Can't remember a youth team player making such a huge initial impression since Clive Allen.

Should have been a contender.

20 years ago Chris Geiler turned up at the Guinness ground one Saturday morning telling everyone 'I've just signed the best player I have ever seen'. And to be fair , he was outstanding in the youth team. But within 6 months he hooked up with my nieces boyfriends gang in Hanwell and was out every night until the early hours drinking and selling/taking drugs. There was another QPR youth player he knocked about with as well who got sacked by the club for stealing team mates belongings from the changing rooms. Both kids were wronguns and were too stupid to realise the opportunity they wasted. It was well documented that Leone couldn't even read or write and his dad was a gangster in Cardiff and was doing 12 years for drugs at the time. He was given about 6 or 7 'last chances' by various clubs so I have no sympathy whatsoever.

Back in the late 90s with some of the original Manc Rs, we went to see the Rangers yoof play City’s yoof one Saturday morning.

After 30 seconds, if that, the Rangers game plan was as sussed as it was obvious: give it to Jeanne!

For the next 90 minutes he absolutely tore City’s entire fledglings a second one. At halftime we were talking to some City fans, who were just gobsmacked by how good he clearly was. All no doubt wondering when the time would come and they could say when they saw him first.

Next time I saw Jeanne, was in the First XI against Bolton. He looked strangely out of sorts in comparison to what I’d seen a short while earlier and the great stories coming north of Watford. And then a bloke I was sat next to informed that basically, the lad was off the rails!

Nature, nurture or both? Either way, a supreme talent stupidly and annoyingly frittered away.

An earlier version of Ravel Morrison?
One from Cardiff, the other from Manchester. Similar upbringing, similar talent, similarly wasted.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime. (Mark Twain) Find me on twitter @derbyhoop

Ravel is back in the Premier League (somehow).
