This referee is what you could call "ASSERTIVE"

Giving me flashbacks of my sadistic b'stard of a maths teacher when he got frustrated at my lack of abilities in deciphering what the h*ll logarithms were about.

Pre season at Aldershot one year, Ainsworth's last as a player, he flew in on a Aldershot left back and I heard a massive snap right in front of me.

I was convinced at the time it was the player's leg, but it was just his shinpad thankfully. Was convinced i'd witnessed a mutilation.

Remember Paul Murray’s leg going like that right in front of us at Norwich. Disgusting.

Gavin Maguire's tackle on Danny Thomas at White Hart Lane takes some beating the whole ground went deadly quiet in a state of shock and i think we all knew that it would end Danny's career which it did.

Mark Dennis a complete lunatic on a football pitch.

Yea, Mcguires tackle did also come to mind. Also Busbys broken leg at Fulham. I think I was 10.

Diakite’s debut was something to behold. I think everyone in the ground knew after 5 minutes he wouldn’t last long. Was a fantastic half hour of maiming.

Reminded me of Kill Bill Vol 1’s Showdown at the House of Blue Leaves.

Refereeing on Hanworth Air park, a goalkeeper dived on a broken bottle neck, cut his leg wide open from the ankle to his thigh! He literally had several hundred internal and external stitches.

A young lad playing for our amateur football club had to have a leg amputated after an infection set in following a horrible leg break. We (the club, not me) managed to call in a few favours and got a Former League XI to come down and play an Old Bromley XI at Hayes Lane (see you all there on 31st July!)

Bobby Moore captained the visitors and the team included Alan Mullery and John Hollins. For the record it was a 6-6 draw.

More importantly, over £3,000 was raised for the poor lad’s fund.

This wasnt particularly frightening at the time, but a friend supported Reading and randomly i found myself at the Reading Chelsea game where Petr Cech suffered a fractured skull from a kick to the head from a Reading player. No one was particularly scared as most thought he was time wasting and remember wholeheartedly joining in the singing with the Reading fans of "Let him die, let him die, let him die".

Poor bloke had a fractured skull and always wore a skull cap from that day onwards, when playing.

Not one of my proudest moments, when I look back !!!!

Moving from the gory/sad stuff above, the arrival of the Bolivian army to quell a second and nastier brouhaha between two teams in a cup final.

The police had restored order after the players had first started trading blows. But after hostilities resumed, with subs, coaching staff, and anyone else employed by either side entering the pitch to knock lumps out of each other, it was beyond Los Plod's capabilities. Enter the army: riot shields, guns out etc. You know, the usual!

Frightening because you never know how the fans might react and try getting on your toes sharpish at 3,600 meters above sea level. In case you're wondering, just the one bloke sent off!

A schoolboy making his debut for our amateur football club (yes, them again) collapsed in a heap after nearly being cut in half by the opposition centre half.

Screaming in agony, his predicament was not helped by our own central defender and captain, a grizzled 40-something former semi-professional seeing out what remained of his football career in this end-of-season double-header against a spirited Crouch End Vampires 6th XI.

Yelling at him to ‘get up and run it off’, the young lad attempted so to do but immediately fell back to the ground, writhing in agony.

An ambulance was eventually summoned and the lad was whisked off to the Princess Royal University Hospital where a fractured pelvis was diagnosed.

Meanwhile, I suppose a thread of this nature could not be considered to have run its course without mention of the infamous ‘Battle of Santiago’, the 1962 World Cup bloodbath between Italy and Chile …

Genuinely the scariest likely was the Colombian own goal in world cup 1994
Poor bloke likely knew what was going to happen there and then.

Harald Schumacher’s assault on Patrick Battiston in the semi-final of the 1982 World Cup comes to mind too unfortunately.
