Love the Faurlin tweet in there - he’s class and one of us.

You’ve summed up this perfectly and I felt I was tumbling down concrete stairs, shins grazed deeply by plastic seats, along with you all. It’s why I used to love going to away games even when you know we’ll be shit. Why do you it? It’s the rush, the buzz, the moment that lasts forever….. if you know, you know; if you don’t then you never will.

Thanks for these reports, it’s like vicariously attending

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Sensational (informal) report, for a game with a sensational, in all senses of the word, ending.

Wrap it up and put it in the museum with Seny's shirt and the match ball.

Thank you.

A good summary of the match although I always felt we were in with a chance as we did create opportunities.

I also thought that our midfield and front 3 created problems for the defence by being too narrow. Often we played the ball across to our full backs but no-one was wide for a ball down the line which meant the full backs had to go back inside - led to some dicey moments with Niko passing the ball to Sunderland and Ossie turning inside and trying to dribble past his marker.

But what a finish - so glad I was there!!!!

Great report, will go down as one of my favourite away games, I was there for the Mackie Derby one which I still go on about today and to share Saturday with my son was very special.

For 89 minutes I thought we were dire, I was thinking it felt like one of those get to 52 points as quickly as possible seasons. Yet that comeback, the celebrations etc, I’m still on a high 2 days later, I live for moments like that and Clive’s report summed it all up perfectly. Thanks to the very kind QPR fan who in the melee found my phone which had gone flying out of my pocket

We took my brother in law, mainly as he was putting us up for the weekend due to the train strike, he’s a Newcastle fan but one of those who never goes and watches it all on his phone. He didn’t get it at all, said it was just a point so couldn’t get his head around the way we celebrated. Some people will never get it but when you follow this team around the country for every abject waste of times you hold onto hope for a moment like your goalkeeper scoring in the last minute then making an unbelievable save to keep you in it. I don’t think there is a better feeling in life than those few seconds after a goal like that is scored, you just lose yourself in pure delirium and that’s why we keep going back for more.

Just spare a thought for the lads who did Blackburn the week prior and left Stadium of Light on 85th minute to grab some beers to drown their sorrows on the 5.30pm last train back to London...

Great read, but just one thing: Dieng gets an 8?? Got to be an 11, surely?

I might’ve been tempted to leave too if I had a train to catch, but I spoke to one fan back in Newcastle who left on 80 odd minutes and he was staying up there for the night.

Don't understand the narrative that we didn't deserve at least a point.

I thought we had the better chances the Xg backs it up that we deserved a point

Hard to believe Seny was out on loan while Joanna was costing us 10 points a season.
Nice bloke Joe but Christ that clanger on Saturday was horrendous!!
Kudos to the travelling fans again.
Superb as always. My mate Mark ended up in the toon on Saturday night.
He should know better at 55!!

The xG says we were better on Saturday than we were against Middlesbrough which is obviously fcking bolox and shows why that measurement works over long periods of time and large sample sizes but not when you use it to look at individual games.

Understandable, I mean if Newcastle's keeper did that at Sunderland in injury time to snatch a point the away end would probably just politely applaud and remain seated.

I'm not sold on xG either, Clive, but it's another tool to add to other stats and the all-crucial eye-test to help assess how a team is playing.

In this case, I'd guess that the reason it's high is that most of our shots were from inside the box.

There were four chances that were pretty clear cut: Uncs, Dykes, Dickie and Roberts, with possibly Armstrong if he'd managed to pass it across the box; it's a bit of a surprise not to score from any of them. Did we miss as many obvious goal scoring opportunities against Middlesbrough? I would have thought the Willock goal we wouldn't expect to score from that position and the Dunne was a bit of a howler from the goalie. I can see it makes sense in terms of clear chances created. Having said that we seemed to play better against Middlesbrough but they were a better team and closed us down better in the final third.

...great point. Never thought of that.

Boro were a far better team than Sunderland. xG doesn't allow for that.

Yeh it's better over time though. Last season it was exactly right about us, even when we were flying high it said we were playing at a level around 11th 12th which turned out to be bob on. If you look at it on individual match basis less so - and it's not just me saying that, if you go back and listen to the Andy Belk interview we did he says the same thing. It can throw up some perverse stuff on a match by match basis, like saying QPR were better against Sunderland than Middlesbrough for instance, or that we had the lowest xG in the league on the day we won 3-0 at Hull.

Dykes had a shot hit defender on 6 yard line, Albert had a clear chance he dragged wide, Bonne in on goal but for the red card challenge and there were another 2/3 in the first half as well including Chair's chip from the halfway line.

Not at Sunderland but unsurprisingly MB didn't say after the game " Well that was better than Middlesbro."
