Love to see a player of Shaun Derry's ilk in our midfield next season.
Pretty certain he wouldn't have stood for the shambolic display in the second half.
Completely over ran. Dozzel and Amos out muscled for pretty much every minute of the second half.
Stef was anonymous again which is sad to see after his first season with us.
I should imagine we will see lots of changes next season but a no nonsense ball breaker should be top of our list.

Yes and no...

Yes he did a great job for us but he is extremely boring player to watch to be honest. He was average most of his career but stood out with us because he had faurlin and taarabt next to him

Give me a new faurlin any day! That's what we pay money to see!

Unfortunately you need a few Derry type players to get out of the Championship. You say he had Taarabt and Faulkner which of course is true but I would argue that Taarabt and Faulkner had Shaun Derry and I might add Clint Hill.

I actually think Sam Field has a lot of Shaun Derry and traits and he and Jimmy Dunne are the two players that there should be no question marks over for next season. Last night both were easily our best players and didn't deserve to be on the losing side - its all the other players that need replacing.

We also need a manager like Warnock who wouldn't tolerate a performance like last night. I think Dyche is a pipe dream but I wouldn't want to be a player coming off to face him after that.

How old was Derry when he joined us? Comparing him to that waste of space Johansen seems unfair; I don't think he made a tackle last night. Quite how he stayed on for the full 90 minutes is beyond me.

I agree that Sam Field may be a Derry type player for us. It's the Clint Hill player we are missing.

I agree that Dunne looks very good and if Barbet and Wallace go he should be captain next season. I have high hopes for Amos as I think he is a player. If Dickie doesn't leave next season I would consider moving him forward into the Declan Rice type position in deep midfield. I love him but honestly think he is too slow as a CB. As a deep sitting midfielder who runs forward he could be very effective, I feel.

Never knowingly right.

Field - always beaten in the air at set-pieces, always passes backwards and very one-footed - notably yesterday when his refusal to use his right foot saw him hook what should have been a simple clearance upfield for a corner.
That's not to say he doesn't have a lot of very good points, but let's not ignore the bad. It is also since he came into the centre of midfield this year that our form went through the floor, which for me, indicated that him playing so deep upset the balance of the side.

I'd prefer a clone of Faurlin, we have Field to play the defensive midfielder role well. A player like Faurlin who could play but was also tough and able to defend would be ideal right now.

I think the days of Derry types are long gone in the championship.
We need speed ,power, athleticism, good touch on the ball, awareness. We are sadly lacking this in all departments on the pitch atm.
We lost 1-3 at home last night to a team that displays those attributes. Look at the top 6 teams and in my uneducated mind from the games I've seen they don't rely on a Derry type player. Let's face it Johansen and Hendricks were suppose to be our wiley old midfield generals but bar Chair(who I thought was quite static last night) don't have the players around them.
I'm probably sounding harsh on the team but you could see why Sheffield utd were in top six and we're bumbling around midtable.
I know they had it all to play for and we didn't and I suppose you have to factor that into the display but to me it's been like this for a lot of the games this season.

A lot of credit for the way yesterday went was down to the performance of Sander Berge for the Blades. He is more the midfielder I would like to see play for us. He totally dominated the midfield and created so many of their opportunities. You could see why they broke their transfer fee record for him.

The grass is always greener.

he passes backwards because he has the first touch of a sunday league player, so by the time he gets it under control the only thing he can (rightly by then) do is play safe and go backwards. SJ best position is in that deep role he was moved out of to accommodate field. SJ would drop deep to collect the ball and we would then start to play through the lines with slick football. We can't do that with Field because he can't be trusted to control a football first time. Don't get me wrong, if you want somebody to cover lots of ground, put their body on the line etc etc he's as good as anybody in the league, I truly feel that, but what you gain with one hand you lose with the other, and slick football is the looser. Not here to slag off any of our players, because I love them all along with our now departing manager, but he really needs to work on the basics. Having gangly legs probably doesn't help this either. Not many gangly lovely footballers out there

We cannot pay record transfer fees until we get into the Premier League and we cannot get into the Premier league unless we pay record transfer fees to get quality players. It’s the vicious circle created by FFP or whatever it’s called now.

ive been saying this for years like a broken record but i simply would not sign a player unless they achieved a set level of competency with both feet. same with training our youth, you dont progress unless you can control and pass a ball to a level with both feet

I don't agree with that. I think Field is quite deft with his feet. He and Dozzell don't lose it too much when they are in possession. Its Amos and Johanssen who are more wasteful. But that's just my opinion. I may be wrong.

Clone Shaun Derry. on 12:06 - Apr 30 with 1170 viewsbaz_qpr

Dont think Field or Johanson are the problem in the medium term, and Field is young and an asset though 2nd half last night cried out for a Dom Ball, just to shore up set pieces and adda physical presence. I like Amos because he can score a goal or too from midfield, and I think Dozzell is talented in some respects, but has some terrible habits, which mean he will never progress from being L1 standard.

Our problems this year IMHO has been

a) Bringing Sanderson in who has not had a single decent game
b) Lack of pace at the back
c) Lack of pace / dynamism further forward
d) Losing Dieng a keeper who commands his box
e) Defending set pieces again (see also d)
f) Injuries not just players we've lost but the players carrying them and playing

Hmm not sure about that reading of our form - one of our best runs was him, Amos and Stef in midfield when Chair was at AFCON

It’s not so much about Derry’s footballing ability although he was a far better player than many gave him credit for, it is about his leadership skills along with Clint Hill. They were two leaders who really galvanized the team. This is what we so badly lack at this moment. SJ, I’ve said for a long time reminds me of Barton, thinking he is better than he is and he is certainly not a leader in my book. Wallace was the only player who would have got near to the leadership of Derry and Hill but with his injury record you couldn’t afford to have him as a captain. For me the first signing we need pre-season is a real leader of men.

Your right to a degree about about Stef. He stacked up the bookings in his pomp Mainly due his work rate. Way off the pace now. Sadly!

You are totally right in your summary, we have to find a way to improve recruitment and still operate within a smaller budget. If Luton and Millwall can do it and are pushing on, surely Rangers can get there.
