Aimless pissballing about sums up how slow Rangers are in getting the ball forward and breaking down teams without a decent midfield playmaker. It never ceases to amaze me how hard we have to work to get a goal, yet Derby with a couple of passes deep in their own half get a shot away and follow up with a simple tap in.

A bit harsh on the transfer window. They tried for Whiteman who looks a good player and what we need, if Preston hadn't made a move we'd have probably got him. Always think it's impossible to judge a transfer window until the next one starts, they can look good or terrible on paper but you never know how players will fit in and work out. Dom Ball a good example of one who looked a diabolical signing but has done really well whilst Sean Goss ticked all the boxes for young development potential etc and was shit.

I thought biggest issue yesterday was once again not freshening team up when we have a short gap between games. Ideal chance to give Bettache a start maybe Bonne in for Dykes or Austin but went unchanged again and they looked flat from the start. Really haven't managed the squad and the number of games well this season, I get it's difficult but it's something we could do a lot better.

Do agree that the games are all so tight though, these defeats could easily have been wins and the wins could have gone the other way as well. Really important we get the transfer business right this week, far more important to get the right players in than the date they are signed.

Dave B - "I thought biggest issue yesterday was once again not freshening team up when we have a short gap between games"

Think that's a sign of a manager under pressure. If he makes changes and we lose it's all on the manager. Why did he change a winning side etc.

yeah true, if he had left Austin or Dykes out yesterday and Derby score early he would be slated, we saw that a lot in the last few months of Holloway but think we need to be a bit better at rotating the squad

Our recruiting seems very lazy and poor.
Our squad has no depth to it hence reluctance to change team and freshen things up.
We should move on players that are not good enough and get decent wing backs and central midfielders in.

Also with the goal on Saturday someone needed to do a tactical foul to stop the breakaway.

That's very harsh. Lazy and poor suggest they just can't be bothered. Actually I think they've been working their arses off to try and keep this club sustainable with a future and improve it incrementally on and off the pitch. We've lost so much out of the squad in the last three years. If you put back in Luongo, Furlong, Bidwell, Wells, Hughill, Eze, Robinson and BOS, most scouted by this regime, then we look a different prospect. Most of those we needed to get rid of to keep us in business, because of failures by the old guard, which allowed Fernandes to nearly make us bankrupt.

We're still suffering from that in our recruitment. How many players have gone to our rivals recently because they pay a bit better. That's not down to laziness but economic reality. I don't want to get relegated but I also don't want to go down the route of selling the ground to your chairman and hoping for the best. How many clubs keep spinning THAT dice. Derby, who've done that, are still not yet promoted or even in the play offs. Their midfielder on Saturday cost £8 million. That's what we've spent on probably half our first team.

On top of past mistakes we've also had to pay off the fine which we're going to be doing for a while and we've had a global pandemic which means that the club has literally no income apart from TV. This must have blown apart their spending plans. People still don't want to pay their tenner for the match but get a free stream. Fair enough, they might be financially challenged themselves. But they can't then complain that the owners, who are subsidising the club by a million a month at least, aren't putting their hands in their pockets.

Around us Nottingham Forest, Derby, Cardiff and Birmingham have all spent big over the last couple of years and aren't massively better than us. They are inconsistent like we are inconsistent. The wily old fox Neil Warnock, said yesterday that when you've got young players they're inconsistent.

Other clubs that have been doing this for a while are probably doing it a bit better than us: Luton, Preston, Barnsley etc. But they've had a more settled squad, which we desperately need. If we can stay up, which we've got a decent chance of doing, we could look much better with a few key additions and more experience in this division across the team. Personally I'd rather stick to this strategy than tear it up again for one that might put us out of business permanently.

Nix you make some very good points.

I just think with our signings we go for the obvious such as Stefan Johansen.
However from some accounts on here his legs have gone.
Is he really the right option?

In my humble opinion we need a quality young central midfielder who can cover box to box.
This is what we should be moving heaven and earth to find.

Also we need full backs / wing backs that can cross (like Manning could)

Just frustrated - probably due to the 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) here today in Australia
Too hot for me.

Absolutely. We seemed to find out Austin was available only because TF has him on Twitter, the subs bench is an embarrassment to Championship football, we are getting beaten to signings by Preston, think about that for a minute, Preston. And whoever thought it was a good idea to tie two rookie full backs to 4 year contracts should be interrogated secured to a chair with Stealers Wheel playing in the background.

I agree it's not ideal. But we do need experience too. Some Fulham fans think Johansen could do us a job. We need experience as well as energy. No point in getting a young player who's naive. We've got those already. And only the top prospects hit the ground running at a young age. For instance, Johansen would undoubtedly have committed a foul to stop that Derby goal further up the pitch. Not pretty but what Preston, Millwall and most teams would also have done. I also think we've missed Rangel's know-how this season.

We've made lots of mistakes and we're still making them, but I also do think it's an incredibly tough market out there.

Hope it cools down soon! We could do with some sunshine.

The club are on a hiding to nothing with regards to the length of contracts handed out. If they give a short deal and the player comes good he ends up going for peanuts or nothing at all. If they get long deals and it doesn't work out then they get slated for handing out a long deal.

Well that would be fair comment except both had been at the club for a very long time, loaned out with very limited success or not played by a succession of managers, yet when we run out of competent full backs, they get a couple of first team games and find themselves on 4 year contracts, it’s crazy.

Also, we have a DOF, manager and coaching staff who are paid to spot that stuff, to realise who the ones are worth long term contracts.

But as we saw with BOS and Manning do the DoF and board overrule the manager. Both were loaned out or not included in the team. If the manager isn't going to play them do they get longer contracts.
Not arguing with about these particular contracts but it does seem that we are doing the DoF as a half measure. It still seems the manager is the manager and not a head coach as the European clubs tend to do.

Of course if we hadn't offered them deals and they had come in and done well, as Deing has, the club would be slated for not tying down young players to longer deals

I agree. From what we've heard the two full-backs are on very low basic pay. Makes sense to tie them up as we need squad players too. I don't see the issue here at all. The issue is that our two first choice full backs haven't been consistently good and/or available.

Bonne's goal v Luton was similar to be fair - but you're right, those 'quick' goals do seem to be few and far between - in fact ANY goals come to that!

People can moan about our recruitment all they like but we now have one of the lowest budgets in the Championship. Hence we lose Manning on the cheap, can't offer a deal to BOS and miss out on players like Hugill, Whiteman and Alfie Doughty because we cannot/will not match what they can get elsewhere.
It's a bit like advertising. 50% of what you spend will be wasted. The trouble is knowing which 50%. We've not done that badly in terms of recruitment but there's bound to be failures even with the most comprehensive scouting system. Would you rather have Rob Dickie than the guy who went to Brentford (forgotten name)? How many thought Carroll and Amos would be so important to us and how much we'd miss them when injured?

Warbs keeps saying "fine margins" and he's right. If we stay up, and I think we will, we should be better next season for the time given to Dieng, Kakay, Niko, Chair, Bonne and Dykes.

Excellent post Derbyhoop. I'd add Willock to that list too. I think he's got a lot of potential but is still pretty raw.

Agree - There's a bloke down the road who has wasted a lot more than 50% of his first window and just got the sack because of it!

AND his window cost his club north of £200 million PLUS wages!
