Another plus point to getting youngsters that can sign pro terms, anybody with the ability to become a top level player will be hoovered up for peanuts.

When Man Utd signed a 17-year-old John Obi Mikel from a Norwegian club after playing 6 games for them they agreed to pay £4m, when that murky transfer got resolved & he signed for chelsea a few weeks/months later they paid £12m to Utd. That was over 10 years ago.

Similar type of player with similar potential and Exeter only get a couple of million at best despite market inflation since then. Why? I can see why Exeter are disappointed & why clubs are closing their academies.

Poll: Who’s better?

it's very easy to sit back and go Chelsea scum, utd scum, Liverpool scum etc. when they do this. But it's up to the parents to point out that they are so young. They're already playing first team football at a level most kids could only dream of. Nothing too shabby playing third or fourth tier football or even conference level at that age. Convince your kid to get a season or two of pro football under the belt. Point out who the superstar of the premiership is at the moment - Harry Kane. A guy who did the lower leagues for years and cut his cloth there. Not some two bob kid rotting away in an academy.

I disagree it’s up to the parents; although they might be better off letting him go to a championship club first to build experience rather than rotting in an academy, it’s difficult for parents turn down the money they’re probably being offered. Chelsea and other big clubs have a money making strategy to hoover up all talented youngsters, irrespective of whether they will make the first team and selling them, or sending them out on loan for profit. It’s become so unbalanced because of the numbers involved that championship clubs can no longer balance their books by selling on young talent. The football authorities are too weak to act but they really should be limiting the number of young players big clubs can send out on loan to avoid this kind of thing happening.

At the date of the article he had played 7 games for Chelsea so it is hard to argue that it was not the correct decision for the player.
This indicates that he is more than just potential and as he has played so many games so soon after joining that must have been minimal development by Chelsea and at £2.5m was massively undervalued.

Tough for a parent to turn down the money. It's not necessarily greed, more a recognition that if football doesn't work out as a career for their son, then at least he'll have the money to pay for an education in something else while still in his early twenties.

Kane has been at Spurs since he was 10.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?
