Matt Smith (the big lad) 13:50 - Aug 12 with 3961 viewsMyke

With Moore having a medical at Cardiff and Smith surplus to requirements at Millwall, maybe we should bring him back for a year. People may forget he contributed 20 goals/assists in his final season and proved pretty adept at clearing away corners too - we could do worse. Knows the championship, knows the club, low wages, free or nominal transfer

Moore was wanted because he's mobile.

I liked the lad, thought he got a bit too much low level grief and was the archetypal "he'd do a job for you" - but I think his job skills are probably not those that Warbs is looking for even for any plan B.

For that in my mind is what Smith was when he was at our place. Plan B.
Usual scenario, we are 1-0 down, usually against a team we should not be losing to, and as the clock hits 80mins you know who would start warming up and then enter the fray.

In a perverse way it almost felt like cheating in a way - we cannot out football this team, we are not good enough to break them down and score, so all we can do in desperation to not get beat and with 10 mins to go, is throw a very big lad up front, hope we get a corner and he is likely to get his head to it and put it in or at least on target for a follow up - and then if the opposition got a corner, then he stands in the middle of the 6 yard box and heads it out.

So, as Warbs does not seem overly interested in his team defending set pieces, that is 50% of Smiths usefulness nullified.

If we thought we would keep Manning and Shidipo and Kakay could whip in crosses from the right, then perhaps to get the ugly win he could be a plan B attacking option again.

From a footballing ability pov, I'm not a fan.

However, if on a free and wage demands low enough as a plan b, I would have to say yes.

That game against Millwall, changed when he came on at half time. We held on by the skin of our teeth and could have even lost it. First half they tried to take us on at football and lost decisively. Second half they battered us.

He might have gained us enough points to actually make the playoffs, if he had been here last season.

We are having trouble finding one striker, let alone two and he could be cheaper than Mlaker was whilst definitely being more productive.

I don't think he'd want to come back to be honest.

He always wanted to be Plan A, rather than a 80 minute sub. It was clear Warburton wasn't interested in that and it wasn't a good fit, so he packed his bags and waved good bye. Why would he return?

Yes, I think he wanted to be a starter, didn't he?

While I love Mathieu, it's weird that the sale of Matt Smith is still lamented and discussed more than the (enforced) sale of Luke f'n Freeman. I honestly don't get it. I mean, we scored more goals than in any other season for blooming ages. We really didn't even miss him slightly except in the most unusual circumstances at the end of the season. and even then only a bit.
Not for me, Clive.

Bare bones.

We could do worse. We could also do better.

Just can't get my head around the obsession with wanting ex-players back, often seemingly for the sake of it. Some kind of agoraphobia? Kevin Gallen worked out OK. Any others (loans excepted)?

I've said it before, whether it is Smith or not, any striker we get in I want him to be ours, whether on a one year or longer contract. We cannot risk getting another Wells who gets poached to another championship club in Jan after having a great spell with us.

We want to push on towards the playoffs this term, or at least solid top 10.

If BOS and Eze were both to leave then it makes it even more important to invest in a striker that is proven to get 10+ or 15+ goals in a season to cover the loss of their goals

Smith's goal record for us (21 in 92 games), especially considering how often that was off the bench, certainly could have been worse, but his mobility, ball skills and were indubitably limited. Either way, if Hugill doesn't return (likely) and Eze is off (also likely), we will need at least two strikers in and able to hit the ground running (preferably faster than Matt S) before the next serving of fanless Champ football.

Rangers' best attacking traditions have always seemed to come from striker duos (Allen and Goddard, Flanagan and Allen, Byrne and Bannister - please add in other golden partnerships according to age and preference), though the advent of 4-5 1, false 9s etc. has made those halcyon days feel sadly further off than ever.

I wouldn't say Gerry's second spell here was all that great. Signing him was a bit of an old pals act by Venables. He definitely wasn't the same player pre his back injury and I don't think the hard plastic pitch was good for him having had that sort of injury previously. He must have only played a dozen or so games before we got our money back transferring him to Coventry.

Martyn Busby was steady and reliable enough but again wasn't the same player he'd been pre his badly broken leg. Too young to have seen Springett.

True enough. If we'd had a proper GK + defence, we'd have been promoted.

To be fair I don't think anyone would be clamouring for him back if we had Wells and Hugill here still.

Probably way down the list of forwards we want/need but was always good for a 10 minute battering ram cameo.

His last season with us he had the 4th worst chances>goals ratio in the division.

I think to get the best out of him the whole team has to play to suit him, not sure that’s good plus he seems to be more of a sub role these days.

Tunisian bloke, or was he Algerian, you know, the fella Warnock brought back from Arsenal who scored all those goals that got us up in 2011.

What’s he’s f.....g name? Redknapp drummed him out for being a bit tubby.

Him anyway did all right coming back the second time. Abel or something....

Marcus Bignot - his second spell was a rousing success.

Why? Because he was a Holloway man, a rare type who pulls on the shirt and gives it absolutely everything they have and then some.

In his original spell I see him score one of the most ridiculous goals I've ever seen at LR against Bury. Love it if someone could dig that gem out the archives.

Firstly, somewhat disingenuous to describe Smith as a 10 minute battering ram. A lot more to his game than that, actually a pretty decent 1st touch for a big guy. Secondly, to suggest Warburton has no interest in defending corners is (hopefully) tongue in cheek. We had one of the worst defensive records in the division and would have been comfortably relegated if we hadn't scored so many goals. A huge chunk of those goals (Wells/Hugill) have already being removed and the likelihood that Eze's will be too. Unless we find a way to stem the tide at the other end we will be in trouble. Thirdly, not suggesting that Smith is a better option than Moore, but Moore is NOT coming here. Fourthly, I don't lament the loss of Smith over Freeman or vice versa. We reality is we didn't miss either of them last season We did miss Smithies and Furlong, but can't see either of those possibly rejoining us next season Fifthly, I don't have any great desire to bring back any ex -players, but we are in a unique set of circumstances, with the season restarting in a few weeks and the window extending well beyond its beginning. We could find ourselves in the same situation with Eze as when Remy left after the season began, which would be a huge blow. So Smith knows the club, the division and would be a safe addition to the squad. Finally, Smith's desire to be first choice, stemmed from the appalling way both he and Sylla were treated by McClaren after the 7-1 defeat to WBA. They started as 1st choice strikers and then were bombed out with the kids after the arrival of Wells and Hemed ( can anyone honestly say Smith would have contributed less than Hemed over a whole season?) Sylla left in January, but Smith was kept on for cover and ending up scoring a few goals including that beauty with his final kick (hardly the goal of a 'battering ram' or 'lump'. ) But he was so embittered with the way he was treated he was determined to leave. A year later who knows? I learned that anything is possible in football when Warnock signed the 'sewer rat' for Leeds
