Pitch size 15:04 - Aug 9 with 929 viewsterryb

I do get fed up with reading on this site how small our pitch is! I read on the Chair thread that Scowen may not be suited as well to the small LR pitch as opposed to the spacious area of Stoke City. (Ok, I have exagerated the wording!). Well guess which palying area is the smallest in our league?

No, it's not enormous, but it is bigger than five other Championship clubs in area & longer than eight other clubs

Not sure where those pitch measurements are from but just checking Stoke's from two sources reveals their's is 105m x 68m (115 yd x 75yd). This from the Football Ground Guide and also Wiki (who has the width at 74yds).

It's not the size that matters it's what you do with it that counts.

Can someone confirm this for me though... back in the late 80s early 90s, when you look at highlights reels of QPR at Loftus Road, did we have really thin goal posts or what?
That FA quarter final v Liverpool and Butch hand stand volleys the opener which rattles in of the upright and crossbar - the goal frame warps and vibrates like it's made out of rubber . You don't see that nonsense these days.

They moved the goal line forward a few years back as literally no one in the away end upper could see it, they did the same at the loft end as well as we had to have certain sized nets that were the same as everyone else’s, Upton Park used to have goals like ours as well.

Stoke's ground was purposefully made smaller for Pullisball.

I expect perception is a big part of it because of how close the stands are to the pitch

They come from footballstadiums. co.uk.

I wouldn't know if they are accurate, but Stoke did have to increase the size of the playing area to play European Cup matches there a few seasons ago.

They then reverted back to normal for league games. This was of course, in the Pullis era with the numerous long throws!

I have to say that I wasn't convinced with so many clubs having the same area! However, our playing area is not much less than a lot of clubs.
