Day 15 of actively supporting QPR. So far so good. A six goal thriller at St*mf*rd Br*dg* and two home wins including a 3-1 demolishing of Spurs. D W W. This supporting QPR lark is pretty straightforward and bags of fun. Almost too easy really. Leicester will be straightforward, just hope we manage to avoid Liverpool in the semi-final.
Well we certainly managed that. This was more than an FA Cup Quarter Final home defeat. It was an omen. An early sup from the Milk Cup of human despair. In a way I’m thankful to Joe Waters for revealing the true nature of QPR to me so soon - the utter bastard.
Edit: And thank you too xtc for bringing this up for no apparent reason. You’re a card.
Considering the nuisance we made of ourselves when we visited our East Midlands adversaries, we were slightly surprised to see the numbers they brought down that day. Then, having witnessed ‘the finest football team the world has ever seen’, for the previous four or five months, succumb to these provincials (and Leicester), the name Joe Waters left an impression that has scarred the rest of my adult life. So shocked were we that we went home in an orderly manner.
...one year, after a couple of seasons of frivolity in said fair city, we were finally confronted by large gentlemen who counseled against our entry into local watering holes. Taking their advice seriously, we enquired as to where we could partake of the ‘waters’? While I have forgotten the name of the establishment, I’ve never forgotten the words of the 400Lb man at the door who pointed us in the direction of another pub, assured of entry as they served the Irish in there! My Greek driver and co-pilot thought this was hilarious😀
A real big game back in those days. A real major talking point at school was the FA cup back then. A a really disappointing day and sad feelings lingered in a teenager who thought we were going to walk it. Didn’t we hit the post in the first half. My recollection was that we never really got going and didn’t play well at all.

On a happy note, Joe Waters got sent to Grimsby after this. Serves him right.
Ok bloke though. Crossed paths twice, Irish fella, last time I saw,/ spoke to him he was managing a pro indoor football / soccer team. Lives in Washington State up in the north west corner of the US.
Went and read Waters bio, interesting enough, but the part that caught my eye was the first ever club he played for, Wembley Rovers. Never heard of ‘em, located in Limerick, area that looks like it’s pronounced Rat Turd.
I remember that game for one main reason. I couldn't get in as it was ALL TICKET which was a new one on me!! I used to read the programme voraciously back then. Except the ticketing news page obviously. It's the only Rangers game I've never got into. I was so excited having seen us win 3 cup rounds on the trot, kids , believe me, it used to happen. Then a steward told me I wasn't getting in. And when I saw the result on Grandstand I cried for the second time that day.
I was there - great atmosphere. The FA Cup was the real-deal back then. As someone else mentioned we never got going that day. The 75/76 team was coming together and I thought we could have gone to the final had we won. Anyone remember the amazing previous FA Cup game in round 4 vs Coventry which was a replay? Now that was some atmosphere.

Was that a 3-2 win with a last minute Bowlesy free kick?

The four home cup games had crowds of 28,573 v the SW6 pikeys (I bunked off school), 23,367 v Birmingham, 28,010 v Coventry and 34,078 v Leicester. I wish it had been 34, 079 though.

Over 100k for four games!!
I was at the three home games. Forgot the attendance for the Coventry game was so high. It was an evening match.
I seem to remember Stan licking his finger and holding it up to see which way the wind was blowing before taking that free kick! All ticket games, having to send a letter with cheque (postal order) with a SAE!
Coventry game Up there with the one of the noisiest and pandemonium games at LR, night game as well. Stoke 3-2 home game with Webb scoring the winner around the same period and Oldham game also up there. Newcastle away when Keegan scored wins the away vote. I used to work at Heathrow and would watch Concorde take off all the time standing outside. That was loud. Newcastle was close.
