Another of the boys from '66 gone. Was too young to have seen him in his pomp but a fantastic goal scorer.

Love Jim. Answered my dumb letter to him in Shoot! Never seemed bitter about what was a once-in-a-lifetime disappointment and seemed like a lovely bloke. Too young to see him play but was obviously one of the greatest strikers ever; his record is incredible.

I saw Jimmy play many times for Spurs and England, worth the entrance fee on his own.

A real legend, a great documentary about him on BT last year which is well worth a watch and shows what an incredible player he was

For me i grew up watching him every Saturday, Saint and Greavsie was a brilliant show and he was the star of it, always funny never taking himself or the game too seriously. Should have been given a knighthood years ago but too late now

RIP Jimmy. In my opinion, England’s greatest ever goalscorer. Superb talent and a personal shame for him that he missed out on the final but his replacement was not too shabby. That documentary was excellent.

Too young to have seen him play, but when I was growing up in the 70’s and 80’s he was the benchmark for naturally gifted finishers. I think he still probably is to this day.

I am sure the BT doc will get some more airtime (hopefully on free-to-air) as it was very good.

Has been very unwell since his stroke in 2015 but this is a sad loss all the same. Wonderful player from the clips that I have seen.

RIP. As a kid growing up in the sixties he (almost) persuaded me to follow Spurs, luckily I stuck with the R’s and was privileged to see him play at LR.

Unfortunately he blotted his copybook that day by scoring a “hand of God” goal at the loft end and as an naive 11 year old I was devastated that a “hero” could be such a cheat!

Never mind a knighthood, he was disgracefully only given an MBE in this year's new year's honours alongside Ron Flowers, another 1966 squad member. They were the last of the World Cup winning squad to receive an honour. They should have got them at the same time as the eleven non playing members got their winner's medals in 2009.

A deadly striker and should never have been dropped for the WC final irrespective of how it turned out. He only scored 1 goal against us and it was punched in as he didn't quite reach it with his head. I couldn't tell you the final score, or even the year (possibly 68-69 season) but I was livid as it happened right in front of me. He undeservedly became a bit of a joke figure after his retirement but any of us who saw him play know what a goal machine he was in the 18yd box.
Edit. * I slightly misremembered the actual sequence of events...
"Jimmy Greaves/Sunday People
- "....While I'm in a confessional mood, I can remember punching the ball to control it at Loftus Road and wellying the ball past the QPR keeper."
-So, when Diego Maradona scored his Hand of God goal, I couldn't feel too indignant
-The only difference was one happened in a World Cup quarter-final in the Azteca Stadium with the eyes of the world upon it, and the other on a foggy day at Loftus Road, when you couldn't see further than 50 yards." "

A great striker whom I saw score against us twice, once at home (hmm?) and at White Hart Lane.

RIP Greavsie.

I was at Fulham v Spurs .Fulham won 4-1. But the abiding memory was Jimmy receiving the ball on halfway gliding passed 4 Fulham players and passing it into the net. FANTASTIC

Greaves was ahead of his time in the way he played the game. His vision, movement and finishing would not look out of place today. And he displayed his silky skills on pitches that were often quagmires rather than the immaculate surfaces of today.

A truly sublime player.

Great player I remember him down at Loftus Rd playing for Spurs he went up for a header missed it and punched it in, wheeled away his hand in the air claiming a goal and the Ref gave it the only one on the pitch who didn't see the punch
