Super U's to secure the points at the Lamex Stadium 19:39 - Jan 3 with 1578 viewsdurham_exile

Stevenage Away on Saturday at the Lamex Stadium with Graham Westley in charge for the fourth time.

But this is overshadowed by two rumours with one gaining currency all the time. Jevani Brown has apparently signed on loan for Forest Green Rovers and Kurtis Guthrie is due to sign on loan for Bristol Rovers from Stevenage Borough. Guthrie, if the rumour is true, will not be missed against us tomorrow. He usually is the thorn in our side and ever since his acrimonious departure from the then Weston Homes has normally scored against us.

But I am incandescent with rage at the news (broken by Wessex) that Jevani Brown whom we paid £315K for from Cambridge United will be allowed to sign for one of our direct rivals in the League Two promotion race. Whether the loan agreement prevents him from playing against us the damage will have been done because FGR are a direct rival and you can guarantee that he will suddenly appear to play like the starlet that he was supposed to be when we signed him. Mark Cooper must be laughing all the way to League One!!!

Loan players by all means, but not to direct rivals. That must be the golden rule. Rant over.

Brown’s departure is all the stranger when we have a litany of injuries:

Bramall - ankle
Sowunmi — ribs
Senior — groin
Cowan-Hall -achilles
Clampin unknown

Is Junior the new Bonne — will he be loaned out or can he play up front for these vital games or will he languish in the reserves.

There appears to be no suggestion that Colchester are entering the loan market and so to offer one of our so-called stars on loan shows poor judgement at best.

JM must look carefully at his squad to determine the best formation and starting XI at a ground where frankly only three points will be good enough.

Gerken

Jackson Eastman Prosser James

Pell Stevenson

Harriott Gambin Nouble

Robinson

Subs:
Norris Comley Kensdale Ross Fernandes Poku Junior

Stevenage weather will be 7 degrees Celsius and dry with plenty of sunshine. Ideal for January football.

I have decided to travel down the A1(M) the 217 miles for the game and have persuaded my eldest son to accompany me. Colchester are likely to have 500 supporters so the atmosphere should be a good one.

Safe journey to the travelling faithful.

A reminder about the top seven in the table

Swindon 25 49
Exeter 25 47
Crewe 24 44
Bradford 24 43
FGR 25 40
COL U 24 39
Northampton 24 38

Given the imminent transfer of Jevani Brown note the position of FGR!!!!!

Enjoy the game.

Not to mention that Wiredu has been recalled by Charlton!

Safe travels tomorrow Durham. I can no longer make the game due to my pregnant sister-in-law’s gender reveal. Might be able to go to Cambridge away instead as it’s looking unlikely that I’ll get Brighton tickets for West Ham away that day!

Wiredu was actually recalled some time ago, but I expect they couldn't publicly announce it until the end of the official loan period. Just also to add, the Brown news is currently speculation, and features on the FGR messageboard - I can see it happening though. I think I'm right in saying it is an FA rule that loanees can't play against their parent club, if that helps?

Regarding Jevani Brown, I totally agree Durham it would be outrageous if he were to sign for our promotion rivals. I would like a statement from the club - but very unlikely to get one - why our big summer signing has hardly kicked a ball for us, and doesn't even make the squad on many occasions. It has been suggested he doesn't fit into our system. If that is the case why on earth did we sign him. We must have watched him on a number of occasions before we signed him, and knew what he was capable of. A number of Championship teams were interested in Brown last season, so when he decided to sign for us I thought we had pulled off a real coup. How deflated I feel now when we have reached the halfway stage of the season, and he has contributed next to nothing.

It is good news that Guthrie won't be playing tomorrow. I am sure it will give us a psychological advantage, because when he has played against us in the past I think we are intimidated by his presence.

What are we doing?
There's just a chance we might make top seven this time and yet, behind the scenes our Junior-Bonne-Slater-Collins-Hanlan-Lapado-Mandron-currently Comley nonsense continues and now Brown who cost plenty is likely to be given no further chance. It's absurd. I read the other day that Gillingham are climbing up lg 1 solely due to the quality of two players in the list above. What causes us to miss what others don't whereas we sign someone promising like Stevenson who turns into average occasionally bothered might be s?
I've been baffled by this since that winner Bonne scored late in lg1 v Posh then was dropped 6 or so years ago.
If the policy is inconsistent is it any wonder we continually flatter to deceive.
Boy were we poor v Crawley, tomorrow needs to be a really professional, committed rout of the opposition for the supporters to really believe. The new year's day attendance was very low.

GOSBTS the Wiredu loan deal was up on 11 Dec. I thought he was a good loaner but we made no attempt to extend the arrangement.

Anyway more important matters hope your sister in law and baby are both doing well.

Stevenage will be a new ground for me and on paper we should prevail.

Cambridge away will be a good game we owe them for earlier in the season.

Mick of all the flawed things the club has done the signing of and then failing to play Jevani Brown is right up there.

Sheer madness to loan him to another top 7 side.

He was signed as a direct replacement for Szmodics.
He played against Cambridge and was shocking. His penalty against Spurs was shocking but once again the club have not tried to develop him and he has languished as a result.

I agree with you the club should issue a statement but they won't.

A total mess.

I do hope Guthrie has signed for the Gas he is our nemesis in recent years.

I travel with considerable hope and trust that the positive Colchester will turn up and win comfortably.

Pinault the club appears to be reluctant to move forward.
Having achieved the breakthrough into the top seven we now commit the unforgivable sin of delay and negativity.

