Ireland's minister for Ag Dara Calleary has being forced to resign for attending a golf function of more than 80 people despite new Govt restrictions of 15 people meeting indoors. This govt has only being in place a couple of months and he is the second minister for ag to resign after Barry Cowen lasted a few days following Dink driving revelations. You couldn't make it up. To (mis)quote Wilde ' to lose one minister for agriculture Mr Martin, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose two looks like carelessness'

Concept of individual ministerial responsibility appears alive and well, as opposed to the countries to your east and west. Where the playbook is to: not apologise; deny its their fault; and allow the spin doctoring to move the matter along.

Of course, page two of the playbook: apologise; resign; then lay-low for six months; and then brought back!

Another bunch of incompetent t**to running a counrty.
Nepotism has run through Irish politics for decades. Jobs for the boys. Its still the case of not what you know but who you know.
On a lighter note. I'm no George Clooney but christ, Brian Cowan has a face only a mother could love!!

I guess that's a fair point PH although such is our level of covid fatigue right now I think he would never survive the backlash. It's the complete lack of basic cop on that is staggering. Calleary who is a neighbour of mine, was overlooked for a cabinet position the first time around, and whinged away on local radio about it. Then we gets a second bite at the cherry he fuks it up. Phil Hogan, our EU Commissioner was at the same event, but he is probably to thick-skinned to quit. Last week the CEO of Bord Failte (our tourist board) had to resign because he went on holiday to... Italy! Like I say, you couldn't make some of this stuff up

That concept is unusual for us in Ireland, John. Time was when we'd look at Britain and be envious that they held that tradition whereas our chancers would never resign. The last couple of weeks have been revelatory for Ireland in that respect.

The event in question had 81 attendees and was organised by the Oireachtas (Joint Houses of Parliament). There's blood in the water yet. More may have to be fed to the frenzied masses.

I wonder if there's anything, short of being charged with murder, that would convince our current government in Westminster to resign. Mind you it's hard to beat Jonathan Aitken, the then Treasury Minister's simple sword of truth speech, shortly before being found guilty of perjury.

Who I just found out is Irish. Born in Dubbalin.

Though I suspect he might be about as Irish as the Duke of wellington who when asked about being Irish said that "Being born in a stable does not make one a horse".

Still, we'll take the blame for Aitken all the same.

I noticed that Brian when I was checking the dates. But I think we need to take the blame for him not you. He was definitely more forged by his experiences at Eton than his years in Dublin, which he probably doesn't even remember! He would fit in seamlessly with the current lot, I reckon and probably knew their fathers.

That one with Bord Failte made me laugh out loud!

Restrictions on all non-essential travel, the country desperate to have people holiday at home to help the economy and this cretin thought he'd get away with sneaking off to Italy for a bit of fun in the sun?
