Brilliant writing and a deserved tribute to one of our sometimes-overlooked heroes.

Well done Simon.

the greatest manager we have ever had a man a head of his time , a disciple from dave sexton
we were doing the offside hands in the air before the Arsenal, that was our forte
they were great times , with a great kit, sponsor, players, chairmen, ground, fans ,
everywhere you went in London had QPR graffiti on a wall
I honestly think if Tel would have stayed we could have won the league or finished in the top 3 behind Liverpool & Everton in either 85,86,87, or 88 and if we hadn't of had a European ban we could have done an Ipswich
its a mystery to me how we don't talk about El Tel or that many don't consider him a legend on here

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

Great article and 100% agree if he stayed we would have been top 3 the following season

In my lifetime there have only been 5 or 6 good managers
I would rate Venables above any of them

You can't imagine we'd be struggling near the bottom of the Championship if he was our manager.

We were in reasonable trouble when he took over
He brought a load of the Palace players with him and turned us around straight away
We played with flair and panache and I loved going to watch the team home and away to play. It was exciting.

Terry Venables also was our manager when England last had a decent team to watch - I remember we smashed the Dutch 4-1 playing wonderful football in 1996 Euro Championships

Finally I remember in the 90's going to a private members club that Venables owned in Kensington called Scribes West
My friend and I were allowed in and the only people in there apart from the staff were
Terry Venables, George Best, Pat Van Den Hauwe and some other bloke
Terry came up and said don't I know you boys from somewhere
We had a bit of banter, couple of beers and headed off

For me Terry Venables is a legend

it does make a mockery of people saying 'changing the manager makes no difference'.

look at our plummet from losing sexton and replacing with burtenshaw/sibley, then our rise again under venables, then mullery etc.

good managers do make a huge difference.

Jeez, Esox, grow up and stay away from the down arrow, will you?

Nov77 didn't even mention Holloway let alone criticise him. Or do you believe that it is actually impossible that anyone could be an improvement after The Great Leader?

The words "Mullery" and "good manager" don't belong in the same paragraph.

Changing the manager makes no difference if
a) the people picking the manager aren't very good
b) the manager isn't the main cause of the problems
c) the state of the club is such that you can't attract a much better manager than the one you've already got.

Which has been the case here for a generation, hence we change the manager all the time and never get any better - apart from a brief glorious period when a) was Bhatia and Saksena, b) was Dowie/Magilton/Sousa/Hart/Harford and the main problem (Flavio) had taken a back seat and c) was Warnock. If Guardiola came here it would make a huge difference, but it's not going to happen is it?

Burtenshaw to Venables to Mullery is about as extreme a change in two directions as you can get really. Like Atkinson to Ferguson to Moyes. Obviously it's going to make a difference in that scenario.

this was my era, the 80s and terry at the helm...great days, great team, we were an excellent team, home and away...gates of 20,000+ regularly, the plastic pitch may have been ( to some) an advantage but teams who passed it well and battled usually did on too....a promotion, an fa cup final and replay and all that went with it, a uefa cup run and all seemed fab....i think jim gregory offered to sell the club to tel for a £1m but then barca sodding came in and history changes.
el tel was a great coach with alan harris, george graham had the youth team doing excellent too...all seemed so hopeful.
after success at barca, spurs he took england to a euro semi and the pain of pens....for me a real football genius, maybe tainted by bad off the pitch business deals, still a qpr legend and a special one to me.

Not quite correct about the regular 20,000 plus attendances themodfather.

It didn't look right to me & so having checked with A Complete History, we only achieved that figure 9 times in three seasons:-

1981/82 - Chelsea, Watford & Palace (FA Cup 6th round)

1982/83 - Chelsea & Fulham (title clinching game)

1983/84 - Arsenal, Liverpool, West Ham & Tottenham

Interestingly (for me at least) both times the gate against Chelsea was higher at the Bush that at the Bridge. Also home to Manure was below the £20k mark & Liverpool were higher than the three London clubs.

That doesn't alter that it was a great side though!

Great piece about an undervalued and under appreciated legend. Simply put, Terry was always five years ahead of the pack. It’s a shame so much emphasis is placed on the ‘plastic’ and not enough on the fact that we reciters sides a second one on their home turf!

Wonderful trip down memory lane, albeit that flags up a few reminders of how close we’ve been to doing something really big.

The comparatively low attendance for the Man U home game in 83/84 was probably due to it being a live televised game (Friday evening on BBC if I recall correctly) with live TV games still being a relative novelty back then (introduced only that season I think).

Weirdly wasn't there another Man Utd home game about four years later when Andy Gray scored two belters that nobody was there for because of a massive tube strike?

Yes it was a tube strike. I think that may have been the last time we beat them at LR as well.
