| Let the kids play with freedom (or encourage them to do so) 11:16 - Apr 22 with 5836 views | sevenhoop | Kealey Adamson and Tylon Smith played like the were shit-scared passing the ball forwards. They looked petrified every time they got the ball in case they might not find one of ours with a pass, so immediately it went backwards, apart from two long balls from Tylon in injury time, when the situation was desperate I would be surprised if either of them had positive passing yards in that game. The left hand side of the Swansea team will never ever have an easier game - "that right back isn't ever going to test us with a run or a pass forwards, so just relax and press the player he is going to inevitably pass back to". I'm all for giving the kids a good run out but it is pointless if they do not pay with any freedom whatsoever, especially in games where the result is not the be all and end all. | | | | |

Keep it really safe and simple. Stay deep tight and narrow, don't get yourself too wide and exposed. If you get the ball, quickly pass it backwards to one of the centre backs.

He should be loaned out next season. Adamson did better but I think that he too needs a loan out.

The problem with this (and I agree with you BTW) is if you're a League One manager going into next season at somewhere like Doncaster, Bromley, Barnsley and you're thinking, right, I've got 46 league games here, three cup competitions, multiple three game weeks, challenged budget, long old winter... you're looking for people you're going to be able to rely on to play every week at a reasonable level, to keep you in that league, and to keep you in a job. Are you looking at Kealey Adamson, Esquerdinha, people like that, and thinking he's the man for me? We'll sign him, he'll do 40 games as my full back, and we won't have a problem there. Look at Mansfield's squad and the profile of players Nigel Clough signs there.

Of course they're going to be nervous at the step-up and maybe more focussed on not cocking up as opposed to looking like a Ronnie Edwards. Thought KA did ok, TS will learn from his rash challenge which was never a pen, wasn't even in the same post code as the penalty area. That said wasn't as if those around them were playing so well, that the pair could blend in effortlessly into the mix. If anything, it's further evidence that our pups need to be playing proper mens footy in League 1 or 2, and getting 30 plus games under their belts asap. Oh, could one of them get a haircut so we can distinguish who's the Aussie and who's the Sarfie.

but on multiple times they go the ball, they had time and were not being pressed. on most occasions, they didn't even look forward "there's a hot potato, don't want that, get rid of it". Except, the potato was not hot, and needed dealing with as appropriate for each time that the ball was with them.

I agree with you. I wasn't thinking they'd get L1 loans and probably not L2 either. As with all but a couple of DS loans this season, it would be at National League at best. That's not great I know but (cliche alert) they both need to play in the men's game to see if they've got the gonads to make it at a higher level. After last night I confess I have my doubts.

But how do they get minutes in games if they don’t go out on loan? How do other clubs give them experience? Or should we only use experienced CBs and not bother with trying to develop them ourselves? I agree though it’s proved difficult to get minutes for our Academy players. Even those at National League sides are getting very few matches even though some of them looked decent in the Development Cup final.
| Let the kids play with freedom (or encourage them to do so) on 12:03 - Apr 22 with 4066 views | daveB | One of the big problems we have is for the last 10 years we've talked about Development and players learning in the first team but we're a club in the second tier of English football, this isn't an under 8's game where you learn how to pass, move and defend they should know this by now. The kids in the first team should be at least league one level and ready to improve to become a championship one and then beyond that. We have so many kids who come into the team and can't do the very basics well enough, they are not even National League level playing in the Championship all because we want to say look our average age is low and we bring x amount of players through to the first team. Whether they are good enough or not seems low down on the list of priorities. | | | |

Valid point on what a club might look for as a basic requirement: how many games is the loanee going to play? However, was it ever thus? Surely, and hold on to your hat here, even QPR do that when looking at a loanee.... The important thing for all concerned is that the loaned player plays and at a level that properly tests them and from which they return to us better for the experience. I look at some of our loans and wonder if there's going to be a benefit and maybe QPR's thinking is smart: get them playing against men, show they can handle it and then try getting them into loans higher up the food chain. But one thing is certain: they won't develop solely playing kids footy in the DS set-ups, and the likes of Ezzy, KA, and TS look like the need a bit of beefing up and a sustained period of playing with and against geezers.

Adamson is not a pup. He's 23. Significantly older than Kone, Kolli, Vale, Morgan. A couple of weeks older than Ronnie Edwards. A month older than Liam Morrison. Making his debut. Just not fit for purpose in this league. There will be a National League or Scottish D1 team who may need him. Tylon Smith is young, but Clive is right about him and Esquindinha: they're not physically the right profile for English league clubs. You cannot imagine a L2 team in need of a CB or LB squandering a loan place on them. And they're not going to hold down a place in the first team at QPR. So why are they here? It predates Nourry, but we have long signed young players who would be brilliant 7-a-side players should that competition ever open up professionally. But how are they gonna look at Lincoln away next year in the next injury meltdown?

Sorry but.... what's the actual difference there between that League One Manager and our own position? I know I'm boring but the club recruitment policy is totally wrong. Nourryvirus is on the record as he's going all in on yoof and yoof alone and I think this could be a watershed summer and could prove difficult to circle the U bend for another revolution next season. Maybe he'll have a Damaseas moment and realise the squad needs that blend of experienced dogs of war and young prospects otherwise all the prospects are doing is learning how to be shit or injured consistently.

Adamson is 23! 'kin 'ell,, I actually thought he was a pup we'd signed off Bondi with a clear strategic plan to turn him into the next Kyle Walker. Turns out, he's nearly as old as Kyle. I think we're all agreed that some of these pups need beefing up.

Kolli and Bennie have both taken risks be it long range shots that have gone in, or sitters missed. Morgan was awful last night, but he was trying to make things happen with the ball. There's something to be said for personality on the pitch and I thought Adamson was awful for that. Smith got in a couple of foot races and sort of looked like he may have something. Adamson just gave the ball to the bigger boys, didn't look like he belonged at all. The 'youngsters' don't really look good enough to me. Adamson, Smith, Esq, Bennie. Even Kolli and Morgan only really should be squad filler at the moment. But that's because our recruitment and fitness regime is poor that we have to use them

I can't see Adamson at 23, having the required uptick in development now to suddenly go up 4 divisions in ability. The bigger worry for me is with our association with Central Coast Mariners, we'll be plumbing the A-League for even more players. If we unearth the next Tim Cahill or Mark Viduka great, but we're probably going to end up recruiting the next Nick Ward. [Post edited 22 Apr 13:58]

Harsh. Though he had a very nervous first few minutes, he settled down and rescued us a couple of times with his pace when Swansea were breaking. Undoubtedly reluctant to cross and having another new boy coming in next to him didn’t help either, but I thought he did OK overall - I wasn’t missing Mbengue!

I thought those couple of times he recovered the situation with his pace were down to his poor positioning or initial errors that he had actually made. I don't think Mbengue is the answer either. Perhaps right-backs are harder to find than we think!! I mean when was the last proper good one we had...

That was in the days you had the Football Combination, proper men's football to see whether promising youth players had the cojones to eventually step up to the first team. I might be wrong but I seem to recall fewer loans in those days, you got experience playing men's football in the reserves.

So we're just tossing off games for no benefit (in hindsight I'm more pissed off about the League Cup now than I was at the time, especially as we would have won if we'd made some changes at half time to protect the lead). Get them out on loan and find out if they're good enough for league football.
