With all the excitement surrounding the start of a new season for the R’s, it’s easy to overlook the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup (7th to 9th August). Over 700 teams will be fighting it out for the £1,125 prize money (the losers get £375).
As usual, me and my mate pick a random team to follow until their eventual elimination. We then ‘adopt’ the winning team until their elimination, and so on. It just adds an extra frisson to the tournament.
My ‘team’ this year is Northern League Division One outfit Yarm & Eaglescliffe, who take on first ‘World Cup’ winners West Auckland Town (not a lot of people know that etc).

Worth remembering it's the 100th anniversary of when we forgot to send in our application form and thus, we failed to enter the 1926/7 competition.
