He was on Nedem Onouha's podcast this week and actually came across as quite a decent bloke.
They discussed the relegation season under Hughes and reading between the lines it sounds like Mackie, Hill, Derry etc. were not blameless in the bad atmosphere. Without naming names he mentioned that there was quite a bit of jealousy floating around from some. Probably because Boswanka and co. refused to be on the bench though.
Also interesting to hear Nedem say that he reckons the most hated players were
1. Boswanka
2. Mbia
3. Hoilett
4. Him
I am not sure what you lot think but I reckon the chief is held in high regard by most. You cant play over 200 games for the club and not hold some standing. SWP, Julio Cesaer are a lot worse than JH & Nedem IMO.

Odious he may be but the simple fact is Barton was seriously good player. It baffles me how no one could see his ball retention, drive, touch, short passing, even vision were top notch. He played wonderful blind passes round the corner. Great in the tackle too.
The year we went up, he was the difference.
I love Clive's reports but his (often justified) rants about Barton's penchant for long passes or rubbish corners seems to have given all our fans the impression he wasn't a good overall player. He was a very good player. |  |

If I’d worked my ass off for a year, helped get my company become a decent business and then the management brought in people doing the same job as me, but were only there for the money, 5 times what I was earning and gave no shits about the company progressing, I’d be pissed off too. |  | | |

No one has actually answered the question - For me, The Chief was a really good guy and not a bad player - Hate is a strong word and I dont see how anyone could hate him. And whilst Hoillet was Marmite, he never gave up to win the ball to cross to Zamora so again the are far far worse than him too.

Derry was shifted out fairly quickly, closely followed by Mackie and Hill was made club captain and stopped complaining about his fellow players. This all seems to fit in what the dressing room was about in those days. The foreign factions created in the dressing room were a direct result of several of the older promotion team players making their feelings known in training. Bartons treatment of Zamora was nothing to be proud of in a human being either. Barton wasn't as good a player as he imagined himself to be and he had a habit of being a complete bully boy in the dressing room. For the sake of full disclosure, this information is second hand from one of the 1st team coaches at the time that I used to see and chat to at games. |  |

I heard second hand that Ned couldn’t stand Barton.
I liked Clint. We all did. But I do wonder about his close association with Barton.
Barton is a thunderc*nt of a person. He’s not misunderstood, unfairly treated or in any way a “thinker”. He’s BS merchant who could not back it up on the pitch. Christ, it was a running joke on here and in Clive’s report how bad his set pieces were and how many “Barton Balls” sailed into touch. He was a bang average footballer who played like he thought he was better than Beckham. He got way too generous a ride from fans. The singing of “one Joey Barton” upon his return to Marseille after slagging the club off and saying the Championship was beneath him was distinctly muggy behaviour from our fanbase. I refused to join in.

No-one apart from Marseille then, who quickly realised he was a bit of a cùnt.
The thing is, you'll wear players that are bombed out of other clubs because of their problems - and QPR do it most - if they produce on the pitch. Barton will be remembered more for gobbing off than for anything he actually did on the pitch.

A very interesting discussion. A few points I would raise.
I think Derry was well liked because he was Taarabt's fall guy in our promotion year. I think we all knew he was forced to bite his tongue and provide the shield in front of the back four (which he did superbly) while Taarabt worked his (selfish) magic further forward. He and Hill, were also the go to guys when the sh1t really hit the fan after being initially dropped for the mercenaries. I would be very interested to know what Taarabt's team -mates really thought of him. I would imagine he was a very 'difficult' colleague.
I think Hill also benefited from having Neilson ( a genuine good guy) beside him for six months as they were both perceived as 'stalwarts' in a sea of fickle mercenaries .
For me, Hoilett was quite the mercenary too. 'Disappearing' on the pitch for months on end, before revealing his obvious talents when his contract was due for renewal. Once safely in his back pocket, he became anonymous again.
Barton,like a lot of that team, banked huge credit for getting promoted. His refusal to play in the championship initially, plus all his many other faults were overlooked in the immediate aftermath. For me, his sending off against Man City summed him up perfectly. When you needed him most to stand up and be counted, he self-destructed and let the side down.
Boswanker was the ultimate mercenary and treated with the same disdain he treated the club with. But his behaviour was 'explained' by the fact that he was a foreigner. Which is what made SWP's decision to rot in the reserves and keep taking the money all the more galling. It just was not the British (or Irish) way. Hence, I personally despise him above all the rest. (Notwithstanding his winning goal V Chelsea)

I agree Nelson was on his last legs (literally), but that is kind of my point. The fans appreciated and admired the way he conducted himself and played despite being in obvious pain and, from the fans perspective, Hill benefitted by extension.
But you are quite right, if we had recruited properly then there would never have been the need to sign Nelson in the first place. | | | |
