Willock & Chair 12:56 - Nov 28 with 3815 viewsNorthantsHoop

Last night's result was disappointing, but the positives from last 3 games for me are; Willock is looking really good on left midfield, good on the ball, comes inside well and I think his inclusion has improved Chair's game as he can now focus on a more central attacking role. They are linking up well together. Been impressed with Willock's tracking back and supporting Niko as well. I think we have the makings of one hell of a player in Chris Willock, just need his fitness to get up to a 90 minute game.

Willock reminds me of Jerome Thomas. Both products of the Arsenal youth academy.

Not sure why Willock can’t complete a game though. We are two months down the line since he signed so can’t be a fitness thing.

For me on his performances, Willocks starts. As said, him and Chair are building up a good understanding of each others game.
If BOS is off, as i think he will be, would like us to look at Andre Green who is still a free agent.
The set up for the movement whereby Dykes is bundled over for what should of been a red card was a lovely move involving them both.

Smells like a trout farm in here

Yeh, good positive post.

Think the 3 begind Dykes are looking very good, just a shame we are likely to lose BOS and upset the balance, but theres always another player ready to step up 👌

No pre season. No real opportunity to do that core stamina work, as the games come thick and fast. Got to try and get fit by playing matches.

Definitely watching a different game than you, Northants, First half Willock was decent, as the whole team were. Only issue I had was he kept coming inside which narrowed the focus of our attack and at times made it quite congested with Dykes, Chair and especially if Carroll or Ball advanced. Compare that to Bright, who hugged the touchline, stretching the Brentford back-line leading to one goal and possibly another.
Second half Willock offered nothing and should have been subbed 10 minutes earlier. Someone said on the match thread that he lasted until the 70th minute which is a sign of improved fitness. He didn't. He was blowing out every available orifice from the hour mark, which I don't even get. It's not like he is going on lung busting runs every few minutes. He hit one tame cross onto the roof of the net, completely failed to track his man when he was dispossessed a few minutes later and gave away the free that led to the second goal due to a lazy/tired, unnecessary challenge.
I'm sure he will be a decent player for us going forward, and will have to step up when Bright leaves in Jan - but the man needs to get fit!

Agree with the bones of this. Willock has some promising makings but plenty to do to develop his game. Chair, I thought, grew nicely into the game during the first half, but also needs to be more consistent, influential, and improve his dead-ball technique, as others have pointed out, He's still young, however, and hopefully he will do so with us, as he's a talented player.

BOS's 'will-he-won't-he-yes-he-probably-will' departure in Jan. would/will be an absolute body-blow if it happens, as he's palpably the most dynamic and crucial part of our supply-line and contributes a goal or two as well. I fear we'll do our usual thing of trying to replace him on the cheap, and doubtless the club will sell under the odds and report it as 'undisclosed' so as to avoid transparency with the fanbase. Hope I'm wrong on one count or all.

This is a crucial season for Warburton and his coaching staff, as I'm sure he knows. There are definitely one or two positive signs, but the defensive issues have really not been addressed, our goalscoring unsurprisingly looks likely to be well down on last year, and we can't seem to string more than a couple of performances/results together right now for love or money. We're also likely to lose our flying winger in the January sales, while a fair number of the squad are either old or inadequate (Cameron, Wallace), already injured (Amos) or very much 'works in progress' (Chair, Willock, Kakay, Masterson, Hamalainen). We've had at best, good halves in games, and perhaps two or three decent full performances. However, we've already the worst defensive record in the league bar one (again), are topping the Champ charts for goals conceded from set-pieces (again) and our new shaven-headed international striker - from whom we have to hope and expect there'll be plenty more to come - has only scored one (excellent) goal from open play and seems to be playing as much for Sctoland as he is for us.

Thems the facts, and, as I say, I think our season could go one way or the other. I'm not expecting it to be desolate, but I do fear it's going to be bumpy, and my confidence in Warburton is qualified at best. But, hey, we're QPR right - so turbulence is pretty much our middle name.

God, you're a miserable so and so.

The number of young developing players is very encouraging. Of course you need to include a few older ones , like Cameron and Wallace, who will be retired in 2 years. The likely loss of BOS would be a blow but get some of those younger players with 50+ games under their belts and we will move forward.

Warburton did say in a recent interview (I don't have it to hand) that Willock has had problems in the past which is why he doesn't play the full 90 mins. He didn't go into details what the problem was.

Cowley seemed to really rate him at Huddersfield. But similarly talked about having to bring him up to match fitness gradually and work on aspects of his game.

I wonder Brian, would he be better off not starting until he is fully fit?Would coming on for the second half be more beneficial to him (and the team) if he played against defenders who are starting to tire? Have to say, although I admit I have seen very little of him, but haven't seen anything that Shodipo couldn't offer

Stainrod's a glass-half-full bloke alright but he's not unreasonable in that post.

I wouldn't be as downbeat about BoS leaving nor as grumpy about the club 's transfer policy, and I think there are good signs on the defence with the emergence of Dieng, Kakay and The Hemulen (the latter two not on anyone's radar much in August) and signing of Dickie. I'm also with you on young players.

