As a keeper from this time, the gloves/no gloves thing is quite interesting and went in a couple of cycles. When Pat Jennings wore no gloves it was considered the height of masculinity - only softies wore gloves at this time. When people did wear gloves, there were two options - the thin green ones, that only really took the sting out of hard shots and there was the gloves with the rubber dots (like table tennis bats) that were supposedly for greater grip in wet weather. i remember going through all 3 phases - especially with your jersey sleeves rolled up. Speaking of jerseys - there was the obligatory green crew necked one - but I had one of the diamond padded chest jerseys - made out of a sweat shirt material. I think it worked on the assumption that you took every ball ever into your chest.... and most of those were like cannonballs..! happy days indeed...

I had a pair of the green ones.I think it must’ve been about 1971 when I bought my first pair.I think it was a year later when I went to the same shop to get the number tags for your legs after seeing Leeds wear them in the 1972 cup final.

Some of you may have seen this before but it was our own Phil Parkes that was responsible for bringing what would evolve into the modern style latex rubber palmed glove to mass prominence in the UK.
From this he went on to co-found his own goalkeeper equipment mail order business Sukan Sports which imported a lot of the German made brands like Uhlsport and Reusch.
