Hope he can stay fit this time. Fully fit he was starting to look very good.

His physical fitness was never in doubt last season (oops I mean the season before last) but his psychological fitness certainly appeared to be. In the early games this season (grr last season) the indications were that he was finally getting back to the player the Spurs fans rated so highly. So the big question is... if one ACL preyed on his mind for a whole season, what (if any) will the second one do to his mental state. Could go two ways, he might never reach his potential and send up a L1 player or he might think ' feck it, the worst has happened, I might as well just go for it

I see Lee Hoos wants to introduce safe standing. How about some safe seating? 50 odd years in SAR, my knees are wrecked.

It's a good point. My knees were also wrecked in those seats and I am 5 foot 9. I have a friend who has looked at the ground and she reckons with some redesign it could hold around 20,000. bout 1500 more than now. She is a stadium and events architect and thinks it could be changed around quite easily with a combination of safe standing and better seating planning. She also said if the roof was replaced that there would be room to do more in the stadium in terms of space and losing the stanchions. She's been involved in some of the new build football stadiums around Europe. Back on point Amos appears to be a lot further along in his return than expected.

Agreed, the psychological element might be a factor for a while.

Full recovery rate from ACL's - defined as returning to the same level of sport and the same level of performance - is now over 80%, though. I did a lot of research on this over the weekend as one of my GAA players had the misfortune to pick up a second ACL tear, and medical treatment continues to evolve at an impressive rate.

Even so, I think it would be understandable if Amos was tentative for a while.

Hopefully he can become part of the squad again. Although I cant see how he fits into the starting team right now... others played well enough last year to go above him in the pecking order. I hope he uses that as a motivation though.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

Market those in blue and white "hoops" with the club crest on and it's a money spinner for the club shop. I'll accept 5% commission.

Agreed, Brian, this '80% full recovery rate' refers to physical recovery. This is not surprising considering the ever improving medical science and technology available. But the psychological recovery is impossible to accurately calculate, as no two people react to
the same adversity in the same way. I think Gazza is right, unless you go through it yourself, it is impossible to say how it will affect you afterwards

Correct, it's unknowable. So maybe let's just allow for a degree of patience and not make speculative assumptions about what has "preyed on his mind" historically (and linking it to indifferent form) or claim that he'll be playing in a state of fear from now on.

Hope he comes good (although I have my doubts) but it all depends how he's used. Think he's much more effective further forward than as a defensive midfielder, but in that case he'll be behind Willock and Chair in the pecking order.

It was so massively frustrating to see it finally click on the pitch for him immediately before the injury.

He'd had decent games up till then, some of which fell under the 'lots of unsung good work' category I thought. But right before he pranged it he was suddenly playing a couple of gears higher. Devastating.

At least he'll be coming into a team where he's not expected to drag us up from the relegation spots etc. Having Willock and co around him will be a good thing I think.

I'm really intrigued to see what happens with Amos now. Not so much his injury and recovery, although that's obviously part of it, but were he fits in this new look team...

I mentioned before but IMO he was bought specifically to be that pressing 10 that Warburton really liked in our old way of playing, to win the ball back in the opposition half with his energy and tactical awareness. Now we play with 2 up front or Chair/Willock types supporting a front man, where does he go? Does he have the physicality/composure under pressure to sit deep and break up play or recycle possesion? Does he have the creative ability to play incisive passes forward?

He's not like Field, he's not like Chair or Willock and he's not a Johansen (although not many are, granted). So to me he's got to compete with Thomas as a kind of support / number 8 player to take advantage of tired teams later in games. At the moment he isn't getting into this 11, even fully fit, and others are ahead of him. Like I say I'm interested to see what happens and how we use him next season.

EDIT: Oh and I should add - great to see him back. Horrific luck so far and I really hope this latest injury is his last!

Johansen apart, as it's uncertain he'll return, which two CMs would you pick?

Hmmm, it's a really tough call from the group we have, but Field and 1 other would be my choice as it stands. Depending on his recovery I'd maybe have Carroll. I know he's not liked by some others but I think his skillset is a Johansen-lite. Left footed, tidy in possession, lots of Championship experience, etc.

Maybe we could have just Field and then Chair Willock Dykes and Austin (if he signs) ahead. We did that system/formation towards the end of the season and it didn't seem unbalanced, but I think it's a lot to ask. Whatever we choose it's a massive downgrade though - Stef is that good.

Totally agree with this - it was only in his last couple of games before injury that the light finally dawned on what a good player he could be: an aggressive, fast, Duracell bunny causing havoc, pressing high and creating chances. And then he got injured.

I too don't see how that type of player fits in at the moment, but then again it does mean we've got options to change it up in games now, as we haven't had an Amos equivalent since his injury. He definitely isn't a Johansen replacement, he was totally anonymous there for tons of games.

Fingers crossed for him, seems a nice lad and he still hasn't had a chance to shine.

Yep, I'd agree a Field/Carroll pairing could be the best selection. I thought Carroll did his best work for us as a deeper lying playmaker and on his day he is a very good passer of the ball.

An unusual thing about our CMs is they're all left footed apart from Ball.

If we can't retain Johansen the club might just look to recruit a replacement, but if it were Dozzell that would seem a bit unfair on Bettache who is only a year younger, but I suppose he hasn't played the number of first team games Dozzell has.

Minor point but I'm not sure he was bought specifically to play that niche 10 role. MW always played up his game as an all-round athletic 8 who could pick a pass.

He played the majority of the first season alongside Cameron or Ball, behind Eze, Bright, Chair and Pugh in the 4-2-3-1. Then Eze's absence and Carroll's introduction led to trying him out further forward, though even then Carroll was still occasionally the one further forward. Bournemouth was the eye-opener.

I agree the 10 role isn't quite there for him now as it was last season, due to competition and change(s) of formation. Trying again with him as an 8 would appear to make most sense currently in Johansen's absence, but as I've mentioned before if that was the long term plan for next season then I don't think they'd have been looking to invest a decent sum in Whiteman ahead of his contract expiring.

MW still seems mad keen on him in those recent quotes though.
