Sheff Weds 10-15 year season ticket thingy 13:35 - Jan 16 with 1385 viewsbosh67

Sheffield Wednesday launch season ticket guaranteed for 10 years after Premier League promotion.

The '10-year season ticket', described by the Championship club as "completely innovative", will cost up to £6,400.

Confusingly, the ticket will be valid for a minimum of 15 years.

I can't work out if this is bonkers or not.

Never knowingly right.

sounds like a short term money raising scheme to me.

for instance, what happens if they over spend / ffp ?

they can pay it but then what? the next 15 years with nothing coming in. then relegation, big eages, dwindling crowds, limited income, more relegation, dwindling crowds, less money, limited income.

Maybe the current owners arent planning on sticking around?

Exactly what I think. Something very dodgy going on there IMO.

Short term bid to beat ffp by getting all their eggs in now?

Bradford did exactly the same thing a few years ago and I can remember a guy phoning 5 Live and opening his heart after he’d been suckered in and the club then dramatically slid down the divisions! … He said something like “at the time everyone laughed at me for doing it except the wife who went into a total meltdown”. He went on to say he hated going to matches but felt like he had to to justify the huge dent in his bank account.

They can only take the relevant percentage of that as income each year though.

"completely innovative"

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Cashflow desperation, nothing more, nothing less.

Far from innovative, if I was a fan hearing that news I'd be very fearful for the club's future.

They can borrow money against this future income as some clubs do with staggered transfer fees.

So innovative Leeds United did it years ago. When Ken Bates along, he tried to change the terms and conditions stating it only counted IF they played at Elland Road. So he looked to building a new stadium.

Yes agree - cash doesn't always equal profit/income as far as a P & L is concerned

I think Palace did similar about 25 years ago which paid for the building of the Holmesdale End stand I think

At it's cheapest it's still £455 per season.

What's the inducement?

But what if the club are not promoted in 10 years?

"This makes no difference," Wednesday said. "There is no maximum to the numbers of years outside the Premier League. For example, if we achieve promotion in 15 years, those first 15 years are free and then the 10 years start to count down."

So basically it's in your interests for them not to go up. Which is odd.

I had a look at Owls Talk yesterday to see what Wednesday fans made of it.

The vast majority of them think its absolutely bonkers and another sign of desperation from the club to raise cash.

I did appreciate this comment though (re-typed from memory...)

"The year is 2038, Sheffield Wednesday are in another Championship play-off final. AFC Wimbledon scramble a last minute winner over the line to go up. 75,000 fans erupt at Wembley as Wednesday fans celebrate another year's free season ticket"
