Yoof v Experience 10:34 - Jun 11 with 1075 viewsdavman

Looking at last season's LfW ratings, it is interesting to see how the highest rated ones were the youngsters at the club (Willock, Dieng, Dunne, etc.). Aside from Archer (see, he can't really be as bad as you think, Clive ), Barbet is the highest "senior" player, in 11th, then Albert in 14th although that was swayed by a pretty impressive run of games in the run up to Xmas.

Yet, Warburton clearly felt that experience was the way. Look at Charlie, Stef, Hendrick, Wallace, Andre Gray - all pretty poor over the season.

So, is concentrating on kids such a bad thing?

I know that the stock answer will be "it depends how good the kids are", which is right, but do we believe Hansen's famous quote of "you never win anything with kids"?

Can we go out yet?
Poll: What would you take for Willock if a bid comes this month?

See what you mean (although Dieng is older than you think so not sure we can class him as a youngster!)...

...but on the flip side do you think psychologically we go easier on the youngsters because we expect less from them (and so give them better scores accordingly) and are harsher on the "experienced" pros because we expect good performances as a given (and thus score harshly if we judge them as not being good)?

Gray has impressive stats, but as we know from watching him live, he's not really a great team player and has no BOS pace.

To me it shows that he's not super fit as he seems to have the intention to play with the team, just his body cannot hack it. If he was say super-fit Gray could be a proper Prem player, which is probably why we were able to get him on loan.

I prefer youth myself, with a small touch of experience in players like JoJo and Uncle. Barbs as we know was great at the back. I don't think we need any more than that in the squad with at least 2 experienced players in the side at all times.

We don't win anything anyway so, we might as well never win anything with Kids.
Play the Yoof!

Even Dunne and Willock are mid twenties and not exactly 'Youth'. Your looking more at the likes of Bettache, Kelman and Owens.

That's the first thing sprung to my mind - Charlie, Stef, Gray and Albert are all players who we probably expect to be able to perform consistently at this level, and when they don't we're more likely to be critical of application, fitness etc. Not always that simple of course but that's the gut instinct.

Whereas Willock went from a player we had hopes for to a player who would frequently blow our minds. Dunne probably had a better season than expected too, and one or two others.

Love a bit of experience at centre back (hill, r.dunne, Nelsen) or up top leading the line like a Zamora or furlong. Where you don't want that experience is at wingback and centre mid where we had stef, unz and Wallace and you need bundles of energy in the modern game. Also depends on the player and how they've looked after themselves. A 36 year old Paul furlong looked fitter than a 31 Charlie Austin.

The blend of both is the ideal. 'Never win anything with kids', actually means never win anything with JUST kids. I think we all agree that a fully fit Wallace/Chaz/ Steph greatly improved our team that contained Chair/Willock/Dickie/ Field. The problem with the 'oldies' is that when they are not fully on it, or beset by niggling injuries (which take longer to heal when you get older,) they cannot use their energy, speed (?) or athleticism to compensate for being off form. As a result this lack of form is more glaringly obvious and potentially more hazardous to the team in older players than kids. But I think any successful team needs to have a blend of both.
Btw Dieng is just a pup in goalkeeping terms but from an age and experience perspective
