Don't think that there are many people in this world that would walk away from the money. He thinks that he just has to tough it out for a while longer and he'll get the settlement that he wants.
The club don't have to bend over backwards and pay him straight away. I read the other day that Roy Keane is considering legal action against Sunderland, it appears that they still owe him money from when he was sacked 3 years ago.

Bring in his replacement (someone cheaper, younger, and "up and coming" preferably) and let him rot coaching the QPR pub team or something. After Man City TF and MH got Barton to agree to an alteration in his contract along the lines of one more disciplinary transgression and his contract could be cancelled. Barton could have stuck to his contract and said 'lump it, or I'll just sit out the next three years', but he didn't. And having made that huge concession, Hughes still shipped him out of the cub anyway.
Put in the same position, MH says he's going nowhere, no triggers, nothing. I didn't says Hughes was dumb, he just gutless enough to not do what he expects other people to do.
