92/93 Season Review 21:21 - Apr 1 with 4198 viewsslmrstid

Anyone watch this on the club website/Facebook page tonight?

Really enjoyed it.

Oh for football to be like then, felt so much more innocent, much better spread of teams across the league, everyone closer on points....

Oh and we were pretty decent too!

Loved it, what a team we had.

Must have watched the video a hundred times but not for at least 10 years.

Still can’t believe Andy Sinton didn’t get a penalty when Dixon hacked him down at our place!

I know it’s been said before but we really were 2 or 3 players short of challenging for the title that season

Some notable similarities to this season really. Free scoring but lots of calamitous errors at the back. Didn't remember Darren Peacock being so accident prone!

Gary Penrice was just starting to really hit it off up front with Les when he had his leg broken by a bad tackle by Jon Gittens of Middlesbrough the game following our televised FA Cup 3rd round game against Swindon. He'd scored 6 up to the point he got injured and I think he'd have got at least 15 that season had he remained fit. Bradley Allen though seemed to step into his shoes pretty admirably. What really killed us that season though was losing Super Ray for three months just after Christmas. We only won four games whilst he was injured.

Poll: Which is the worst QPR team?

yes that's right, forgot about gittens breaking his leg.

I missed 5 games in total that season, including the time we went top early on in the season when we beat Coventry away 1-0.i was on holiday in cornwall (bude) for 2 weeks.

a truly great side, including the manager.....had everything, goals, skill, workrate.

our away following was great and a good laugh everywhere we went.
even the open days at guinesses were all to look forward to as well.

That challenge on Sinton in the Bury game, horrific!

Before my time, but was very impressed with Penrice, Sinton and Wilkins.

Lower Loft looked amazing, would have loved to have been at those games.

That tackle was horrific, did he even get booked?

The non-penalty for Dixon on Sinton was a joke.

As was the Coventry City own goal, truly exceptional!!

I can't lie, you missed out on some very special years and I think all of us who were regulars can count ourselves lucky to have been able to witness a fine side who should have won a cup.

Really enjoyed it, though that Dixon on Sinton non-penalty decision still makes me angry even now. Just about the worst refereeing decision you'll ever see.

The thing that stood out, and a quick fire highlights reel is never likely to be kind to defenders and goalkeepers because all you see them do is concede, but we dind't half let in some defensively shambolic goals that year. Stejskal, Roberts and Peacock all particularly culpable - this was the season peacock seemed to fall over at crucial moments a hell of a lot to me - Villa A, Spurs H, Wimbledon H.

All the interviews at the end were about how we should have been better than fifth, and we really should have. Battered Ipswich twice and took two points, annihilated Liverpool all night and lost in the last minute, the penalty against Arsenal, poor Stejskal error at Chelsea and at Man City, diabolical defending at home to Palace. I reckon there were a dozen points dropped through really basic stuff. Ten would have put us third and 12 would have put us second.

The really interesting thing is to look at the final league table.

United win by 10 points, then Villa, Norwich and Blackburn all close to each other, but miles ahead of everyone else.

Us comparatively "marooned" in 5th place, but then a ridiculous close spread of points from Liverpool in 6th all the way through the Palace in 20th - just 10 points separated 6th from third bottom after a 42 game season!

Mental, and would never happen now.

In fact having read up quite a few more historic league tables, teams to be spread that closely and evenly to each other in the top tier was pretty common through the whole of football history, until the money really takes ahold and everything is so much more stretched.

Shame.

Serious question, the quality of football in the Premier League has improved immeasurably in 28 years hasn't it?

Some right cloggers plying their trade in the top flight back then.

That QPR team was pretty special and that was a great time. Just needed a decent back up Striker for Penny and dare I say it, a better DMF than Holloway...

The undoing really was peeling back the starting XI, the replacements were mainly gash. The first time I went to LR was that season, 3-1 win v Norwich and a ridiculous loss 1-2 to Wimbledon.

That last paragraph - in years to come fresh-faced youngsters who missed out on 19/20 are surely going watch this season's highlights and say very similar!

Without question the standard has improved in leaps and bounds for a variety of reasons and its across all sports .Diet ,nutrition excersise, coaching, playing surfaces and the list goes on.
Athletes today are finely tuned machines and every sport is trying to improve the product by increasing scoring and protecting superstars so those hatchet men are long gone thankfully .
Its a golden era with HD tv and having the live experience sitting on their couches so hopefully we can do it soon and put this nightmare behind us

A great watch - just started, but had forgotten that Dixon hack - that was one of the clearest pens you'll ever see...
Although 2 weeks later I'm not sure Sints was touched for that last min pen v Boro ;)

That 3-1 v Southampton at the start of the season was amazing. No exaggeratin we should've scored 6 or 7 in the second half - absolutely mullered them for 45 minutes. Relentless.

Bare bones.

Team of 75/76 would have easily beaten the 92/93 team, in my opinion.

The Don Howe team of 1990 never gets much love, imo that was a better team than 92/93
Also the Jim smith sweeper system team of 87/88 was also underrated ,

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

not really bothered which team was better to be honest. They're all QPR - love them all. Even the 1999 one ;)

On last week's Podcast we were discussing ultimate QPR team from players we'd seen and when it came to manager I went for Warnock over Francis because Warnock inherited a catastrophe (albeit quite a well financed catstrophe) whereas just about everybody that did well for Francis he inherited from Don Howe - Bardsley, McDonald, Maddix, Peacock, Wilson, Brevett, Impey, Sinton, Wilkins, Barker, Ferdinand all predated him.

The point was made the other week when Jim Smith passed that he had us fifth and in a cup final and made some terrific signings and never gets mentioned.

If not for that cup final that dare not be mentioned, and the Oxford element, I think Jim Smith would be held in much higher esteem.

Weird thing was Newcastle were bottom at the time and then got relegated we then went and splashed cash on Andy Gray , Peter Reid, Colin Clarke , Andy Sinton , I still to this day can’t fathom out why smith left us for them ( they were also only getting 15k a week at st James Park)

How dare you. They've ALWAYS had St James's Park packed out with loud, passionate Geordies.
