Rugby World Cup Thread 09:31 - Sep 13 with 29993 views | PlanetHonneywood | A week to go and aside of the annoying Tarquin ra-ra factor, looking forward to a tournament where ‘all’ the players won’t be rolling around feigning injury as if they were shot by a blunderbuss when they were hardly touched at all. Kiwis to lose really, nothing revealing about that. But the fact they’re in the same pool as the Boks and neither would meet until the final, then assuming they both avoid defeat, makes it hard to look beyond an AB, Yarpies final. As the rest of us can be inconsistent and would likely have to beat both those behemoths to win it; hard to see anyone lifting the trophy.

Missed most of the Japan game on Sunday and it seems like ages since I actually sat and watched a whole game, which is a bit odd when this is supposed to be a tournament. Anyhow it was always going to be a case of keeping afloat until the Quarter finals and avoiding injuries, so we start all over again on Saturday. Can't see Ireland beating NZ in a proper game that matters. I fancy Australia to beat England if they avoid too many handling errors. Wales will beat France. Japan v South Africa is the game. Could see that going either way but it should be fun to watch.

Rugby World Cup Thread on 00:57 - Oct 15 by timcocking | Yeah, it's getting bloody ridiculous huh? https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/rugby/international/rwc-over-20-per-cent-of-pla Next world cup to be won by the UAE without one homegrown player. Perhaps Man City can start an international Rugby Team and win that as well? It's another one of those issues which we all know is fundamentally wrong and yet nobody seems to care. What a sickener for the players who are pushed out of the squad for foreign signings. [Post edited 15 Oct 2019 1:43]

You know that's a link from 2015 right? Makes me think you haven't read it. And let's go through the numbers there. Samoa and Tonga top because they're poor countries and people move to New Zealand and Aus. Meaning a lot of the squad are "foreign born" going back to play for them, or because they sought out new lives. Japan have five, but one of those is Korean. The bulk of the squad is Japanese born, which is pretty great considering it's a niche sport there and the point of this team is try and galvanise the country into taking the game up Wales have 10 "foreign born" players - 9 of them born in England to Welsh parents. Scotland admittedly have a lot - but they also have 10,000 senior men's players, half of what Ireland and Wales have and less than 7% of the players England have so I don't blame them for their scouting approach to find other players who are Scottish qualified (but only 2 with no connection qualifying on residency). Ireland - feel sorry for Dev, but he was fourth choice at best. And to show how stupid that article is Ireland's number from 2015 includes Jamie Heaslip who was born in Israel as his dad was in the Irish army and stationed there on UN peacekeeping duty, and Jordi Murphy who was born in Spain to Irish parents who were working there at the time. France have no excuse - their rugby set up is a shambles and they are probably the ones closest to what you accuse everyone of. England - Manu, Mako and Billy all moved to the UK when they were children, went to school here and represented England from under 18s onwards. Cockasigna moved here when he was one. Not English enough for you? Forcing some proper English boys outs are they? Other than that it's mostly low numbers of people fitting with a general pattern of the movement of people outside of rugby. Sorry that doesn't quite fit your DEY TOOK OUR JOBS narratives, but I'd suggest you research the things you share beforehand
Rugby World Cup Thread on 09:51 - Oct 15 with 2514 views | robith | New Zealand are probably going to slap us truth told. They played very conservatively in 2018 and I think their pace round the fringes will kill us. We've been pretty dreadful this calendar year and nowhere near the execution levels of 2018. I foresee a pretty casual NZ win. Showtime Nigel is also reffing which will massively favour NZ's style of play
Rugby World Cup Thread on 09:53 - Oct 15 with 2513 views | robith | England will marmalise Australia, and Garces as ref amplifies that. He basically doesn't understand the breakdown and I think with England's significantly better tight 5 they can counter ruck Aus off the pitch like Wales did France are rubbish. Facile Wales win. South Africa Japan is gonna be the one

I hope Ireland and Japan win, and the French beat Wales. That would make life slightly easier for Eng if we manage to defeat the Aussies. And even if we didn't win the WC, I'd be quite happy with Ireland or Japan winning it.

Ok, i take it back, it's marvellous to have 15 foreign born players in their squad, nothing whatsoever wrong with that. Ps The Vunipolas are Welsh [Post edited 18 Oct 2019 1:41]

The handicaps for the weekend are England -8; NZ -12; Wales-7; Japan +15 I reckon England(Evs), Wales(Evs) and NZ(11/10) will outscore those. Japan will be too close for comfort.

I think each of the quarter finals is capable of providing an upset. Not saying they will just that they could which will make for an entertaining weekend.

Good result for Australian rugby. Now they can finally get rid of the worst coach in decades. Perhaps the ARU needs looking at as well.

There seems to be a corporate decision at the ARU that the national side has to live up to the model of the 80s team and keep the ball in hand. The best Aussie team of recent years have been the Brumbies; restricted by a small budget they play crude but effective wet-weather rugby and get most of their tries off rolling mauls. The powers that be in Sydney must fear that won’t get sponsors or eyeballs on the national stage, where the public prefers the superior entertainment (in my mind) of the NRL to kick-and-clap. Today’s Aussie pack would have been perfect for an arm-wrestle if they had had a 10 who could punt them to the other end. This is a bit of a crisis for them if they want to stay in the top tier. I think the NRL definitely eclipses Union. But union hasn't helped itself. When I first got here 15 years ago the Super 14 comp was advertised everywhere and the waratahs would get great crowds. Now the waratahs couldn't fill leichhardt oval. Many people I've spoke to have given up on it and go and watch the shute shield at sydney uni.

Was feeling pretty optimistic about England’s semi-final chances after that performance against Australia. But the All Blacks are just unstoppable against Ireland. They’re like a black tide rolling forward with almost zero errors and England are going to have to play out of their skins to beat them.

As a fellow Irishman I take no pleasure in that scoreline Robith, but I will ease the pain by raising a glass or two to the generosity of the odds compilers

3 errors in 80 minutes I think. The speed the All Blacks recycle and some of those offloads were staggering.
Rugby World Cup Thread on 18:07 - Oct 19 with 1559 views | BlackCrowe | NZ were superb but ireland were incredibly one-dimensional, lacking skill and thought and seemed beaten after 10 mins. We'll be underdogs next Saturday for sure but this England team and it's bench is very very good but it'll need an outstanding error-free performance.
