George Petchey RIP 12:51 - Jan 17 with 1396 viewsBrianMcCarthy

Saw this on QPR1st's FB Page

Famous name from our not-so distant past.

"We join in mourning the passing of former QPR wing-half George Petchey, aged 88.
Born in Whitechapel on June 24th 1931, George moved from West Ham to Rangers in July 1953. He played 278 league and cup games for us and scored 24 goals over seven years, which included Alec Stock’s first season at QPR.

George transferred to Crystal Palace in June 1960. After retirement from playing he managed Leyton Orient and Millwall. RIP"

"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."
Poll: Player of the Year (so far)

I remember him well. He was not averse to using illegal methods to check an opponent. Today of course he would not stand out for this as they all do it.

Not quite old enough to have seen him play but my old dad reckoned he was a decent pro. Another who was'nt known for being particularly gentlemanly if the need arose. R.I.P.

One of the fan groups were chasing information on him the other day, I wonder if that’s how the club found out?

Yes. Bloke I sit next to in SAR is involved with Forever R's and had been trying to contact his family recently. Someone replied to his tweet explaining George passed just before Christmas. He then passed the sad news to the club and on the QPRretro Facebook page.

Your Dad was right, he was a good pro and decent player, albeit the R's hard man if things got a bit rough. I think the term in the nodern game that would fit George is 'ballwinner'.
Thanks George for some happy memeories!

He was hard but no mean footballer. He was possessed of a hard shot and a neat body swerve. I think that's all of the Petchey - Rutter - Angell half back line gone. RIP George.

Great to read tributes from some who saw him play: not many of our players stay nowadays for 7 years and make over 270 appearances. RIP George.

Sad news George Petchey was a good professional a regular 7 out of 10 player, in the days when footballer's played for the love of the game and their club.
Before money became the all important ingredient to the so called club loyalty of today.
Condolences to your family.
RIP George
