If you're not fitting a DX or vented system then it's not Air Con simple as.
Cheapest "air conditioning" you'll find is a strong fan behind a block of ice on a deep tray.
Worked for years in NYC before the genius'es got involved and started using inert gases, copper coils and physics.

Am going to wait till the winter and decide what the best option is. The mark up at this moment has got to be brutal.

Aren't window a/c's available? Still commonly used in the US and work great, though tend to be a tad noisy. Added bonus for your sensibilities, invented by a black guy, Fred Jones. |  |

Dunno mate. We don't have sliding windows anyway so couldn't put one in. I haven't noticed any of them though. They'll have to start thinking more about window design next.
Reminds me that I never understood how several dozen people aren't killed every year by falling ACs in New York. Millions of people jamming them in and sliding two flimsy concertined bits of plastic into place to hold a small fridge stable 10 floors up. It's always boggled my mind. | | | |

The amount of energy generated by renewables offsets the emissions people used to have with air conditioning. In 2012, for example, only 0.14 gigawatts of energy was generated by solar in the whole year.
At the time of writing today, Solar has produced 12.85 Gw, equivalent to over 35% of the UK supply. If there is an abundant renewable energy supply, aircon doesn't have the same footprint it did before. |  |

Europe is going mad for the Midea Portasplit, once it's in stock anywhere it is gone in seconds. They retail for around 750 euros usually but are being sold for 3000 euros on Amazon etc.
It seems to be the best non-permanent aircon. The cooling unit sits outside the window so it's quieter than a usual in room aircon.

And so they should, it's a good brand. Not that care as I have a/c but,I pick up one or two units every year(and could have a dozen if I wanted), put 'em in storage, give the odd one away, use them on jobs blah blah blah. [Post edited 10 Jul 21:39]

The drawback of the units that have exhaust pipe running out the window is they all seem to have adaptors for sash windows. Our windows open sideways but I've managed to adapt the adaptor(!).
