Who would you try to sign 17:34 - Jul 18 with 19281 viewsWrightUp5hit___

They keep telling us about the number of out of contact players looking for new clubs.

Add to that the players at clubs, where thanks to CoVid, there are going to be big, fire sale bargains.

So forgetting about the star players, that will still command premium prices, or Premier League shithousery and stockpiling. Who are the players that you would like to see at Loftus Road.

The Sheffield Wednesday Sam's, Winnall and Hutchison have been mentioned. Clive mentioned the well underrated Alex Mowatt. Tyrese Campbell would probably be a reach but maybe Stoke are heading into end of Sky money soon mode.

Anyways, who do you reckon?

Conor Chaplin from Barnsley and if they don't stay up Elliot Lee off Luton, although I think they may have pulled off something of a miracle escape today. Two decent strikers who read the game well at this level.

Never knowingly right.

I don't know which players we should sign but we need a defensive coach with some fresh ideas for defending set pieces - we look like we are going to concede at every corner and free kick. Plenty of players in the box but don't seem to get to the ball first

Mowatt deffo also liked the look of Woodrow. I've got to be honest the older i get the less i know about other teams players so i will bow to the superior knowledge of our team. All i know is that it needs to be a couple of first team ready pros similar to picking up Ball that will strengthen the spine of our side.

Also again we should be looking at scholars released by prem academies to bolster our u23s.

I would offer 3 year contracts to Shodipo & Bettache, maybe one for Joe Gubbins too but he hasn't been given the time in the first team yet. IMO these are the guys that could bring in some money. maybe next season we might see glimpses of Nathan Carlyle & Jake Frailing too.

The grass is always greener.

Chaplin for me has impressed in both games this season , won’t want massive money either I’d think

... but your solution cannot be to offer long term contracts to every player we have who shows promise; there has got to be a bit of balance to only do that once they have proven themselves capable. For example, clearly there have been glimpses that Shodipo is going to be good, but he has not shown it consistently because of injury. Ideally, he would have had a season long loan somewhere League One to enhance his development.

He hasn't had that and may have to be thrown in next season, which may or may not work out. There is a balance which is tough to find. If he is thrown in and starts to prove himself, when is the time to offer a contract increase? Instantly as you suggest, when there is 18 months left on the contract? 15, 12 months?

And Bettache. Two appearances at this level where he has looked "tidy". He's been on loan in NON-LEAGUE, so no-where near proven. Development contracts need to work both ways. He'd be a fool to sign up for 5 years limiting his potential income, so the plan has to be get him on loan at a better level than he has been and see how that goes before talking of extensions.

And Carlyse and Gubbins? Never seen them at Championship level or anything even close - why on earth would we throw money at them now and why would they sign anything long term?

The point is that, with Bosman, the timing of new contracts for young talent is absolutely critical. You can get it wrong and be forced to sell or you can get it wrong and be lumbered with loads of players who aren't going to make it.

It a'int easy, is it?

Can we go out yet?

On loan... Gayle from Newcastle. Not good enough for the Prem but a really good striker and won't play for them again after the takeover.

No idea really. Whilst I'll always watch football, I don't concentrate on any team other than QPR, so any opinion I'd have on our U23s or other players would largely be based on what I've read or what others say.

We have to trust that the club has people employed to look at other players in sufficient depth to know who is out there and who can do a job.

What I do know is:
1. Although limited, we have to stick with Lumley: Kelly; Dieng ; Barnes in goal.
2. Barbet is the only guaranteed starter we have at CB, so at least one needs to come in, preferably a heading machine who can play a little.
3. At Right back, we live with Kakay and Kane, but could do with squad cover in that position (eg: CB who can play RB at a push or some other versatile player. Dom Ball may be able to play RB if needed, but then who covers him?
4.LB - all depends on who stays around. Happy with Manning and Wallace with Niko as back up. If anyone of those doesn't stay, then a similar replacement would make sense.
5. Wingers - with BOS gone and Eze undoubtedly moving on, the wide options look like Shodipo and Chair. One or two wingers incoming ideally, but we'll probably have to cope with just one.
6. CM - Happy to sign Amos if he will fit into our wage structure, Happy with Cameron when he is fit to play and happy with Ball even though he has been woeful in lockdown aside from the last two games. I'd still like some help there whether we do or don't sign Amos and would hope that we get a big old lump there to to enhance the size of our squad.
7. Up top. Where to start? We have nothing. Oteh does not look like he'll make it at this level, so we need a new strike force. Is that one, two or three? Is it loan or perms? Horrible, expensive choices to be made, but when Hugill and Eze go, there is no-one left in our squad who can score regularly. It's all well and good Warburton pointing out that we create enough chances, but you cannot simply turn a player scoring 4 or 5 into one scoring 15 in a season; it don't work like that.

So, sorry, I didn't answer that question, just responded to your post suggesting that we sign our U23s up.

Can we go out yet?

