I’ve just watched the documentary called Team of the Eighties. I’ve had it on my planner for a while, but just got around to watching it. I remember all the publicity at the time about it. Malcolm Allinson started it, and he brought Terry Venables in as coach, before Venables took over as manager.
Their rivalry with Brighton started in about 1977 when they were both in the third division, and their FA Cup first round match went to a second replay at Stamford Bridge, which Palace controversially won 1-0. Brighton’s manager, Alan Mullery, stormed into Palace’s dressing room, threw a fiver on the floor and said ‘that’s all you lot are worth.’ It caused a big punch up, and the hatred started. Brighton were known as the dolphins at the time, but they changed it to the seagulls to counteract Palace’s eagles.
Anyway, back to when they got to the first division for the 79/80 season. Their young team started brilliantly, and were top after 8 games. They then drew away to Tottenham and beat the European champions, Nottingham Forest to stay top. They then got well beat away to Liverpool, and it went downhill very quickly after that. They finished 13th, but that was as good as it got. They were bottom after ten games the following season, and Venables heard that the chairman was trying to replace him with Howard Kendall.
QPR made a move for Venables, and the Palace chairman said he could talk to us. After that, Palace were relegated. We signed Mike Flanagan, Clive Allan, Terry Fenwick, John Burridge and Tony Sealey from them.
It was a great watch. Watching it really makes you yearn for the pre Sky days.

I heard that Crystal Palace Brighton story many times but...through a mate, I got to know a Palace fan who’s in his mid 60’s and took a camera along to a lot of away games. Long before the alleged incident he showed me pictures of their boys mobbing up in Brighton before going into The Goldstones North Stand. He has many pics of general mayhem, nickings, ejections, on the pitch, you name it. They were at loggerheads before any Alan Mullery fiver.
A hilarious time for me as a 9 year old with a 13 year old PalARSE supporting brother in the house. His precious Team of the Eighties destroyed when Venables came to us and bought his team with him culminating in the QF in 1982.
As to the Brighton stuff, what a load of crap. Pathetic "rivalry" really...
Yeah I watched that the other night, definitely worth catching. Amazing when you look at the young talent they had back then, and how Venables and Alan Harris got the most out of them. And of course what they did for us, without them I think we'd have spent most of the 80s circling Division 2.
I saw also BT just released a film on Jimmy Greaves, should be a decent watch too.

I love these mysteriously furious rivalries. Always the other lot's fault. Remember the Colchester United Massive trying to drag Simon Royce into the stand to take revenge on him for playing for Southend?

Weird team Palace, they don't really have traditional team colours, they have played in claret and blue, all white and some other weird kits. Also used to be called the Glaziers, but suddenly became the Eagles with that shit badge.
They don't really have the identity that other London teams have.

One of the reasons there's a rivalry is it used to be easier to get to Brighton than Shepherds Bush before London Overground came along. I rememember taking two and half hours to get to Slhurst years ago. I guess Palace was Brightons nearest away ground as well.

It was on BT sport CCJ. Part of their 30 for 30 series.
I also have on the planner, ‘Too good to go down.’ It’s about Man Utd’s demise after Matt Busby’s reign that led to their relegation.
I recorded ‘Greavsie’ which was on last night. There’s some great sporting documentaries on there.
Just watched the "Greavsie" documentary. Knew he was good but what a phenomenal goalscorer he was including 44 goals for England in just 57 appearances with no penalties contrasted with 53 in 120 for Rooney which, in itself, is none too shabby. Shame about the final for him personally although he later received a medal. Didn't have much time for our Gerry though! Big Pat Jennings still looks good for his age.

Didn’t Palaces season fall apart after the goal that came out after hitting the back stantion wasn’t given, score by Clive Allen if I remember correctly.

Jimmy Greaves, goals, wisecracks, shabby cheap jackets and baseball bats. Legend.

Not really. That game against Coventry at Highfield Road came early in the season and was just another in an eventual string of defeats. Checking the stats they lost nine of the first ten and it was after the ninth defeat Venners walked. They only won six league games all season.
