I think it's hard to compare greats from different eras. The game is much quicker now, with heavy pitches in the early 70 s and the back pass rule. They were definitely harder in them days though, and despite the pitches the magical players like Stan still stood out

Joe Corrigan was unfortunate that he played in an era when top class English goalkeepers were common and he was competing with Shilton, Clemence and our own Phil Parkes for international honours. Malcolm Allison said that Colin Bell, who was genuinely world class and today would be worth £100m, was the best player he ever worked with.
The England team's fortunes in the late 70s could have been very different had Colin Bell not suffered an ultimately career ending injury at roughly the same time Gerry suffered the injury that ended his international career.
