You can drink at rugby matches here in Ireland. The problem is that you are being asked to stand up on a very regular basis to either let people out to the bar, or let them back to their seats while trying to balance four pints in a fragile cardboard container. Often times there is spillage. All of which means it can be a poor experience for fans who just want to watch the match without such distractions.
The Irish rugby union are charging a fortune for international tickets. Too many corporate types are attending and are just there for the beer, and the true fans are getting very frustrated and disillusioned with this type of expensive experience. |  | | |

i cant say i see very often people that are totally sh*tf*ced to use old school terminology at games.
i certainly do see loads of people at cricket t20 and limited over games at the Oval and there was a mini mass brawl due to a few bright sparks taking offence towards each other, last season. Obviously people are there a lot longer time duration but a p*ss*d up sports fan doesnt discriminate completely just based on sport. They will kick off wherever. Never seen any trouble at rugby internationals or sevens tournaments have attended though either.
I think with football, if people can drink as much as possible around the two hours in the ground, the likelihood of some numpty kicking off is raised and also post match drinking for some again increases the likelihood of some violence.
Where i sit five or six blokes get into the ground about 5 minutes late, go to half time refreshments around 40 minutes, come back into the ground on about 50 minutes. Obviously for drinks, but not had any issues with any of them at all.
i cant see a reason to reintroduce this into football grounds. There is still a macho vibe and the slightest scuffle could be avoided, if all and sundry have a lower volume of alcohol inside them.. [Post edited 23 Jun 0:08]

My wife got a ST for Spurs women when we moved to live near the stadium so been to a few WSL games. Class for me, but tbh barely anyone in the crowd is drinking as it's very heavily family attended.
My experience at the rugby and the cricket make me know it just wouldn't work at football at all, it's well annoying constantly letting people past, and adding in the heightened emotions of football, it would just be a disaster at club football here imo |  | | |

Unfair? Probably. But TBH I'm not in a rush to see the rules changed at football, and I say that as someone who drinks his body weight in Peroni just to get through 90 minutes of QPR.
Apart from the fact it's expensive dishwater in a plastic cup, and like the smoking ban if you can't get through 90 minutes without it you really do have issues, I think the cons would far outweigh the pros.
Would I like to sit in the sun at that Fiorentina game and have a nice cold beer watching the football? Yeh. Do I like going to a non-league game and having a beer on the terrace? Of course. But it's not going to be like that very often is it?
My experience at the rugby league, which is a much less segregated/tribal crowd than football and basically an equal split men and women, and you can drink in the seats, is that...
a - people behave like twts with it
b - people are constantly up and down, multiple times a half, going to fetch more of it or pis it out to create some room for some more of it. It would be a pain in the ars in our ground.
c - it gets spilled, all the time. Anything you leave under your seat - coat, programme, bag - regularly comes out soaked through at the end cos some herbert two rows back has knocked two pints of it over and it's dribbling down the stand
d - it gets tossed around, sometimes deliberately, sometimes inadvertently, when a try is scored
e - people throw the bottles/cups at the pitch if a referee fcks up or an opposition player celebrates in front of them. This has been a problem at Loftus Road for a long time even with the ban in place.
And that's in rugby league, which is usually very sedate, and there's often hardly anybody there.
You've then got this ridiculous performative thing where football 'fans' go to BoxPark and throw their £9 lager up in the air for Harry Kane's twice taken penalty ten minutes into the first group game. I've no real desire to come back from Bristol City in the middle of December soaking wet and stinking because some twt at the back thought it was an amazing idea to launch his Strongbow Dark Fruits in the air when Paul Smyth scored.

Agree with all of that Clive. I have been absolutely off my head at the football, fallen asleep at the football, lost track of which end Fulham were attacking, and once thought that a game had ended, when it was only half time... and I think it would be a nightmare for all the reasons listed above.
There are enough rows over people standing-up/not wanting to stand up, without lobbing people getting drenched in beer/cider and having coats, bags, kids soaked into the mix. I must have seen literally hundreds of full pints getting kicked over at the cricket over the years. |  |

Saw first hand last year at an England match at Twickenham, some poor bastard with bag of 4 or 5 souvenir match programmes under his seat, suddenly got a tsunami of dropped beers from a few rows behind cascading down the concrete stand and flooding his bag.
