Cumbrians to be outfoxed by the Super U's at JSCS 22:49 - Aug 5 with 2070 viewsdurham_exile

Following last week’s narrow defeat at Sixfields, Brown, Dunne and Huzzey (that famous sporting trio) bring their charges back to the JSCS for a home match against the Cumbrians led by Paul Simpson.

Without dwelling too long on last week’s game, we were unfortunate to lose in what was a keenly contested game.

Now in the week when we celebrated 14 years at the JSCS (forget about the Athletic Bilbao game on August 4th 2008, I was present for the Huddersfield Town game, an eminently forgettable bore draw). That in a nutshell sums up our tenure at the new stadium. Yes there have been some memorable games (mainly frantic last home games to avoid relegation) and the Spurs League Cup game was probably one of the best. But it is time that we started to make the JSCS a home fortress and that must start tomorrow.

Naming stands is all the vogue at present, our near neighbours embarrassed themselves this week, we did not. Our North Stand will, for the next two years, be the Bank of Telecom Stand. Sound solid investment, Southend take careful note.

Eddie the Eagle would say “For Feathers Sake” we must get stuck into the opposition and record some home victories if we are serious about promotion.

You don’t win the league in August, but a slow start does nothing to keep pace with the top clubs.

I don’t think that the squad is bad. We have two decent keepers in Hornby and new boy Kieran O’Hara, the defence looks sound enough and we have an embarrassment of midfield talent. Once again it is the forward line that looks weak.

If we achieve nothing else before the transfer window slams shut let us secure another striker. We owe Michael Folivi a contract and I think that he would offer something new up front with Freddie Sears. Ross Embleton please note. Make it happen.

Now WB has hinted at changes before the Carlisle game.

I would try the following in a 4,4,2 formation

Hornby

Coxe Chambers Eastman Clampin

Hannant Skuse Chilvers Ashley

Sears Akinde

Subs
O’Hara, Dallison, Newby, Judge, Cooper, Tovide, Tchamadeu

Paul Simpson has already chalked up a victory over Crawley and despite what he says on the iFollow site will fancy his chances at Colchester tomorrow.

The final few games last season were really enjoyable. We played some exciting football with two strikers and a good passing game. I really want to see the team achieve promotion this season and our squad with that gentle tweaking looks good enough to finish in the top seven.

It is about time that we banished any thought about relegation and instead set out to secure those 73 points to extend our season. The doom and gloom must end and we must be more attack minded and this mindset starts at home where improved results will see increased crowds. 2,813 home average attendance was simply awful. Yes of course, poor results will not endear a fickle population to venture out on a Saturday afternoon or Tuesday evening. But take a leaf from Stockport County. I downloaded my tickets today for next weekend. We can expect a 10,000 crowd at Edgeley Park and it is interesting to note that it is 12 years since we last played Stockport County. They have secured league status again and are many people’s favourites for back-to-back promotions. Yes they have bought wisely and generously, but we have quality players too and they must start to secure results quickly.

WB wants to play his keepers on an almost rotational basis (that is a mistake in my view) the best keeper plays and is number one. Sam Hornby didn’t let us down in the games that he played last season. I haven’t seen Kieran O’Hara play but he seems solid from reports, however rotating them for league games is not the way forward. By all means change it up for the cups but number one on merit must be the battle cry for the 46 games.

The back four of Coxe, Chambers, Eastman and Clampin until Tom Dallison is fit must be the way forward. Junior Tchamadeu is an able deputy at right back but I sometimes wonder whether he is better as a wing back.

Midfield allows us to play two wingers in Hannant and Ashley. Huws was unlucky to be injured in such a cynical way and will play alongside Chilvers or Skuse. Cooper and Newby also offer options. So, there are plenty of opportunities.

Young Hutchinson has been loaned out so Samson Tovide must be offered minutes this season. But what about the pairing up front. Sears is number one on the striking chart with anyone from Akinde, Nouble or Tovide. The team is crying out for Folivi, get it done.

Tomorrow I expect to see a home win, perhaps 2-0 with Sears and Chilvers with the goals.

Weather will be 23 degrees Celsius and sunny. Ideal football conditions.

First home match of the season let’s hope for a decent crowd (3,500+) and smiling Colchester faces at 4:50pm.

Enjoy the game.

I'm with you again Durham in regards to stopping the negativity!
It doesn't help anyone at this stage of the season.

This is a good reason why it is important to start the season well especially at home.
Last year was a 0-1 defeat against Northampton in one of many of those games where we couldn't score for toffee. Wiredu, Sears and Nouble missing guilt edge chances!

It took 5 league matches before we recorded our first home win vs Harrogate (1-0). A 0-1 defeat to Gillingham and a 1-0 win vs West Ham U21 in the PJT before the Harrogate win.

