What a song. Just starting a book about it. Always reminds me of Sunday mornings in Bush Court, Shepherds Bush when mum and dad got control of the stereogram and our came Glen Campbell, Don Williams, Dubliners, Dublin City Ramblers, Foster and Allen.....

Those were beautiful days.

Great great song.

Although it's not my type of music, I like Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond ever since the scene in one of my fav films Beautiful Girls, where the guys sing it in the bar.
A really nice film with a good soundtrack.

Thanks for the film tip, Col. I somehow missed that one.

It's obviously a great tune beautifully sung by Campbell but it first hooked me as a kid because I didn't understand half the words - what was a lineman? Why did the county need one? What was a Wichita? Oh, it's a place, where? OK, and what's it like there? Why does it matter that he's "still on the line"? Is that some sort of metaphor?

All that thrown in with the aching emotion of "I need you more than want you and want you for all time" seemed like it was saying something really important and I didn't know what it was.

Absolutely spot on.

It’s a song where the lyrics mean nothing but also everything. The tune carries it along on a sea of melancholy. It’s got a yearning about it that you can’t put your finger on but whisked you away in its current. Beautiful.

I agree Brian, I’d never ever have admitted to this twenty years ago. Thank god for getting older.

Anyone who likes Glen Campbell needs to see the documentary about 'The Wrecking Crew'. Campbell was considered one of the best session guitarists of his generation.

The lady on bass in the Wrecking Crew was superb and really underpinned the music.
I only found out recently what a terrific guitar player Campbell was. Some, in fact most of the American country-ish geetar session players are sensational. Check out Brent Mason.

Amazingly for a top session musician, he couldn't read music. However when he heard something played he could thereafter remember it and play it note perfect.

Just turned 50 the other week. Got an older brother and sister who would probably know you or the people you mention.

Louis Ryan lived in Bush Court and knew just about everyone. There was an Irish family o the fourth floor wasn’t there? Think they used to drink in the Duke of Edinburgh? The Mailcoach was my local.

I remember a lovely blonde Duran Duran fan in Bush Court. Fancied her like mad but never knew her name!

I particularly like the opening lines after the 2000 violin introduction.

"I am the linesman at Notts County

And I run down the road'

Searching for a bloke on an offside overload.

I can see him, he's on fire

I can see him lead the line

And this Notts County lineman will flag him sometime:"

There were the Curry’s a couple of floors above, don’t know if you remember them. My brother Paul is 55 and sister Helen is 54.

Never really went in The Telegraph. It was almost attached to the flats so never felt like I was getting away!

There was a pub in the precinct too but can’t remember it’s name. It became a gay disco pla e years later.

I don't recall them as said a long time

I used to work in the small market in the precinct 76 , don't remember a pub in there just the Galaxy Cinema and Bertorelli's restaurant and the Donut Diner street side

Oh and Homes Hamburger House a rip off of McD but it did no last long. maybe that was too early for you to remember.

We grew up with his greatest hits in the house through my dad. Always loved that song and as a kid always thought it was a sports related job being “a lines man at Notts County and I’ve refed at Maine Road”...

But when Glenn died back in 2017 and like Bowie you start listening to the back catalogue with renewed interest again and I became obsessed with Wichita Linesman for months.

“And I need you more than want you”

“And I want you for all time”

Simply beautiful lyric, voice and melody coming together.

Love that track Brian. It's in one of my favourite films, Midnight Cowboy.
