In the same era as "follow the bear"!!!!
No, it was long before, 'follow the bear'. Double Diamond was one of my first beers back in the mid- sixties. Actually I used to drink Light and Diamond - sophisticated eh? However crap it was, it was better than Watney's Red Barrel!

Remember Stanley Unwin with Flowers Keggybit ? The Chas n Dave Courage Best ad was great too, just a shame the beer was poor. Now Courage Directors was a bloody good beer on handpump in those days. Those of us lucky enough to live in Southwest London of course had Youngs and Fullers. The loss of Youngs was a savage blow.

The same people produced this stuff, which my dad used to drink at home in the dark days of The Decade That Taste Forgot when you couldn't get decent beer from offies:
PS the photo appears to be from an e-bay advert for an empty can of the stuff - WTF

I know its been around for years but I happened to see an offer in Lidls for 4 tins of Holsten Pils the other week. Having swiftly places them in my troll, I drank them that evening and to my surprise I really like it.
Used to be my dads drink in the 80s, he'd order 2 bottles in his local con club and pour them into a pint glass with a dash of lime. He'd drink that with a King Edward cigar.
You dont see many drinking it these days.

I seem to remember diabetics and people that wanted to lose weight drinking Holsten Pils as it was supposed to be low in sugar content. My wife used to call it Bottled Cats Piss.

Holsten Pils is a good beer and always has been properly brewed if you get the German stuff. They ferment all the sugar out so it's good if you are a diabetic. It's brewed according to purity laws (Reinheitsgebot of 1516) which means it's not had any crap added to it.
Not that I am but I know someone who is and he has to be careful with beer as some have a ton of sugars. Not sure if the English brewed version lives up to those ideals.
Anyway that all I know about Holsten Pils!

Fullers pubs are crap...and Youngs pubs were always rank and smell of old uncleaned pipes .... See a Youngs sign for a boozer, just ignore it and move on. Horrible pubs.

Y'know, you've struck a youthful remembrance chord with me.
