for not descending into a culture way our political framework isn't built to cope with, but the remainers in Labour pitched themselves too close with the Hardcore anti Corbyns to influence anything

It would be less galling if the militant FBPE-ers had actually done something useful in the years since the referendum, like actually change some minds, rather than endlessly attack Corbyn for not pressing the magic "make it like it used to be" button. But it's been a strategic disaster-class from start to finish, and unless some lessons and learned fast, they'll fck up a second referendum too, dragging the Labour party down with them.

Meanwhile, I continue to be both amused and horrified by the media's sudden infatuation and rigorous fluffing of Rory-"I'm on the telly and in your kitchen"-Stewart.

Please not Boris. Aside from the fact that he was sacked for lying and squandered tens of millions of pounds worth of public money on a white elephant, it's not fair on him. It will kill him. He doesn't have the focus, determination and resilience to plug away as he tries to deal with the mounting problems the UK faces.

They all deserve a f**king good thrashing with the rough end of a Broomstick.

Doesn't matter what Party they are.............................they are all Vermin, with a capital Ver.

What we need is someone that can pull our Club up from the boot laces.

I could do that........but will they give me the Gig?........will they bollocks.

Do you know what........I'm past caring.....piss on them all, piss on the lot of them.

I'm wasted on here.

Granted, I've been on the Ale, and now I'm on the Brandy, but make me right.

Piss on them all.

What's going on?

We should be told

Sort it out.

I've usually voted tory at elections, but would really struggle to vote for any of that lot. The tories should be screwed long term, but if we have the misfortune of a corbyn government, that will make them look relatively attractive. I think joey Barton said something right for once when he said choosing between the parties was like choosing between three rough birds

Lets all just be honest for once, our country has changed rapidly over the last 25 years labour as a party doesnt know what it stands for anymore. Once maggie gave all of us poor working class people the chance to buy our council houses and stuck the mortgage millstone around our necks thus stopping us from withdrawing our labour to make things better for everyone, and in the process getting rid of the unions as a viable force in politics, we all became selfish gits and started voting tory. We are reaping what we sowed and believe it or not racist as it sounds john cleese had it right . LONDON is turning into a foreign city, my 30 odd year old kids are still living with me and my wife because they both work hard in london but have no chance of buying or renting a shed let alone a house here. Get out if you can but if not try to help your kids to because it aint gonna get any better and its our generations fault. Selfish gits

Johnson's gonna get it. It's the inevitable outcome. Come on, we've been on this path for some time now. Trump, Brexit, Johnson. There's some kind of narrative unfolding that's not exactly written by the establishment, but by a collective pantomime audience of voters.

Politics is breaking new ground. Tory membership is both shrinking and becoming older. The Tories received more money last year through gifts in peoples wills. I hear that the Brexit party are ahead in the polls this is in terms of a general election and this is a party without a manifesto. Clearly they want to leave Europe and advocate PR. Brexit has barely begun the stakes could not be higher. We face the most serious political crisis for generations. I believe the risks are both democratic and economic. We’ve got legitimisation of prejudice and racist behaviour as a result of the rise of the right. Meanwhile the US president is-telling us to sue the EU. Anything is possible.

What Borris needs, and in fact we all need, is a 'letter of understanding' or something of that ilk, from of all people Trump.

Stating that he will give Boris, if he became prime minister, a very good trade deal with a few hints as to what.

It would make Europe think, and would help Boris even more, as the rest think this is their chance at glory, nothing less. Fecking McVey? Big mouth twa t with no real idea. lolololol