Although top seven appears to be the aim. The objective must be automatic promotion.

The play offs are a lottery and must be avoided.

Automatic promotion allows the players to take to the beach early and to get transfer business done early.

I know this might be too much to hope for but the quality in league two is poor and this has to be our best chance to cement the promotion that we have struggled to achieve.

Loaning our most expensive signing to a direct rival is not the way ahead.

Three points tomorrow and at the Globe Arena next week will lighten my mood and the team are capable of doing so.

Ah, I hadn't realised Wiredu's loan expired back in December. It's a shame - I felt as a substitute he sometimes drove our midfield forward. I suppose we have Pell back now, which is a blessing.

Does anyone know how much longer Paris Cowan-Hall is out for? If we came back into contention it'd almost be like having a new signing. I hadn't thought much of him until the Spurs game, where he looked like he could be quite a force.

I evidently see things differently.

Despite all the hype of the Summer,, Brown has been hopeless in the first team and just as bad in the under 23s. Those of us that have seen a lot of him are happy to see him off the wage bill so that we can immediately replace him. If he blunts FGRs attack as he did ours then that is a positive. But if he shows form (like Bradford' s Doyle on loan at Swindon), we can recall him. I see it as a win-win as he won't play against us. At least he isn't dropping to National League oblivion and has an opportunity to prove himself at this level without screwing up our attack.

However, it is true that there is a history of players not fulfilling their potential until leaving the U's. The classic being Ian Henderson, who was never a fan's favourite at WHCS then becomes a legend at Rochdale. Another was Freddie Sears. However, we have also seen fan's favourites slump to oblivion, like Dominik Vose and (potentially I fear) Szmodics that I always thought was overrated and a good sale. Bristol City have given Sammie less opportunity than we have with Brown.

We don't see players in training. We don't see player's fitness monitoring. It is patently obvious to me that some (like Guthrie, Vose, Bonne) have attitude problems. Is it a surprise that Guthrie is exiting Stevenage promptly on Westley's fourth appointment? He hasnt fired since October, so alleged interest from Bristol Rovers surprises me. I reckon Bonne and Lapado would not have languished in non-league for so long if it was perceived they had no problems. I recall Bonne boasting on TV that he was premier league class long before he ever proved himself. Whilst a swagger and confidence is good, it must pi55 off some managers if players are "all talk" and fail to deliver. I am glad he is now succeeding, but after scoring four on TV at Wealdstone he didn't set the world on fire at Lincoln City or Woking and had three years in the non-league wilderness before success at Orient. He simply wasn't ready at WHCS, and we can't afford to wait for late developers that clog up our wage bill. Under Financial Fair Play Rules, we need to release (or loan) them and pay better prospects now.

In a nutshell, Norris and Nouble too slow and predictable. By contrast Mackeil-Smith ran his legs off for the home team. Stevenage goalkeeper had a blinder. Pell, Norris and Harriott all squandered decent chances. They might have been bottom, but Stevenage were well organised at the back and no team in the division has drawn more games. Good warm up for another 0-0 at Morecambe.

I still remain very optimistic that we are a different animal than last year. Despite two lacklustre results, we have a deeper squad depth and have a backbone, a fight about us. With the departure of Brown, hopefully the last two results have provided justification for some dealings in the transfer window. I think we'll finish anywhere between 3rd and 6th. I just hope that my next game against Macclesfield won't prove my optimism to be unfounded!

Brown straight in the starting line up for FGR.

Quotes from the Crawley v Forest Green report:-

It was a bright start as well from the Colchester United loanee, with a lot of FGR’s early play going through the number 16, playing in a central position behind Collins.

In the 50th minute, Brown cut onto his left foot from the edge of the box and forced a good save from Glenn Morris, diving away to his left.

Man of the match: Jevani Brown (despite only playing 73 minutes before being subbed)

What a surprise. McGreal out.

McGreal?

Prize in the post Gerry!

The post match interview was as illuminating as ever; having listed all the reasons why it’s so hard to beat 10 men (is it though?) McGreal said they would have to work on stopping crosses into our box and getting on the end of crosses at the other end! It’s only taken 4 years but it seems the players can look forward to working on the basics next week.

Compare that to Wayne Brown’s comments later on, which were basically “if we are creating chances I expect us to take them”. No place for such a dangerous philosophy at Col U.

I see it the same way Noah - Brown has failed to impress on the few occasions I’ve seen him, certainly far worse than the other options he have. If he shapes up with a spell on loan, all good, we can either bring him back or sell him on.

As for yesterday, one of those days unfortunately, with so many chances created and not converted, against a team happy to pack the defence. All the more frustrating that we continually tried to pass it through a packed penalty area all too often. There were enough convertible chances for Norris, Harriott etc., but those that were on target their goalkeeper was equal too. My mate reckoned Stevenage would sneak a winner right at the death, so I guess we have to be grateful that didn’t happen.

Good to see Junior come on, though he looked a bit off the pace in his 10 minute cameo.

I can't let this one go it's eating away at me!

Jevani Panenka Brown was purchased to replace Szmodics.

I have only seen first team appearances including Spurs so can't comment on the U23 but to allow him to go to FGR is just wrong on so many levels.

Forget the £315k for a moment, as if we could, he has not been given the opportunity.

I have been busy today so match write up can wait until Monday.

However why do we get it so wrong so often with these players.

Anyway Morecambe awaits on Saturday.