Our Home Record last year was pretty dismal W6, D9, L8, F25, A28, GD−3.

Normally it is our home record that bails out our abysmal away form, so fingers crossed we can get our home form off to a good start this weekend!

As for the team, I wonder if after an extra week long training Dallison will start? It does seem as though Brown, Dunne & Huzzey prefer a left footer and right footer combo. Poor ol' Eastman might have to sit this one out again!

I reckon:

Hornby

Coxe Chambers Dallison Clampin

Skuse Judge

Newby Chilvers Nouble

Sears

I predicted 2-1 Col U earlier on in the week, but if Brown can let go of the shackles and let the forwards play without fear, we could be on for another thrashing of Carlisle like we have done in the past! Anyone else remember the 3-0 win Dec 2019, 4-1 win Jan 2017 or even the 5-0 win Oct 2008!

I’ll stick with my conservative 2-1 win setting us up nicely to batter the farmers up the road in the cup midweek!

C’mon the boys!

Poll: What was the main reason for the Col U win versus Carlisle?

A frustrating equaliser for the Cumbrians right before half-time, but it sounded like it was coming.

This is such an important game because Stockport will be challenging

If we are to play 2 strikers then it has to be genuine strikers not a midfielder.

Either Big John or Big Frank to make an appearance.
Also I want to see Ashley with his pace.

Could be worse, could be losing 1-0 at home to Boreham Wood :-)

Also, Dobra gets the second for the Spireites at Dorking Wanderers.

Delighted for Seaweed couldn't happen to a nicer team.

Some views fro a Carlisle perspective:

We had the better chances and could/should have scored a couple more. We were the better side in the first half and I think that Colchester shaded the second. The refereeing was what we’ve come to expect in EFL2, erratic. Our first yellow was nailed on, the second was ludicrous; if anything it was a foul our way for holding (from my view on iFollow). But how did your lot get away with no cards from your 13 fouls to our 8? Some of those fouls were agricultural! Anyway, a fair result in the end and no harm done to either Club at this point of the season. All the very best for the the rest of it.

A very fair assessment

I am hoping it was just early season rustiness but I fear it will be a lower half of the league struggle for both teams.

Yep, a very fair assessment of the game that I listened too. Yes, Sears hit the inside of the post, but with better finishing you could have been two or three nil up at that point. We improved once the second half triple substitution was made, but definitely a fair point for both by the final whistle.

Good luck for the remainder, apart from one particular match obviously...

Don’t disagree with much of that Griff. Honours even was about right.

And to Carlisle fan Joe from the Beehive, pleasure to meet you in The Magnet. Good chat whilst blowing the froth off a couple before the game and sorry we couldn’t fit you in our cab. Good luck for the rest of the season.

I’ll post separately about the shambles getting into the game. Very poor!

Only thing that has changed is the stripe. Could not hold on to a lead, should have bought Akinde and Big Frank on the hour mark, for the ineffective Newby and Hammant . Lack of grabbing the game by by scruff and getting a winner . Draw was fair result because of our lack of positivity of getting a winner. Looked like the mediocre mid table fixture with not enough ambition.

That might have been more fun!

Half the turnstiles in the south stand were out of action due to “IT issues” so, rather than do anything sensible like allowing access via other turnstiles barely being used, everyone had to join a very long and slow moving queue to go through the two that were working in the south stand. We joined the queue just about 14.45 and missed kick off.

Numerous people suggested opening the gates but were told that was not possible. Strangely the impossible then happened when the game kicked off, but only for paper ticket holders, which I had. Of course, there was nobody actually checking paper tickets so anyone could have wandered in. Suffice to say plenty of people were a little pi55ed off.

To add insult to injury someone told me that something similar happened at Northampton last week and they just opened the exit gates to get everyone in quickly. I do despair that with a crowd of 3k fans missed kick off when that was entirely avoidable. Easy solutions were suggested but nothing was done before kick off when the club knew full well there was a problem. I don’t think the club would know customer service even if it bit them on the arse.

Rant over.

Not good, one hopes the club does a lessons learned exercise to make sure this doesn't happen again. I assume they can't be blamed for the IT fubar, but they can be blamed for not allowing their stewards to exercise some commonsense - I mean, how many people are actually going to turn up without a ticket on the off-chance they could sneak in without paying?

On the subject of Northampton btw, I remember many years ago at Sixfields remonstrating with a home steward, who insisted a granny (my brother-in-law's Mum) empty her water bottle out because she couldn't drink it there and then, and 'bottles with caps' were not allowed. Seems like lack of subjective objectivity is still with us in the stewarding fraternity.
