The era I started supporting England was mid 70s so I have a great soft spot for players like we had great players like Mick Channon, Trevor Brooking and of course Gerry Francis. How the hell did they not qualify for tournaments back then? Same for “Ron’s twenty two” in 1982. So many good players in that squad, amazing that we not go further in that World Cup????
I went to loads of England matches in the 80s and 90s. Stopped going after Euro 2004 because I found it hard to support the so-called Golden Generation. That era seemed to be full of individuals and egotists, not a team.
I’ve generally avoided picking players who are clearly bellends. So no Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole etc etc etc.
Lineker and Shearer were great servants to England, both often rescuing them with goals when the team were playing poorly. I also have a soft spot for Ian Wright (great player, deserved more caps) and of course Les Ferdinand. But Harry Kane is miles and miles ahead of every other striker during my time watching England and it amazes me that anyone wouldn’t have him in their team. This summer if he’s fit he’ll be the difference between England having a decent World Cup or not. One of very few actual world class number 9s England have ever had!

Sorry digswell, accidently downvoted your original post. I'm amazed at so many nominating Seaman? Serious? Any shot from more than 20 yds and he was like a finless kipper. Best England keeper?.... he's not even in my top 3 Rangers keepers, let alone England.

Depends how you define "performed" - he was great in qualifying when we were sticking six past Andorra or whoever, and rubbish at every major tournament bar his first. He has fewer World Cup goals than John Stones. Wouldn't even make the subs bench for me - Kane, Shearer and Lineker all miles ahead of him.
Also in terms of Seaman - he dropped off horribly and was a complete liability by 2002, but was absolutely immense before then, Euro 96 in particular. Decent argument for having Pickford in ahead of him, but it's definitely between those to for me (though obviously it's Banks going back further)
Some interesting shouts. Mostly attack minded. Only one person had a defensive mid in bryan robson. Good shout that or steve mcmahon. No john barnes from anyone either yet
Henderson was always going to go, hes made that clear from day 1. He seems to like Madueke as well. Not sure on Toney haven't really seen him play since he left Brentford but his goal record is still very good

Unfortunately, Madueke is a blind alley specialist, Henderson is on his last legs and Toney might as well be. We’re in the happy position of having a much bigger talent pool than we’ve been used to so some talented players won’t make the cut, but I can’t help thinking that Foden, Palmer, Gibbs-White and Dewsbury-Hall have higher ceilings and floors than the first three.

I don't disagree but he seens to like Madueke and Henderson so l aways thought they'd go.
Toney is a real surprise, one thing in his favour is being used to playing in that heat.
I found Lewis Hall left out the biggest surprise, I think he's our best left back and to take Dan Burn is err interesting.
