Apparently the heat did for it and the cast iron has shattered- no one allowed to go near it or under it as at risk of imminent collapse

It's a beautiful bridge and must be looked after, amazing to think that we sold London Bridge to the Yanks all them years ago. (selling England by the Pound).

I'm fascinated by old structures and their construction and by our heritage (especially London's)

The Construction Company I retired from has just won an £11 million contract to build a modern extension to London's oldest know brick building 15th century Bromley Hall.
I'd love to have been involved (geek I know).

Had never heard of the place - well worth a google. I'm guessing the extension is the one shown in the last image on this link

Weird isn't it? I imagine all the doors and windows were put in later and that has changed the whole look.

There's an amazing place in Stockport - now a museum - where the house was started about the same time and bits added over the centuries - doesn't look medieval from the outside but inside there are places where you can see the original construction. In a couple of places they have the wall stripped back to show the layers

EDIT
This place

Looks like a Victorian shop in the photo but round the back its half-timbered

Good memories as a youth of the bridge, worked evenings/Saturdays as a schoolboy for a general store in Barnes, delivering little boxes of groceries etc in one of those sit up and beg old bikes, monster of a thing with a big metal basket on the front, going all around Castlenau, so the bridge often in view.

Up to about 30 years ago used to cross quite often to go trout fishing on the old Barn Elms reservoirs now the London Wetland Centre, a little gem of a place , was on the flight path of Concorde into Heathrow and often used to see the great plane coming in fairly low when sitting on the banks.

Was at that Wetland Centre last week. Never even knew it was there, really good place, well worth a visit. Last time I was there I was playing for Hampton Rangers U11s on the pitches next the reservoirs.

How the hell does it get to £140m + ?
If this was wartime the army would turn up and bridge the gap within 24 hours and it would be strong enough to have tanks run across it.

I saw an idea to replace the old one with a replica and place the old one ala London Bridge on the Hammersmith sky line.

It would be a bit wasted there though.

Running over Hammersmith bridge on a freezing monday January morning during PE where it was so cold the wind gave me ear ache is something I will never forget.

Apparently the structure is so bad that in addition to people being barred from walking across it, they've banned boats from sailing under it.
The New York Times says the situation re the bridge is indicative of the demise of the UK as a top ranking country.

To be fair there is no greater doom monger about the UK that the New York Times.

If you want to see fading, decrepit and down right dangerous infrastructure - go to the US.

In their obsession with small government they've woefully underfunded for a long long time. The New York subway is a joke compared to the London Underground.

Re Hammersmith bridge. We should face facts, remove it, preserve parts in a museum, and put in a replica asap.

In '89-'91 my company refurbished the Chelsea River (Rail) Bridge, which is cast iron. It's a slow and laborious process and requires a closure if for no other reason than there would be lots of lead in the air during the cleaning and blasting.

Agree on the last paragraph. It's getting a bit silly now isn't it? I'm all for preservation, listed buildings, hate some of the devlopments that go up now etc etc but it's a key access route and crossing and you currently can't even row a boat under it in case it collapses on you. Admit defeat already, this is silly.

Obviously the irony of this will be lost on them. Hammersmith Bridge is over 130 years old and hasn't collapsed. They hardly have a good record in this area:-

So much politricks involved.

LBHF v LBRUT
TfL v LBHF v Gov
GOV & Local Tories v LBHF

The fact that a lot of people in positions of power are using it to score points is very unhelpful

Agree, the New York Subway is atrocious compared to the Underground. Them bloody Metro Cards and constantly having to top them up instead of just tap in / out. At least they've got rid of the tokens at last!

Also agree re Hammersmith Bridge, everything has a finite life, fine architecture or not. It lasted a lot better than all the 60s Brutalist stuff which are crumbling up and down the country.

Sometimes you just have to chop and start again, beautiful or not. That's life.

Just rebuild it in exactly the same style but with more durable materials. Everyone's happy.

As a Hammersmith resident, I've just had a Dear Neighbour letter from the council. In it, it says reports that a temporary bridge could be built for £7m as nonsense and wouldn't solve the problem of danger to river traffic passing under the old bridge.
Favourite is for a ferry service but still lots of difficulties with that. They have “shovel ready” plans to restore the bridge but need £141m or so. The money needs to be raised from various organisations plus a possible toll.

£141m to repair??

I reckon Rangers could build a new stadium over it from North to South for less than that.
Then charge a toll to go under us.

And where’s Genghis in all this. Half the bridges seem to be closed, TfL runs on hand outs, and the roads you used to drive are steadily being blocked off. Yet London will still vote the tosspot back into office.

Went passed this morning and its changed the feel of the place completely with no bridge there. It was never a great option for cars but at least you could get over by foot or on bike.

My friend manages the one up in the North East - the Washington Wetlands Centre. They are beautiful places yeah - good for clearing the head and witnessing the odd lockdown skirmish between the ducks.

On the original topic, that bridge - fcuking hell what a mess. But as a regular user of both train systems mentioned I think the subway is getting a bit of rough treatment. So just for balance I'll add that the subway has express trains, air conditioning, generally cheaper fares and more room in the carriages than the underground. They're quite different systems built in different ways but wouldn't say one was obviously better than the other.

The NY Times loves to hang an article on a big fat metaphor and wouldn't be surprised if they've over cooked their spam on that one.

A couple of points to consider from my construction viewpoint...

There are numerous examples of fading infrastructure in the US, the worst of them concentrated in the States which would endorse large government.

Obsession with small government? That would be the greater power of the local voters to stop authorities spending taxpayer money. A good infrastructure example would be Britain's HS2 project, which from what I've gathered, is considered to be a complete waste of money by the majority of the population but on it goes regardless.
