Gut Feelings on New Signings 16:35 - Aug 17 with 9037 viewsAntti_Heinola

I always think new signings are interesting for how we feel about them, because as fans I have a theory our initial reaction to them is very seldom close to how we feel a year or two down the line.

Charlie austin is a good example for me of one I thought was a brilliant signing and was a brilliant signing and he was everything I thought and hoped he would be - and more.

But then you have Cousins, who I thought was a super signing, just what we needed, and was never really close to it.

I remember being vaguely excited about Trevor Sinclair, but he turned out much better than we could've thought.

I thought Danny Cullip was a perfect signing, and he was for about 3 months, then fell off the edge of the cliff.

I thought Clint Hill was a depressing signing - and Derry. Er...

I was REALLY excited about Danny Nardiello - thought that was a cracking signing. Awful.

I thought Park was a great signing, even as I didn't love the way it was done.

Alex Smithies I kind of thought was second choice to Bentley and wasn't excited...

Other than Austin, do we ever really know? Sometimes the worst signings turn out to be the best and vice versa.

Bare bones.

I thought McLaren was going to take us back to the Premiership ☹️

What do we know hey.

Austin, like you say, fcking great signing straight off the bat. Only downside was I'd wanted him from Swindon when he was cheaper. That same summer I was thrilled with Matt Phillips as well who I thought subsequently flattered to deceive somewhat.

My write up for Steven Caulker was pretty legendary. "Even QPR can't mess this up, perfect signing" - turned out to be addicted to just about everything you can be addicted to. Speaking of which, aren't we due another Guardian puff piece soon? Also liked Mutch.

Smithies loved, loved him at Huddersfield. Clint Hill was disappointed we didn't get Dusko Tosic on a perm instead. Dom Ball I said was crap and the signing was bent.

Junior Hoilett was the one. God I thought we'd arrived.

The thing is, I don't think clubs often know either. Obviously if you bought Van Dijk or De Bruyne tomorrow you'd feel reasonably confident about them doing OK for you, but beyond that, there are so many variables and unknowables, it's always a punt. And the tighter the budget, the truer that is.

The bit of us as fans that always stays a little childlike — we all do this I think — can't help thinking of managers as all-seeing, Clough or Klopp-like geniuses, working to a sophisticated masterplan beyond our understanding of the game, seeing things we never could in a player and how they're going to fit into next season's all-conquering team. Whereas the reality is more often suddenly having your left back sold for a quick few quid, replacing them with the fifth lad on a list drawn up from a ragbag of scouting reports and agents' phone calls, and hoping for the best.

I always remember seeing an interview with Wenger in his pomp when he was asked about converting Henry to a striker. At the exact point the journo was clearly expecting him to explain the insight behind this game changing masterstroke, he admitted it was essentially a bit of a hunch, and he had a sinking feeling early on he'd end up sticking him back on the wing and having to buy a proper centre forward. You just never know.

And I still remember the day we signed Doudou on a permanent deal as one of the happiest of my life as a Ranger. (Second only to the day we did the same with Diakite.)

To an extent it's the same with any kind of recruitment, football or otherwise. You hope you've done all your homework and made the right decision but ultimately you can never be completely sure how it will work out.

I saw a game on the TV when Chris Samba was playing for Blackburn against the Arse and strewth it was noticeable how he stood out as a 'top of the tree' defender, I'm not saying he was bad but being stood behind the goal when Fulham tonked us that night and seeing how bad he was I was delighted when we got rid, huge disappointment for me.

I knew Hateley was shit when he was introduced to the crowd as our new signing at LR on crutches.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

I was excited about Sammy Koejoe which didn't end well but also had high hopes for Andy Sinton which went better mainly as I had a mate at school who was a Brentford fan and he'd been raving about him all season

Like Clive, I thought Caulker and Mutch were great signings

I remember thinking Onouha was a 'Rolls Royce' of a signing. And whilst he did excellently for us he didn't end up being the classy centre back I assumed he would be.

Loved the Hoilett singing, he was young and had done so well at Blackburn. Obviously hadn't been scouted whatsoever.

Thought Park was an excellent signing. Likelihood is had he gone to a settled club and been allowed to just get on with things he would've been fine. Instead we made him club captain and asked him to be a deep lying playmaker.

I also thought Ben Sahar was going to be brilliant

Trusted one of our most revered managers judgement implicitly, and he bought one of our most derided players ever!

Dave Sexton / Brian Williams

And yes I am aware the bulk of THAT team was brought in by Gordon Jago, but Sexton added Masson, Hollins, Dave Needham

Oh yes me too, big fan of the Ben Sahar loan.

TBF the best and most important signing that summer was Simon Walton and he snapped his leg in the final friendly.

Can`t remember the general concensus at the time of signing, given his conections, pretty sure it wasn`t very glowing but Paul furlong, what a legend.

'You didn't know that was wrong, but now you do. If you do it again, I'll know you are doing it on purpose.'

Can't pin that one on Dave Sexton, Wrighty. Frank Sibley was officially manager by that time. However DS probably doesn't get off entirely scot free.

I don't know for sure, it's just a hunch, but we played Bury in the League Cup the season before and it's possible that Williams played the game of his life against us and Dave Sexton may have mentioned to Sibley as his number two that Williams might be a player worth going after. As I said just a hunch.

Anybody see that League Cup tie in September 1976 at LR remember a stand out performance from Williams?

Not only was it not hugely welcomed, he also had a torrid first few months with us, not scoring and getting dogs' abuse from a large section of the crowd, particularly after Vauxhall Motors.

Was that the Fulham pre season game ?
Lee cook was crocked by zesh rehman on his debut for them and was never the same again if I recall

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Ach, where is our wonderful Gordon when we need him.

My personal recollection is of Williams arriving in June and Dave Sexton leaving in the July. Maybe because someone else wanted to sign Williams? Now there's a different spin!

remember us playing bury about that time yes, in the league cup.
score was 2-1 or 2-0 to us.
possibly the same year we got knocked out by villa in the semis.

I'm sure we signed the wrong player. I seem to remember there was a winger who looked nothing like Williams who had a blinding game. When I saw a picture of Wolfman after we signed I knew we'd f*cked up.

Hard working and willing to learn seems to be a common theme? Young lads coming through youth teams a bit more of the maverick but Ball, Kelly, Dykes, Amos, Wallace, Hughill have a definite head down and graft side to them.
Usually a better chance they'll meet supporters aspirations I think

I don't think Mutch can be beat here. No one else just pretty much simply ceased to become a professional senior player, un-injured at the age of 22, after signing. Still only 28.

Esteban Granero ('The Pirate') was the one for me. Really thought we had moved into a higher sphere with signings like this. Er....

The excellent qprnet.com and it's fantastic stats files say that he signed on 14th July 1977 and Frank Sibley had been appointed as manager on the 10th July a day after Dave Sexton resigned. Possibly a mutual decision as DS would have likely had some say before resigning.

I was overjoyed when we signed Wells on loan, I had been raving about him since he was at Bradford. He didn't turn out to be quite as good as I had hoped in the first loan but by God he did the business second time around.

Then Palace spent 2-3 million on him to the same ends. Mate of mine who supports them still can't get his head around that one.

Thought once we finally extracted Cureton from the far East we would absolutely romp it. Had too many good strikers in the end.
