I don’t get the Southgate hostility.

When Capello and Erikson were handing out Caps like Smarties, the media were on their backs. Now it seems to be the same when we have a stable a consistent team.

Sorry to hark on about the past, but he is one of two living managers who has got us to a tournament semi. It think he’s earned his chance for some freedom.

Sweden and Colombia were both decent teams, and arguably better than we made them either of them look. We've also beaten Spain, Holland and Belgium outside the World Cup.

I agree that Southgate's not had a really defining tournament victory against a major footballing nation, but then how many England managers have? Maybe Eriksonn beating Argentina in the group stages in 2002 or Keegan beating Germany in 2000? For me, Southgate's done better with the one competition he's been in charge for than all of his predecessors back to 1996 put together.

With Kane, I agree that resting him would seem like the smarter option, but we're obviously not privy to all the information Southgate and his team have - maybe there's some tactical stuff they want to try out, maybe Kane's not quite where he needs to be in terms of sharpness. Southgate - like Warburton - is not someone who just does stuff for the sake of it. If Kane plays, it'll be because there's a specific reason behind it.

I dont see the problem, pick our best team available and hope he gets among the goals, build some momentum for the tournament. He could get injured today, he could get injured 5 minutes into the Croatia game or he could be on the pitch after scoring the winning goal in the final. I imagine the medical team are better placed to know.

I'm convinced Southgate suffers the same fate as Warburton in that since neither come across as traditional old-school Sgt Major types, they must somehow be weak or yes men or not be able to grind out results.

We could well win the group but then we could get Germany & France in the next round and our midfield isn’t good enough to beat both of those teams

Sorry I know this isn't really the question or the point of the thread but on the Southgate hostility, I'll say the same thing I say everytime there are murmurs about the QPR manager changing. So you've sacked him, great, now what? Who would be in for the job, and who would realistically want it and take it? If they can get Guardiola, brilliant, let's go do that, but the England manager before Southgate was Sam fcking Allardyce. If Southgate was sacked today, who do we think would be the dozen or so names in the frame? Would they realistically do better than he has? You'd probably find people like Chris Wilder and Dean Smith kicking around at 14/1 for it, Eddie Howe would be shorter than that.

Ok then no we haven’t if your including the tournaments
But we have had some real dross managing us in recent years
Hodgson , Mclaren, Capello were utterly dreadful especially Hodgson that World Cup in 2014 was nothing more than a disgrace and boring Euros of 2012 & 16
We have the players now apart from centre midfield I just hope we have a go this year rather than being cautious
