Dental Work- Bridges/Crowns etc **NON QPR 15:45 - Jun 17 with 2201 viewsthame_hoops

Going all Mumsnet as I know you guys/girls are fountains of knowledge!

I cracked a tooth badly and it cant be repaired (just to the side of my front ones) dentist today said the crack goes right up into the gum (after X-Ray) and a crown probably wont be possible as it needs something to secure too.

Options are to

Remove and have a gap -NO

Remove and have a removable denture- NO

Bridge: Remove the tooth and place a bridge but it means ruining the tooth next to it as they grind it down to attach the bridge, very invasive but long lasting.

Implant, £3k and the most long term but again quite invasive and expensive

Final option- A Maryland bridge- the one im leaning towards,remove cracked tooth, then they basically make a tooth same colour and shape and attach it to the teeth either side side (permanently) by a metal or ceramic fitting (you dont see it ) and it is supposed to last 5-10 years, maybe more

has anyone has a Maryland bridge, do they work?

cheers in advance!

Hello Thame, I used to be a dental technician and once made some crowns for John Major. I was also in Minder - I may have mentioned that. Anyway, things may have moved on since my day, but the Maryland is/was the least invasive procedure - the false tooth has "wings" sticking out either side that used to be acid etched into the teeth either side of your soon to be gap. Theoretically, if it falls out, you simply have it re-etched.

You are also correct about the bridge - the teeth abutting the gap are ground down and ruined - the bridge sits on what are now about to become stumps. Not for me. Implants, although expensive, can be fantastic* as long as the dentist's technician (and the dentist) get the shade correct - the shape of the false tooth is down to the technician.

I'd guess the Maryland would be the best option financially. Forget the denture, it will drive you nuts.

Good luck and thank feck I don't do that any more.

* Should have said fangtastic.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

thanks for this.

I think I may go for the Maryland bridge, 10% of the cost, it just seemed like a temporary option but from what I've read it should be quite secure. I havnt whitened my teeth for 6 months so would I need to do that before they order the bridge so it gets matched/shaded properly?
