he's probably the only one to see things coming, he called the Fernandes disaster very early, same with Paladini and Flavio. He was/is a QPR fan, in the 20 odd years he's been reporting on QPR you can count on the fingers of a man with no hands who often he's been wrong.

Too true.

Been saying for as long as can remember, it’s madness us having an academy, complete waste of money. Actually don’t think any professional club should be allowed to sign anyone under 15, let them learn playing in school and local leagues, the vast majority never make it anyway.

Whilst the big clubs do have academies though, just cherry pick the good ones who fall aside, seems to have worked quite well for us recently.

I’m more annoyed the amount of time we’ve wasted on WF, as anyone on here who’s ever played sport there says, it’s more suitable as a wind farm than a football academy.

I generally like him and, as Dave says, he's normally factually correct.

This article is poor journalism, though. It's an opinion piece masquerading as fact.

This statement is merely an opinion, and is not backed up by facts, stats, expert analysis or even further comment:

"the academy should go too. Running an academy is not in QPR’s interests either."

It's a fascinating opinion, and worthy of discussion. But it's only an opinion.

A bitter, disparaging piece by a man who has been snubbed and now takes most opportunities to dig out the club. He completely overlooked the benefits which would include the great work in the community done by the club. Dave Mc is yesterday's man wrt QPR and he resents it. .. and it shows. Any more pieces like that and he won't be any better than FLW IMO.

The grass is always greener.

Yes, for as much as Dmac likes to moan about modern journalism etc he doesn't half have a flair for clickbait opportunism now and then.

Anyway this is a valid argument certainly but an old one at this point too.

The one thing I would say that maybe doesn't get mentioned enough is not economic or developmental but simply existential: that a football club without a youth team is missing a fundamental link to its environment and community. Sentimental cobblers that could be replaced with charitable work? Maybe but I dunno.

Was going to say something similar. His view is the academy should go purely from a financial point of view, but says nothing at all of the benefits of including families and young people in the club from young ages (and that's just a start). He also brings up the tired old idea that a 'true' youth product has to have never been associated with any other club at all, and must have been with the club since the age of 8 or something, which to me shows a bit of naivety about how youth football really works.
He also says - look, Furlong was ours but if we get any really good ones they'll be gone at a very young age so what's the point. At the same time he says the good ones we've developed now - Chair, Eze etc - weren't actually ours. The problem with this is that on the one hand he makes the assumption that Prem standard players will be obvious from the age of 15 or 16 and you'll lose them - yet for every Stering there's a Parrett or a Bostock. More importantly, Eze, Chair, Manning, BOS are all living proof that not all great players will get hoovered up by big clubs at 15 or 16.
He makes a lot of good points in there, but it's very one-sided.

Bare bones.

Probably feeling bitter & vindictive over Steve getting ousted. FWIW I think keeping Ramsey has been the best bit of business done by the club in the however many years it is since he joined us. One of the little gears like Ferdinand, Hoos, Sinton, Warburton that make the engine run smoothly and well.

Oh yeah I certainly wasn't giving his views automatic credence. We've all seen enough "Joey's actually a good bloke..." type takes from our old beloveds.

It doesn't really matter if you agree with him or not.

In age of regurgitated clickbait journalism, we have someone who actually covers our club properly. His website does original interviews, breaks original stories and gives actual insights into the club behind the scenes. Feel free to disagree with his opinions, but be thankful for the coverage.

I think if you're going to have an academy then the next natural step is genuine reserve team football. That was a natural stepping stone for players learning their trade. Now it's gone for 99% of players the gap is too large from academy - u 23's to first team.

I agree. If you compare the number of players we've had in the QPR first team from our U23s since Les and Ramsey were involved it's a big improvement compared to previous years. We may not have had them as children but that's probably largely because Chelscum hoover up almost any decent youth player in this area.

'During his time as youth coach at QPR he brought through many talented young players into the professional ranks. As QPR at the time had no academy, many of these players were subsequently signed by other clubs' From Joe's Wikipedia page. Is this true? And who are they? Or did Kevin write it?

Dave mc and gallen can be quite negative and bitter. Dave should stick to getting the news on our club first which he does very well. If everyone says the sky is blue, Dave will says it's grey. Remember him slating faurlin for not tracking runners when when everyone was lauding him and getting ready for his departure to a bigger club before his injury at mk Dons. Even last week I was reading his championship team of the week which didn't have eze in it. I think he's probably the only qpr fan who wouldn't include our number 10. What Dave needs to remember is that although we took him in after his release from Millwall this was a player rejected by everyone else and it was our academy who worked with him and helped propel him to what he is today. Chair is another example of a rough diamond that has been polished up.

Smegma will almost certainly have a better overview than mine on this subject but my understanding is that Joe & Steve were in charge of the QPR academy but it was underfunded gave the appearance of being a job for boys position as they had the Gallen name. Under Les' direction the academy was overhauled, most of the existing academy staff were let go and the whole operation was restructured and properly funded, along with accountability and a plan to deliver with milestones etc. There are a number of those connected with the previous academy on social media sites always looking to put the boot in on the people now involved in the academy and stress how none of our players came through the academy. Factually accurate as it will take 8-10 years before one of our U6 or U8 players signed under the new regime to be ready for a first team place. In the meantime we have some talented people looking at players released from other clubs who they think will fit into the plan for QPR going forward and, so far, this seems to be a successful tactic until our Academy players come on tap. I am sure that if Les or Ramsey thought that Steve and/or Joe were the people to have in the new academy they would have been retained. Whether his methods were draconian or not Les is quite disliked by a lot of people working at the club because so many that had been there for a long time lost their jobs and the resentment is still there. There may have been a few cases of the baby disappearing with the bath water (Terry Springett?) but since the Tune Group have been marginalised and Total Soccer Group became the major shareholder that the clubs fortunes have taken an upturn and the feeling is the club is starting to be more like "QPR" again.

The grass is always greener.

Dave does remember that, it's the basis for his piece. His argument is that everything below U17 be scrapped because it's been fairly unproductive, costs several million pounds a season, and is a rigged game EPPP wise that would have been hard enough already given our crowded catchment area.

I think most over the overhaul that resulted in Steve Gallen etc going was done under Mike Rigg rather than Ferdinand.