But we're a curate's egg side now and there's nothing wrong with saying so.

Actually I agree with a lot of what he says too, although find it tiresome that he keeps repeating stuff sometimes that we all know. But it's the stuff about our season going one way or another that sticks in my craw. And the lack of nuance in his posts. Life is not all or nothing, execrable or superlative, winning or losing, promotion or relegation. Sometimes it's treading water, planning for the future, developing and building, drawing, staying mid-table. Not because that's what we want particularly but because it's all we can manage right now and because sometimes achieving what you ultimately want takes time, effort and patience.

He seems to think his anger shows his love for the club more than other people's balance and nuance. I disagree. We've tried to do the short cut buy-our-way-into-the-top-table and it nearly bankrupted us out of existence. I also felt disaffected from what this club was all about. We now seem much closer to our past of a club that is rooted in the community; has players that want to be here, probably BOS aside; which we develop and see blossom. Sometimes that means that we have to sell on. Like Brentford has. Like Southampton did. Like even Leicester has had to do. But we're doing it while investing in the next crop of young players. While putting money into infrastructure, like the training ground.

Some of the things he says seem just ridiculous, like expecting the manager to slag off the team we're playing next, in the guise of telling it how it is. There was nothing more motivating for me as a fan as when Jack Robinson did that about us, and it gets the crowd against you and I'm sure motivates the players to put in that extra ten per cent. Lose-lose. And I can understand why Warburton goes on about keyboard warriors because they can and do get managers the sack. Which of us has to experience that in our job? He might be a bit sensitive to criticism but I can see why.

Or expect Warburton to slag off our players after the match. He talks about Alex Ferguson but I can't remember him singling out individuals or even saying that the defence was crap. He was much cleverer than that. He'd blame everything else, the referees, not enough match time/too much match time, the other team's gamesmanship (while blatantly conducting his own). Tea cups used to fly, but behind closed doors. Players say how he taught them to appreciate all the back room team, the tea lady, the kitman, the academy coaches. He was the ultimate manager that would put his arm round the shoulder of the struggling player who needed it while blasting the Billy big bollocks who wasn't pulling his weight (but always behind the scenes). And most of all the club stuck by him when he didn't turn it round overnight and it was the stability that made them the success they became.

He can say what he wants, no one shuts him down, least of all Clive. But he can't expect that people won't disagree with him, challenge the negative bias, critique the name-calling (check out some of his past posts), get irritated with his not seeing what a club like ours is up against, show their frustration that he doesn't often see the bigger picture, criticise the fact we hear from him more when we lose than when we win. Just as people (rightly) critique my Pollyanna tendencies and my lack of (sometimes) missing technical points and understanding, and possibly my positive bias. And that's fine.

Just picking up on the 'undisclosed' anger many people have on this board (not singling you out SRE have seen it everywhere since the summer).

Why on earth would any privately owned business (football club or otherwise) willingly tell the public how much money they have received or spent on a *specific* asset? Individuals, like our ITK overlords, can go and trawl through financial statements to work it out if they so wish and all the best to those who have the stomach for that.

But the idea that a club *ought* to tell us exactly how much they have spent on one player is fanciful and, from the clubs perspective, is making your cards known. I'd rather be in the dark relying on journos (who are likely told fibs anyway) and have our rivals guessing whether we got 3, 4 or 5 mil for BOS/Freeman/Smithies etc

Quote: "doubtless the club will sell under the odds and report it as 'undisclosed' so as to avoid transparency with the fan base".

Out of interest, what figure are you judging whether it is "under the odds" considering he can sign a pre-contract deal to leave on a free at the end of the season? Any sort of fee would be a bonus if he is not going to sign.

Disappointing that it has come to this, but we cannot pay any sort of wage these days, and "Loyalty" won't keep these guys here. We know he can earn 2-3 times more elsewhere, so does he and most importantly so does his agent.

I think Willock has so much time on the ball, lovely touch, beautiful weight to his passing and superb vision. I think he has more talent than Chair and BOS, and his link-up play makes us so much stronger.

Not that Shodipo is poor at any of the above, more that Willock is exceptionally good at all of them, for this level at least. Shodipo's game, from what I've seen, is about pace, dribbling and wing-play.

Some interesting stuff in this post, I am very positive about how the club is progressing. I feel more attached to how we are developing and buying players, much more then when money was being wasted on players in the Premier phase in the last 10 years.
I think if we get Willock fully fit, he is going to be a real asset. I like Shopido, I remember him breaking through during pre-season 2016 and he had a great game at the Northampton Town friendly, but he has never really pushed on and looks a bit lightweight for the Championship at the moment. You look at BOS and how he has come on since joining in 2018, physically stronger, again this is how Eze improved, already had the game, but got stronger and bulked up a bit. I am hopeful, just watch Chair he is more confident now that left side is being strengthened with Willock and Niko.

Fair enough Brian. I hope he turns out as good as say he is, he will be a huge asset when BOS leaves. For me, of the little I've seen, he tends to drift inside too much, clogging things up around the edge of the box. I love Shodipo's direct style and think he terrifies defenders when in full flow. I guess I like my wingers on the wing, plus tracking back if they lose the ball.
