Will 50 points mean safety? Prediction competition 09:32 - Mar 3 with 12150 viewsTonto

Convention states that 50 points means safety in the championship. But with 11 games to go and the current form of the bottom half, that may not be enough?

So for sh1ts and giggles (no prizes), how many points is do you think the 3rd from bottom team will have when they get relegated.

I'm going for 52

It wouldn't surprise me if you'll need 52-53 points to stay up this year

We’ve taken 17 points in the last eight games, repeat that over the next eight and it puts us on 55 with three games to spare

Given that's top two form it is probably unlikely.

Perhaps, but not much more unlikely than Wednesday winning four out of their last five and still being second bottom.

True. Would be amazing if we somehow could do it.

If we do end up, staying up (we will) then I'll drink as many pints as points that it took us to maintain our Championship status.

Due to the obvious consequences, Mrs Rave is hoping that we go down, which is actually quite ironic.

Agree that 50-52 is the target. Can’t see SW or Hudds going, former playing too well and latter has a really favourable run in. Surprised how little attention Blackburn and Birmingham are getting in general discourse, personally think those two, stoke and wawll are our main challengers. But things are changing so often who knows - truly a mad league

The margin between the team staying up in 21st and the one relegated in 22nd this year will be goal difference. Both will be on 46 points.

Our last two games are tricky, especially in the context the opponents will be for those, but I think we could be safe by then. Of the next 9, I can see us win 4 and pick up a draw or 2, which might just be enough.

Key will be getting a good haul against Wednesday, Plymouth, Swansea and Birmingham.

Well, probably unlikely but thats been our form over the last eight games. Alternatively we’ve taken 17 points from the last ten games so that would put us on 56 with a game to spare

Over the last 12 seasons, the average points for 21st place is 47 with a spread between 41 and 55 points. At the moment it does look like this season will be on the high side. I think 51 points are needed.

I'm confident we can get to safety but, as others have already said, I want us there before the last two games of the season. Leeds and Coventry will both have something to play for then.

Anyone from 12th down is in danger.

Looking at latest form Watford, Boro, Blackburn, Plymouth could all drop further.

Rotherham have almost certainly gone so that leaves two more spaces.

Any team putting 2 wins together could leap up the table - the form from the last 6 games spells problems for anyone not scoring at least a point a game:

So difficult to predict but one thing is for sure, with so many teams bunched together practically every week sees a 6 pointer. Sooner or later something has to give. I'm going for 51.

I think with so many surely a slightly lower amount maybe enough as so many will play each other therefore many points will be dropped somehow.

Also for me only 2 places as Rotherham are gone for me but can still pick up a few points.

Key as ever don't lose the 6 pointers obvious I know

Would be funny if brum go down with their owners self afflicted stupidity earlier this season

Stoke's next four games look tough, they've got Leeds away, Preston away, Norwich home, Hull away.

If they lose that next four games, then that would put the number of points needed to stay up.

According to Oddschecker you can get 9/2 on Stoke to go down which seems decent value for a team in the drop zone at this stage. 11/2 on Brum looks fairly tasty too.

I got 48 to be enough and got us to 53, i.e. 15 points from last 11 games.
4 points this week and beat Wednesday and Birmingham, among other results

With teams down the bottom end suddenly struggling to pick up points, will it take less points than many (including myself) originally predicted?

Ooo, I'm sticking with my 51 points to be on the safe side. 11 more to get and I believe we can.

51 to stay up is also what I originally went for. Not so sure now but, whatever it turns out to be, it would be nice to get there asap so we're not relying on beating Leeds and Coventry to survive.

I said 48 points could send you down in another thread last week and I'm sticking with that.

Roth, Brum, Plym. to go.

We do have to do what generally we're not great at doing - winning the big 6-pointers against teams around us (Birmingham, Sheff Weds, Plymouth). I have confidence that Marti, Xavi and Paul will get us very well prepared but I'm concerned that two of those are at home and our home form has been poor. I think we're going to have to win a couple of the big away games against Swansea, Hull, Coventry to survive and we shouldn't fear them. 6 weeks ago I said that 48 will be enough - I'm revising that to 50 on goal difference. The bums are squeaking!