Revising my earlier statement of not knowing any players and having done some research and based on the fact that we all expect Manning, Bright and Eze to leave:-

Chester
Mowatt
Jackson Irvine
Lowe
Hogan
Woodrow as stated

I think Stoke would ask for bucks for Campbell, as in his first season at Championship level he has scored goals. I also know this isn't FM2020 and we are going to be limited by our wage structure but we need too beef up our spine and i think we will have to take a risk on a few players maybe on someone thats had a few injuries but has a decent character someone like Sam Winnall.

I think we'll need a LB and another wide player but I couldn't think of one :)

Not too sure Barnsley's best players will be in our price bracket tbh given we need a few in. I do like Chaplin, Mowatt and Woodrow though (surprised Ollie never tried for the latter).

Hard to say what the competition's going to be like for the best-known lower league performers. Are the likes of Woolfenden and Downes at Ipswich still going to be prohibitively expensive or do we have a shot? I'd be nosing around several of the good crop at Crewe, Ryan Wintle especially. Rob Dickie at Oxford many have noted from the playoffs. Alfie Kilgour at Bristol Rovers has had rave reviews. Ben Whiteman at Doncaster needs a move, and Kieran Sadlier is out of contract now IIRC. David Sesay at Crawley or Randell Williams at Exeter could be worthwhile Bright replacements. Charlie Kelman at Southend is gettable for a promising striker.

Joe Williams at Wigan is well worth asking about if we can stump up the £1.5m he's reportedly going for in their fire sale. When Eze goes it always seemed inevitable MW would look at Kieran Dowell but maybe his recent form has caught attention again. Tom Rogic at Celtic is another out of favour MW fave similar to Dowell. Ryan Woods we all know and would suit our play far more than Wall's but he's become such a meme on here over the years I can only expect Ben Watson style meh if he ever did come.

Most likely we'll be taking a strong interest in players that have outgrown their academies again. Dan Barlaser had a breakout season on loan at Rotherham on loan from Newcastle - with the possible upheaval there another loan at a higher level would make sense. Kyle Scott there was linked to us on social media and even if it is made up that sounds very much about right. Hinds, Dinzeyi etc released by Spurs worth a look. Smith-Rowe and John-Jules at Arsenal ought to be highly sought after.

Altogether though I'm hopeful our scouts have tabs on players a bloke on a message board couldn't pick off a squad list.

Covid will change everything for everyone but I have a sneaking suspicion we’re in an ok place for our transfer / wage budget after all the cutting.

Remember we were trying to sign Scott McKenna for £3.5m last window. Since then we’ve saved ourselves Pugh hall and wells‘ significant wages. That’s before we get millions for BOS et al.

My prediction? Two experienced strikers on loan again (good model and we’re an attractive proposition - making dead wood look good and winning their clubs lucrative transfers), a young up and coming forward, an experienced centre back, a utility defender, an experienced midfielder, a BOS replacement.

Decent transfer fees for the centre back, midfielder and BOS replacement.

Would definitely have Cauley Woodrow from Barnsley and we should be asking West Brom for Callum Morton on Wednesday for a season long lone for exchange of a few goals.

Sounds like you are far more on the button than I am! Sadly i think you are right with the Barnsley lads.

As we all know, the 1st team squad needs padding and experience/steal without blocking anyones pathway while again we look to bring in some released Prem academy graduates.

I trust Breadman, Les and Chris Ramsay to have their fingers on the pulse. Les said in a recent interview that they were doing Zoom meetings and already trying to get bodies in.

I look forward to seeing what happens and the conversations that follow.

Marc Mcnulty. I've wanted him here ever since i saw him play for Sheff utd at Loftus road in the fa cup a few years ago.

No idea where he is now and He's probably about 47 years old but he played like a bio-splice molecular level Emilio Butragueno/Hansi Müller/Bernd Schuster kinetic Cyborg that day. Magic.

Depending on where you read Reading either have an option or obligation to make the loan permanent at the end of the season. Not that they ought to be able to afford it obviously...

On the original thread title I know I mentioned Mowatt in match preview, no idea how realistic that is, but Jackson Irvine is on a free. Liked him a lot at Burton and Hull, who are two very difficult clubs to play for at this level. 27, free transfer, significant upgrade on Amos in central midfield. Think he's on about going back to Celtic but would be happy with him.

Ronan Curtis. Loads of potential and a very Rangers sort of player.

That said, the last player I was desperate for us to sign who we then did was Jordan Cousins, so therein lies a lesson, eh? (Although he's meant to have been playing well for Stoke since O'Neill took over.)

I could see the logic in Mowatt coming, but isn't Hutchinson already all but signed? I can't see us bringing in both, especially if Amos comes back either on loan or permanently.

I can see us going back in for Shankland or Lyndon Dykes north of the border. Even if we got another year with Hugill, we need at least one genuine prospect of our own upfront. Strikers are where the money is for a club with our model. And much as I really like Hugill, someone who can finish more than one chance in 17 would be worth half a dozen places in the table.

If Forest went up or just give up on him, the other player I could see MW going for would be Tyler Walker - Warburton gave him his debut and talked him up at the time. That said, given we've just got shot of his brother, it might be a bit delicate.
