Looked like a Nuke going off, looks like it was a warehouse with out of date ammonium nitrate setting it off.Death toll will probably rise considerably over the next few days.

May well be an avoidable accident but I 'll bet Israel won't be sending any aid.

The first thing they did was offer aid.

My best firend growing up was Lebanese and is now back living in Beirut. I messaged him after I saw the explosion which looked like nothing else I've seen, and I was a little panicked when he didn't respond but assumed the he was probably getting loads of calls network busy etc.

Thankfully he responeded at 2am last night. House damaged, thankfully they've been able to get out of Beirut into the countryside, but he is shaken up (4 young kids), thinks they can maybe repaid the house but just counting his blessings his family are all ok.

I've been wanting to visit for years but he told me not to, it has the potential to be such an amazing country, but the politicians there are so corrupt, they thought there might be a new start with their mini-revolution but seems nothing has changed and now they are in really touble as a country financially, never mind the political interference form elsehwere.

Poll: Will we stay up?

Beirut on 12:32 - Aug 5 with 2969 viewsrobith

We went to Beirut and Lebanon last year and stayed in Mar Mikhael, about 1km from the explosion. People we met there were sharing videos on insta, and the whole area, essentially the city's Shoreditch or Dalston, has been completely obliterated. If the offices around Martyr's Square and the grand mosque hadn't been closed thousands would already be dead.

The country is already suffering heinously from covid which has decimated the economy to the point starving people are committing suicide in public because people don't have enough to eat. Now this? It seems unfathomably cruel.

Everyone we met was so lovely, but people of all religions said the same thing - we're trying so hard but government corruption makes life untenable. There was a saying "Israel hates us, Syria hates us, the govt hates us - the only friend we have is the sea" - so for the port to be the cause.....god.

All those wonderful people and all those wonderful places. It's heartbreaking.

One huge explosion that. One in the name of the Cross are we making that goes up like that? Sheesh, doesn't seem right.

Basically it was a 2,700 tons of fertiliser that got dumped there 6 years ago by a shipping company that couldn't be arsed to move it further

I also really worry about the consequences in the region. Lebanon is already a ball of rage at the government - and this catastrophe has come direct from government mismanagement. We're also 4 days away from the UN saying Hezbollah murdered the Prime Minister in 2005. There are thousands of Syrian refugees in the country, and Israel and Syria have just started scrapping in the Golan Heights. Throw in a failing Trump and we've got a recipe for this to be just the start of a proper sh!tshow.

Hopefully the tragedy may bring some people to their humanity

Criminal if true. As I firefighter I pooh a brick when we turn out to a barn fire and we are told it has fertiliser inside. Basically an explosive. As if the poor buggers don't have enough to contend with.

I did a course at work on carrying class 1 dangerous goods on the road. That normally covers fireworks, but it also contains sections about fertilisers like that and how dangerous they can be.We wouldn’t carry much on our trucks, but we were told about its potential use by terrorists in bomb making.
Having that amount stored so badly in Beirut is criminal. You can’t muck about with this sh@t.
Condolences to everyone affected by this incident.

Watching on the news last night, I said to the Mrs, “ I bet that was a beautiful place to go before all the wars it’s had” such a shame as it would probably be top of most people places to go.

My neighbour some years was from Lebanon. He always told me how beautiful the country was and it had the potential to be a huge tourist destination. However, he always maintained that it was run by hugely corrupt individuals and a Hezbollah was taking a foothold. That’s why he moved his family to the UK.

They also have big problems with a crumbling economy.Inflation is making things too expensive for the ordinary worker to buy. This won’t have helped their already desperate situation.

It's a lovely country.
I was there less than three years ago for a week and it looked to have emerged from years of war.
Hezbollah can't be blamed for this and we all have our suspicions.
