If you look at The bigger picture then perhaps they government could meet him in the middle with a provision for him to review his future tax paying arrangements etc

the amount of job losses in the event virgin go into liquidation is horrific, the airline industry as a whole

Much as I dislike Branson's smugness, it would be unfair to single him out here.
No one seems to mind for example, that James Dyson has a contract to supply the NHS but has used offshore tax avoidance banking for years.

There is a slight difference here - Dyson's not asking for a £500m bailout.

However, it is a scandal that any company in receipt of public money through govt contracts is not vetted in such a way that those using tax avoidance mechanisms are automatically rejected at the tender stage and disqualified from the process.

Dyson and his family were the 4th biggest UK tax payers last year, £103m. He has contracted to supply 10,000 ventilators to the NHS, and will also donate 1,000 to the NHS and 4,000 to 3rd world governments. i suppose you would turn those down as well?

It would surprise me if there weren’t going to be significant staff reduction anyway.

Whilst I agree with this in principle, i.e. he should pay his taxes and he should be selling assets there are issues that are not clear.

How much of Virgin Atlantic does Branson personally own? Virgin Group own 51% and there was recently talk of KLM/AIr France buying a 31% stake but that has been shelved/cancelled. Delta own 49%. So I think it is, just, a British Company.

The main area of concern is jobs, the vast majority of which are in the UK. If Virgin Atlantic went bust, those people would obviously be out of work.

Branson, personally, is said to be worth over £4 billion. He can well afford to make a very large contribution.

These points need addressing and a satisfactory agreement reached before any bailout should be given.

read my post again - I didn't say Dyson was not paying tax (or if he was)

"any company ....using tax avoidance mechanisms"

Anyone paying their fair share should have nothing to worry about

Anyone with a pension is using a tax avoidance scheme. What has he done that's so heinous that he should be disqualified from doing business with the state?

This is a loan not a bailout.

He may be worth $4bn but how much of this is liquid assets. He's offered to use his Island as security for the loan.

I'm not sure that you would get fair values for assets sold in the current climate either.

Seem very harsh to want him to sell assets.

I can only assume you are a relative of the man who I neither labelled a non-tax payer or the committer of any serious crimes. Lets just leave it there

Make them BOTH pay. Simples.
No more government contracts to tax exiles. What could be clearer that ?

I say let him fail

Here is a great short YouTube clip, for those that are interested of a billionaire explaining exactly why airlines should be allowed to fail to a shocked CNBC anchor

Really is a brilliant interview and couldn’t be more on the point of what is going to be the next big talking point over the coming months.

Not sure it's something to vote on really, but it's "our money" so they tell us - personally I think it's time for Branson to shut up and keep quiet or make a contribution like Captain Moore - maybe he could try swimming to Necker from MIami or something...

A pension is probably more of a tax deferral scheme in fairness. You have to pay tax once you start using it.

I`ve read he only holds just shy of 11% of the firm, the rest is American, french and Saudi based, plus smaller investers. So my question is why should our government foot the whole loan figure ?

'You didn't know that was wrong, but now you do. If you do it again, I'll know you are doing it on purpose.'

If his airline goes under many British Business that supply Virgin will also go bankrupt which is worth pointing out at a time when everyone seems to be going after Branson and wanting Virgin to go bust. Tons of British people work for Virgin as well, I know quite a few who will be out of work if this happens. It's not really about the man at the top it should be about everyone in the company needing help. I don;t know if a bailout is the right thing to do but the anger towards him seems a bit over the top

Of course he should pay more tax and he's a prat but he has put his own assets up such as his own island. I find it all a bit odd that so many businesses in this country are currently getting money from the government from this but very little is said about them. Also a lot of his wealth will be shares in his company rather than actual money.

This has been brought up loads of times on social media.
There’s a difference between a poorly run business and a business being forced to stop working.

I’m no fan of his but I don’t want Virgin Airlines to go but, as has been said, tne knock-on will affect loads of other businesses that work with VA.

I think he’s asked for a loan, not just to be bailed out.

However, he’s not done himself any favours by being a tax haven, kind of makes him look hypocritical. Was always the epitome of the champagne-socialist.

Cash for shares:

Saves jobs ✅
Better T&Cs for staff ✅
Saves Route ✅
Greater government say in services ✅
Increase in UK soft power ✅

Should never have been sold off in the first place.

Does he consider himself socialist or even remotely left wing? I'd be surprised. He's literally a billionaire capitalist.

He ain’t no Socialist Bruv!

He’s in no club I’m in. Sued the NHS, avoids tax, and stole thousands of miles of transport routes from the state.

That’s not socialism, champagne or otherwise.

Google says he also backed Austerity, the slag!
