I hope your Dad's comfortable, and I'm sure it's a huge comfort for him that you're there with him towards the end. Impossibly sad, and perhaps not much consolation at the moment, but I guess you're fortunate to have had him in your life for so long. 95 is a great age. Take care of yourself. |  |

I remember being pleasantly surprised / delighted, when I reached 50 and both my and my wife's parents were all alive and active, it was really great for my kids and the other siblings children. They're all gone now but fair innings all round, very fortunate. |  |

I feel for you, was told back in November my Dad (87) wouldn’t last 48 hours, two weeks later with all his children around his bed and holding his hand( he was in a hospice) he finally succumbed.

Sorry to hear that news mate.As others have said,take comfort in the fact that you will be there for each other when the time comes.I was lucky enough to be there for my dads last few hours in 1994.Unfortunately I wasn’t there for when my mum passed away,but I had to tell the paramedics by phone to not attempt to resuscitate her as it wasn’t what she wanted,but I think she didn’t want to die alone either.
Enjoy the last few days with your dad chatting about all the things you ever wanted to chat about but never got around to saying.We should all be surrounded by our families in our last moments,but it isn’t always possible.

This is so true. My father died in March 2014, but for most of the previous year he didn't know anyone. He was confused and afraid and it was difficult to watch. I sat with him for several hours a day, usually listening to is nonsensical giving out about imaginary things that were annoying him.
He was a huge Manchester United fan having lived ( and help rebuild) Manchester post WW11. He was either in OT (or Maine Road after OT was damaged) fort-nightly for the next decade or so. I grew up in an isolated farmhouse in the west of Ireland, in the sixties and Law, Charlton, Best et al were discussed around the table just as much as my family members and neighbours.
Anyway, as I say, little or not recognition or acknowledgement of my presence (or anyone else's) at his bedside throughout 2013. I mentioned in July that Jack Crompton had passed away. My father stopped complaining immediately, a look of lucidity came into his eyes for the first time in months . He made a clawing motion with his hands, 'like a cat', he said, 'like a cat'. He then lay back and fell asleep, with a slight smile on his face. The next day, it was back to the same old rants, but for those few beautiful moments, I had my dad back. So Brian is dead right, every bit of chat is precious.
It sounds like you have had a long and wonderful relationship with your father. This will of course, make the end even harder as we mourn most deeply the ones we love the most, and age is irrelevant. But when all this has passed and you have time to take stock, all these years together will be what will keep you going. I hope you treasure every moment left and then when the time comes your dad slips away peacefully and painlessly. | | | |

My dad went into a care home yesterday .
An angry man now but once full of life.
His wife my mum passed last year.
Start to feel less immortal ourselves when parents go to the big football stadium in the sky.
My dad took me first rangers game in 1980.
He was more a rugby man coming from the valleys himself but we have both had passions for many sports and he been a good mate way back when.
I kinda lost my old man already ie he confused and angry. Our family pretty divided but yes treasure the good times.

In no way do I wish to belittle your sadness, but I envy you. I have no fond memories of my Dad. In fact I hated him from the time I was old enough to form an opinion. When I was 10 years old, he set me up with the kiddie fiddler a few doors down. I spent the rest of his life wishing him dead. I'm 69 now and only recently have I started working out his reasons for doing what he did. He ruined my life, plain and simple.
So treasure your remaining time together. You are very lucky.
