Anybody on here been?

Thinking of heading out there next summer but trying to do some research first. Not sure how expensive everything is out there so if you have been, I'd love to hear what you think?

Cheers.

I've made several trips to Colorado in recent times. I live in the US Midwest, so perhaps I can't provide the context you are looking for, in terms of cost comparison, but I did find it all very reasonable. Now, if you were looking at a permanent move to the Denver or Boulder area, housing costs seem wildly out of line, you are certainly paying for the view.

My brother lives in Denver. Direct flights to Denver can be bloody expensive, but you can almost half the cost if you fly somewhere else and catch an internal flight

Been there many times. Like much of American it's mind-bendingly dull and inward looking. Boulder looks pretty but that's it. Lots of Atmospheric Science if you're into that.

Denver is meh.

Great scenery.

There are hundreds of place on earth to go to that are more interesting and just as beautiful.

Go to Argentina.

One of my brothers bought a place in the mountains there. Stunningly beautiful area, that's for certain.

Lived there, mostly Colorado Springs, for about a year and a half in the early 70's. Great dramatic country the Rockies, the weather changes equally dramatic, could be -30 and +20 same day. Good people, great night life, top bands back then, and plenty of everything, work included. I'm sure it still looks good but the rest may have changed!

My brother's a cabbie and last week he picked up an American who lived in Colorado. Thre guy showed him a handful of gold nuggets that he said were lying around on the ground everywhere you walked.

I've been to Colorado quite a few times, including riding a bicycle across it so would be glad to provide information. What are you into? Have to disagree with posts that refer to it as dull, but if you come with that mindset and aren't looking to experience the great American West it no doubt can be I suppose.

I like the outdoors and history. One of my favorite places to visit is in Southwest Colorado with the Anasazi ruins of Mesa Verde which is a World Heritage Site. You can go on a hike to Cliff Palace and just spend an afternoon exploring and contemplating the pre-Columbian history of North America. There are big crowds in the summer, but also enough space to get away at times.

I have been surprisingly disappointed with the hiking there, but if you want big peaks, the "Fourteeners" are all over. I stayed away from those, but my wife and I went on a beautiful hike that circled Grand Mesa located on the western slopes of the Rockies. Not heavily visited, plenty of camping, beautiful scenery and even a hospitality bar/restaurant/store.

If you'd rather just drive and shop, rent a car and drive the Million Dollar Highway/Route 550. You'll be hard pressed to find a more scenic drive, so take your time and pull over frequently. The old mining towns are authentic and give a great glimpse back to the Old West. They also have all the tourist shops offering American Kitsch and local artisans, etc. If you like off-road, you can rent an off-road vehicle and drive hundreds of miles of unpaved roads in the mountains.

The tourist town of Aspen is interesting to visit, but expensive. There is good, local hiking, mountain bike riding and a free gondola ride to the next town over. High end restaurants and brew pubs and yes, marijuana is legal, so plenty of dispensaries.

Haven't hung out much in Denver, but did go to a Broncos game and you can always check out a Rockies or Colorado Rapids game during the summer.

Hope you have fun.

Thanks very much for all the responses folks.

Looking at doing a 3 week road trip next summer, hire a car and do a massive loop taking in as many stops as I can make.

The flights are not cheap as it stands but will keep an eye on that. The main thing I wanted to know was how expensive it is whilst out there as in food and drink etc? I would also be keen to find out the cheaper route when it comes to getting out there as mentioned in the replies on here.

Thanks again.

They are still doing that route and the prices are good, issue is they charge you £80 per case per flight which bumps the price right up!

As I say Argentina is just as beautiful, much much cheaper and infinitely more interesting. Food is better too.

Second vote for Mesa Verde. You can get a way from it in Colorado if you want to. Did a three day hike and saw no roads or other people for the entire time apart from a couple planes. Met generous people. Chatted to an old couple when waiting for a table at a steak restaurant after the hike. When we asked for the bill we were told it had been taken care of. Can't tell you anything about the cities, but the rockies are gorgeous, even just to drive around.

Sadly the hotel prices in Colorado seem higher than other areas in the U.S. You can find less expensive places, but you often get what you pay for. Summer time with summer crowds is particularly difficult. I am not so versed in new technologies, but I wonder if apps like Air BnB can help.
Food prices shouldn't be a problem. Good, authentic Mexican food is usually very affordable as are the family run cafes where the locals eat. Going to a grocery store deli for a lunch sandwich and side dish, can be a cost saver. You can pick up fresh fruit, drinks and such and keep in a cheap cooler that you can buy at the store. Most major chain stores in the area have those options.
