First reaction for Millwall defeat 16:14 - Aug 8 with 20574 views

Obviously the big negative is that we are out which ultimately is all that matters, and we gited them their goal in normal time.

Penalties were a mixture of not great pens from us but in fairness some great saves also from their keeper.

All that said we drew 1-1 with one of the best teams from last year, both playing pretty much full strength sides. We deserved a draw at least, created the most chances, pretty solid defensively and potentially moving the ball forwards quickly much faster.

Performance wise I think it was decent - plenty of moments of frustration, but I feel if we play like that and improve on the errors for last third we will be ok this season.

Hard to be positive after a loss, but I'm not all doom and gloom after that, frustrating as the result is.

I think the positive today is if our players aren't crocked for the first game of the season next week. It does seem we may have got through it unscathed. Although you never know.

Sadly, the four piss weak missed penalties rather sums up the overall problem with the team, the midfield is predominantly physically small and mentally weak.

Aside of that, we’re not that bad a team.

Tough after getting knocked out but we fully deserved at least a draw. I thought for the most part we looked decent. Kemper looked good, and Varane was excellent when he came on. We didn’t go through due to a keeping error. We should have had a blatant penalty….although we wouldn’t have scored it.

Different formation with some coming back from long term injuries (Chair, Burrell, Poku) and so not to down.
Could see a few attacks broke down due to misunderstandings, but that will improve over the next few weeks.
Liked Boy Kemper, looks robust and dealt with Azeez. Vale in CM was a plus though caught a couple if times.
Just looks like we need to move the ball a half second quicker across the team.
Think we'll be in the playoffs.

Can see why Millwall did well with that mean defence, but they were toothless up front. Don't think they'll be troubling the top two this year. Playoffs as well.

All in all annoyed but lots to look forward to.

The penalties were annoying and the goal we conceded is worrying, some scratchy early season play…but at least they looked fitter, with more stamina, than at the same stage of the last two seasons.

Good to see Own Goal get off the mark early as we're going to rely on his goals again this season seeing as we can't even score from 12 yards.

I thought the two teams had a gentleman's agreement not to get out of second gear in that first half. Very dull but no injuries.

Will be interested to see the possession stats - the combination of Charles, Edwards, Jimmy and Madsen is going to to make a difference there if we can keep them all fit /here.

Vale needs to be on the pitch as much as possible imho - he is a classic 'too good for Champ not quite there yet for PL' player. You can also see him using his body and getting in some niggle when he can't - suggests he's working hard to learn that position.

The best thing you could say about the penalties was it gave a lot of people a laugh. Jesus H Christ. It looked like each player was attempting a different version of a successful World Cup penalty they'd been quite partial to, but fcuking it up in true Rangers style. We move on.

Highlights. If you look at the Saito pen thing he's definitely fouled. It's definitely a penalty. But we probably would have missed it. The Charles error is so weird. He completely loses his balance. Penalty saves by both keepers were good, our pens were awful but very few actual pen takers still on at that point. Charles' final pen save is really brilliant.

Ultimately we have to be a lot better at taking our chances this season and hopefully learn a bit from this. Not awful but clearly work to do over the weeks ahead.

I can't agree with pissing about. I thought we were moving the ball around much quicker than last season and we managed eleven shots.
Trying to play an attacking 433. Only one can play in the middle it's either Kone or Burrell. If you put Burrell in the middle what do you do with Kone?

Watched without comms and only half an eye at times, so maybe I missed the worst of it.. but I was mostly encouraged by what I saw.

We showed intent to play forward from the off, dominated most of the game, 38 touches in their box and created enough half-chances. Also tried a few things, Burrell RW clearly didn’t work.

GK error poor and pens were awful, none of those are likely to be our regular takers. Out the cup again, which is frustrating as f*ck sure i too wanted a cup run.

But that was against a team who finished 2pts off automatic promo. If we play like that in the majority of games we’ll be absolutely fine.

Enjoy the ride. The season isn’t over after one cup defeat.

Another early exit from a cup competition, but not outplayed, should have had a penalty for the Saito foul but really those penalties were pathetic.

Millwall looked half-arsed and very pedestrian, so of course we gifted them a comedy goal. We were OK overall but had far too much possession we didn't do enough with and too many players have poor first touches (Burrell and Mbengue mainly). Poku was poor. Smyth, Vale, Chair, Edwards, Dunne had decent-ish games. Looked very much like two mid table teams lacking a cutting edge, but it was hot and the first game of the season.

I have no words for the penalities.

Odd tempo to the game. Enjoyed it none the less, was an entertaining game nice to be back.

Positives
- Chairs fitness
- King Charles and his passing
- Varane looked sharp
- Dunne and Edward’s could be a very promising centre back pairing.
- Alfie Lollyd happy to keep him as backup

Negatives
- Right back, need another fingers crossed for Lamptey.
- Burrell is not a winger, it’s gonna have to be rotated between him and Kobe with Poku starting.
- Millwall won

Encouraging signs feels like we are more prepared this time round.

I liked it.

Apart from the howler from Charles, and the god awful penalties, I thought we looked pretty decent - moved the ball well and a lot faster than I've seen us in a while. Looked to turn and go forward as much as possible.

I was encouraged by the overall performance, if we play like that in the league, I think it'll be a decent season.

Just back, watched the game from the Paddocks for a change of scenery as Ellerslie closed.

I thought we were much the better team and controlled the game and should have scored just before they did. However the front four / five were very poor in the final third. Concerns for me were Burrell seem to lack pace compared to last year and Kone struggled against their defence. At times we were guilty of trying to walk it in rather than taking a few more shots or getting the cross in. Defensively wise we were pretty good (Millwall were better) bar Mbengues sloppy no look pass which led to their goal. Charles guilty of a bit over confidence with their goal should have pushed it over the bar rather than try to catch it.

Alfie brought some chaos and was far more effective upfront when he came on and we should have scored earlier

Thought it was a blatent dive by Saito at the time and it was right in front of me, having watched the replays can see there is contact but the contact did not fell him and he has thrown himself to the ground. VAR gives it I suppose, though of course we would have missed it

Penaltys well you have to laugh, have the rules changed and the keeper is now allowed to take a step forward before the penalty is struck? Bring back the stutter run up I say.

This is a really good and balanced summary of events. Unfortunate but not something ro lose our sh1t over. Lots of positives, serious workout for a full.strength team. We need to be sharper in front of goal but hopefully that will come with more games

I decided to treat myself and the Mrs to hospitality for the first time (cup game was cheaper than a league match) and Obikwu was sat there with Kolli, Larkeche, Morrison and Lamptey. Also saw Kevin Gallen and Richard Langley.
