I'm not aware of anything in the 'Laws of the game' that says a free kick shouldn't be taken until the keeper has finished organising his defence. IMHO, the keeper should be aware that the kick can be taken at any time.

It happened to me in my latter Sunday league days.I was setting the wall and the opposition player took a quick free kick and scored.I had the usual moan at the ref but he said that they asked to take a quick free kick and he said yes.I don’t remember whether he blew his whistle or not,but I think it was only 1 of the 7 goals I let in that morning.

You can't stop the game because you have made a mistake!
It is one of my pet hates that referees stop teams taking a quick free kick. It is not the job of an official to allow the defence to organise. It is their job to allow the team that have the free kick to take maximum advantage of the situation.
Most of the times they insist on marking out ten yards (or the metre equivalent) is because they personally want a rest!
In this instance, Mason took it upon himself to ignore the laws of the game & whistle when no offence has taken place.
He should be facing a charge of bringing the game & match officials into disrepute! | | | |

I don't mind either way, as long as they're consistent. Tbh they do give time for the other team to get the wall in place. If that's the convention, they can't suddenly decide to allow them to do a quick free kick in a position where they'd normally expect to have a whistle. The whole charade epitomized how utterly stupid the game has become.
In the 70's, quick free kicks were an art (R's were brilliant at it) and teams had to be on their toes. Now the ref stops the game walks out 10yrds and all of this takes ages.
Referee's and officials have become front and centre of the game - why? Rules have changed but we cannot interview a ref after a game and ask them why they have made "nutcase" decisions.
VAR is a fecking mess and killing the game and shithousery is rife in the game with teams and individual players allowed to kill a game for gain.
I struggle to watch any PL game because it is so sanitized. It's just not "proper" football anymore. |  | | |
