Starting XI 15:24 - Jul 16 with 2072 viewsGloucs_R

What's your starting 11 as it stands?

Ingram
Furlong / Leistner / Lynch / Bidwell
Scowen / Mass
Wszołek / Eze / Freeman
Smith

Subs -Baptiste, Manning, BOS, Smyth, Nico, Sylla, Lumley

Left out - Wheeler, Cousins, Kakay, Washington

Injuries at the back would cripple us this season.

Reckon 4-2-3-1 is probably our best option, not least we generally have some form of cover for most positions

-----------Smith (?)-------------
Freeman (BOS)------Eze (freeman)----Smyth (Pavel/Wheeler)
----Scowen (Manning)--Luongo (Hall)------
Bids (Lynch)---Hall (Lynch/?)--Leinster(Baptiste)-Furs (Kakay)
---------Lumley (Ingram)-------------

goodbye - Cousins & Washington

It's finding the Metrovic for this team that worries me most, and the centre backs still an issue with injuries. Sort those 2 positions out and it might be a bit more rosy than we expect.

injuries at the back were bad last season and we coped but that squad does look weak especially at the back and up front. If the season were to start tomorrow i'd be worried for us but hopefully they can get some players in before the window shuts in 3 weeks.

Lumley
Furlong, Fox, Bidwell
Wszołek, Oteh, Manning, Chair
Eze
Sylla, Smyth
Subs: Ingram, Scowen, Leistner, Hamalainen, Wheeler, Osayi-Samuel, Freeman
I wish I could have found a way to shoehorn Chay Tilt in there too :-)

The grass is always greener.

Mitrovic had absolutely no business being in the championship, that's a pretty high bar! If we can get someone like that though sign me up!

Ingram
Furlong Leistner Bidwell Manning
Scowen Luongo
Eze Freeman Smythe
Sylla

Definitely would like to see a fully fit Grant Hall otherwise we will be very short at the back.

If we had one complaint about Ollie, it was his constant chopping and changing; frequently when he didn't have to.

Aside of the long-standing concerns about weaknesses at CB and having someone better at converting chances made, I'm wondering if a consistent side might not be a strength in itself.

Depends on how we start of course and finding that consistent XI, but I'd feel a little more confident if we at least started out with our formation and style of play well drilled into the squad and a starting XI allowed to get on with it, as opposed to the Friday haphazard guessing game of, 'WTF will he pick tomorrow?'.

Wszolek - - Eze - - BOS

However, that is relying on Hall being somewhere near fit. I would be investing in a bulk order of Imodium if we have to have Lynch in a back four. I also left out Freeman from the XI as I don't think he's a wide player and I like Eze in the middle. Straight swap depending the situation.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

I think Schteve is a 4231 man, and as suggested above, arguably that fits the squad as it presently stands, albeit we need reinforcements.

In 2010 we brought in a manager who was an unpopular choice with many...he decided to go 4231, again unpopular initially with many...and many of his initial signings underwhelmed. And we all know what happened....

I stress I am NOT expecting a repeat - but picking a formation & sticking to (and coaching) it, round pegs in round holes, a generally recognised starting XI, and squad members who could easily cover injuries / suspensions with a like for like switch...do all that and I can see us making slow but steady progress.

Overall: I don't think we're very good comparatively, so we need to find a formula that's solid and picks up points. We're not good enough to expect dominance by possession. We're not fast enough nor strong enough at the back to work simply as a counter-attacking team. So we need something else. This isn't my dream way of playing but it's a way of being solid with this squad, I think.

Questions:
1. How do we start play from goal kicks?
2. How do we get the ball up the pitch otherwise?
3. How do we expect to score? On the break, set pieces, triangles through a back line, balls into the box?
4. How do we plan to defend?

Thoughts:
1. Plan A is short to fullbacks working triangles up the flanks. Plan B is long to striker with Eze Freeman Luongo forming a cordon around him to pick up the pieces and Smyth going beyond. We've lost good distribution with Smithies, so I don't think we can try anything more than this.
2. Plan A is Smyth in the channel to gain territory and win freekicks while leaving the rest of the team in good shape to defend a turnover, and plan B is to work quite directly passing forward to feet through the thirds, seeking an overload in the middle as Eze drifts inside and Sylla comes to the ball.
3. Plan A is set pieces with Freeman's delivery using centre backs as decoys and Furlong to win the headers, and Sylla to poach. Plan B is crosses from deep as the ball is played back to the fullbacks (free because we've overloaded the middle), with Luongo, Sylla and the far side wideman getting into the box, and the nearside wide man and Freeman patrolling the edge of the area for knock downs or passes inside for a shot, or for fouling if there's a break.
4. Get back into a 451. Eze and Smyth supporting fullbacks, Sylla on oppo's deep lying midfielder, let them have the ball until half way. I don't think we can press high with this team without seriously exposing the slow defence, but once in shape the tenacious midfield three can nick it and release quickly to Smyth (see 2 above).

So what does that all mean?

-------------------Sylla
----Eze --------------------------Smyth
------------Freeman Luongo
------------------Scowan
Bidwell NewSigning Leistner Furlong
-----------------Ingram

Bench: Lumley Baptiste Lynch Manning BOS Smith Washington / Wheeler

Why Sylla over Smith? Smith gets tired. From the start teams tend to work Smith out quite quickly. Smith is most effective if the other team are defending and we get possession around the box. Games tend to open up in the later stages, making it easier for us to get the ball into positions to service smith, and making it less important that he contributes to shape. If they're ahead they get deeper and Smith will give us more space. Sylla has the goalscoring knack in the tighter period of the game and is a little more mobile and a little better at bringing the ball down and bringing others into play. Smith is better able to make an impact off the bench.
Freeman gives us set piece delivery, and tenacity in the middle, so he must play. Hopefully he can be encouraged to release the ball a bit quicker when appropriate.

We're going to struggle for goals with the current team, and we will concede plenty against fast attacks. All in all, the first 11 should be enough to keep us up though.

Bit tactically nuanced for me, that. Just tell them to "fcking run about a bit"

I would agree with the original post bar having a fit Hall in for Lynch.

Smells like a trout farm in here
