Our midfield 10:18 - Aug 17 with 1946 viewssdm1508

It has been said in a few places that maybe Scowen isn't exactly what Mclaren is looking for in the role he wants to play. Collection the ball from the back four and starting attacks. He does seem to be maybe a bit limited in this capacity. I was wondering what people thought of having Mass play that role instead. He wins his fair share of tackles and covers the ground well and can pick a pass and get forward when he needs too. Then you could have Freeman playing as the other central midfielder. I thought when he played that position against Sheff Utd, coming deeper than the 10 role he looked effective. Again he covers the ground and can hold players. He can burst forward from deeper role and pick an attacking pass. This would allow Eze to play the 10 role and stay more central and get a bit more direct pace out wide. Or is the general thought that we need a bit of smasher in midfield with the ability to start attacks (maybe Hall if he ever comes back)

Think you can safely say Luongo is not the man for that role.

It's one thing making a pass, something entirely different making the pass then moving into space to receive a return. He's probably the most pedestrian midfielder on the books.

I thought Scowen did the role well the other night, both him and Luongo are capable of doing that role but and wouldn't be shocked to see another midfielder added this window

I think without a doubt Hall is earmarked for that job if ever fit. To be fair to Holloway, he intended Hall to be the ball carrying DM when going forward and the 3rd CB when defending. It is quite possible we would never even have signed Scowen if Hall had remained fit

You are basing this thread on assumptions by fans. No one knows what's in Steves head.

I really don't know which Luongo you watch, because the one that I see passes and moves constantly. He is always creating angles and drifting into space. The triangles and quick passing between him, Eze and Freeman are one of our biggest strengths this season and one of the biggest benefits of having all 3 of them in the team.

As for the OP, on the basis of what I have seen in the first few games, including Tuesday, I would have Scowen as one of the first names on the team sheet. He's been immense and although maybe not ideal for starting attacks, he's the Championship Kante when we don't have the ball. I agree Luongo may be able to fulfill that role to a degree and improve the attack part, but a midfield with Mass/Freeman/Eze would be hugely exposed without the ball...

It's amazing that Luongo has got as far as he has in a sport he's apparently completely unable to play.

McClaren wants Hall in there next to Scowen, but he's got to be able to walk first. Thorne is like Hall as a player, and also can't keep out of the hospital.

Seen enough to know that neither scowen nor Loungo can perform the deep lying playmaker role to the level required. Neither have shown they can or want to dictate a game from deep. It requires huge confidence, a great first touch under pressure, and a natural ability to pass and move. Neither of them come close to an Ale Faurlin type which is exactly what they need to get close to in terms of core attributes.

Nearest candidate is Manning imho and think he is close to rivaling scowen for the number 6 position, as a potential overall upgrade. He had a great pre-season there where McLaren already identified 6 as his most natural and primary role. Also likely why he has been sent out to hone his skills in this position rather than bit part here and there in our first team as left back, number 8, number 10, or even a wing forward.

Another candidate is Sean Goss who has the passing style but not the bulk and dirty side which is a big big problem of course. Get him in the gym and put some fireworks in him!

As for Grant Hall being an option - he’s good on the ball in defence but much weaker in centre mid - a much more demanding, pressurised and higher tempo position. He may add defensive prowess in there but won’t be any improvement on scowen or Loungo on the ball.

It always amazes me the range of different ways people see the same situation. No-one is right or wrong, but Scowen isn't even the best at that role, to me he is the best midfielder we have.

Always shows for the ball, committed, excellent positional sense, far from slow and does the simple thing without over-complicating it. He was brilliant on Tuesday and (just my opinion of course) should be the first name on the team sheet each week...

Can we go out yet?
