No England cap for Charlie 15:50 - Mar 29 with 1706 viewsMyke

I've mentioned this elsewhere since he re-joined us, but I see there is a piece about it in the Mirror. When Charlie got called for the end of season games , I couldn't figure why he didn't get some game time especially in the friendly against us. As he said, Vardy was called up too, got game time and has done brilliantly since. When he stayed with us for the first half of the following campaign, I can see why he would not have got picked, but at that time he was the top English goalscorer in the prem with 18 goals ( and 2 missed pens) in a team that was basically sh1te. I was very disappointed he didn't play against Ireland. clearly he was too.

He was never going to be a regular but one cap, just one bloody cap, would have been great considering he was, as said, England's top scorer in the PL at the time.

I'm sure some will cite it was because he was 'only' at QPR but then why get called up..... then not give him some game time even in a friendly where there are about 20 subs used.

I seem to recall Theo Walcott came on as sub, just why, what was the manager going to learn about Walcott that he didn’t already know ffs

Poll: Who’s better?

Well, I expect the England manager to be developing a squad of players for the long-term so TBH if some player for another club was thrown a single cap and then never played again I'd be unimpressed.

But I agree with Myke, I don't see the logic of him never having been a serious contender anyway since he was scoring goals in a terrible, terrible team. I think he'd have offered more variety compared to Kane than Vardy.

This may be hooped-spectacles syndrome but I've always been convinced that QPR contenders for England have never been given a fair shake of the stick with sole exception of Gerry Francis.

Even Francis only won 12

Would have definitely had a stack more caps but for the injury he picked up playing for England in a WC qualifier in 1976. The injury kept him out for the best part of two years and by the time he was fully fit again he'd missed the boat regards England, Greenwood had come in and despite being only 26/27 was probably seen as yesterday's man.

Poll: Which is the worst QPR team?

What a shame.

Only QPR could have Marsh, Bowles, Francis, Parkes and Thomas within a decade and get less than 40 caps.

Yeah, obviously it was tragic he didn't play more but I don't think I can blame the England set-up for that: IMO not only would he have been a regular but the World Cup qualification campaign wouldn't have been a shambles and we'd have gone to Argentina and so there'd have been more caps on offer (though not sure how far we'd have gone, can't see that team troubling the Dutch or Argentines even with Gerry in the side)

I think part of that "yesterday's man" thing was that after the Revie scandal and failure to qualify people wanted a bit of a clear-out. Greenwood did get a bit of optimism back for England with Brooking and Keegan.

I had a great chat with GF once about it and he blames it on his back injury, which really ruined him. Might've been England captain for years otherwise.

Bare bones.

Sinclair was another one who really should have had a lot more caps than he did, and have broken through much earlier. Bizarre that he ended up getting his one run in the team as a stand in for the third rate Danny Murphy at the '02 World Cup, a good six years after his proper heyday.

Given it's half past midnight I won't even get into Clive Wilson never being capped. (Tony f****** Dorigo, I mean seriously...)

Jay Bothroyd has more caps than Chaz.

If Charlie isn't cheesed off about England selection, he should be.

He was MOM in that 1-0 Argentina game if I remember rightly.

Bardsley and Wilson... it was just criminal.

Wasnt Hodgson manager at that time?

I remember him getting called up (Charlie) but I thought he picked up an injury?

Was he on the bench?

Agree it's a shame he didn't get a cap, but depsite all that experience in UK and abroad and as a relatively successful International Manager, Hodgson was dire.

Ironic that Zaha a player he now relies so much on ended up playing for another country due to his (Woy's) stupidity.

Hodgson should have gone staright after Euro 2012 where he did ok as a stop gap but afterwards and especially after 2014 WC embarrassment.

I know there's a lot more around now but really they had enough to be a bit better than that.
